Neighbourhood
Astoria is the greatest. I moved here in 1998, when I first moved to NYC, because it embodied everything I love about the city: huge immigrant population (Greek, Bangladeshi, Brazilian, Balkan, Egyptian, Moroccan, and more), not pretentious, great restaurants, great grocery stores, everything open late. (We have two produce stores around the corner that are open 24 hours.) We have some cool museums too: Museum of the Moving Image (great Jim Henson collection) and Isamu Noguchi Museum, and a big park for leisure about a mile away, and a small sculpture park.
Nearest airport
LaGuardia airport is very close by -- about 15 minutes on the M60 bus, or 10 minutes in a taxi. You can walk in an hour.
JFK is farther -- allow about 1.5 hours on public transit, or 30 minutes (or more, depending on traffic) in a taxi.
Getting around
Everything in the neighborhood is walkable, and see above re: nearby subway stops.

If I'm in town, I'm happy to meet for coffee here in Astoria, or otherwise help you get oriented in NYC. Outer-borough life is the best life!
