Our 3 bedroom home is two levels, with primary living space on the main and a full basement downstairs. Roughly 3,000 square feet, the house has an easy-going, beachy feel - just right for central Vancouver Island. Departure Bay beach is just five minutes down the hill; you can see the lights of Vancouver across the water from our back deck.
The Space
Our 1967, custom-built home has a partially-covered, lovely back deck just off the dining room, that serves as an outdoor dining and living space in summer. There's lots of room and everything you need for a worry-free stay.
There's a large, bright kitchen, recently renovated and updated; separate dining room; gas fireplace in the living room; 3 bedrooms (one currently used as an office) and two-and-a-half baths, including an en-suite powder room off the primary bedroom.
The climate here on Vancouver Island is mild and moderate, but with climate change, our summers can be hot and we can get snow in the winter - we have a heat pump in both the living room and primary bedroom to keep the temperature moderate throughout the house, no matter what the weather's doing.
There's a big family room downstairs, and a dedicated exercise/yoga space; as well as a fully renovated laundry area, separate craft room and a handyman's workshop - all located in the lower level.
The house has a big back yard with a covered carport and charger for an electric car.
There are two small sheds in the backyard.
The front yard is level and easy-care, with a cedar hedge along one side and a big maple tree in the centre.
Guest Access
Two floors - the main floor and lower floor. There are three stairs at the front door to access the main level; and one flight of stairs inside the house leading to the basement. There is also an exterior set of stairs off the back deck to the back yard.
The back yard is partially fenced.

Neighbourhood
Our neighbourhood is mixed residential; primarily owner-occupied single-family homes.
We are close to grocery stores, other retail outlets and service stations; and a five minute drive to the beach at Departure Bay.
We're also a quick 10 minute drive to the Departure Bay ferry terminal, or a half-hour drive to the Duke Point ferry terminal if you want to explore off-Island. Harbour Air floatplanes can also get you to Vancouver very quickly; and there's a very convenient walk-on (no cars) ferry service (Hullo Ferries) that takes passengers from downtown Nanaimo right to downtown Vancouver in just over an hour.
Staying on Vancouver Island - Nanaimo is centrally-located, with tons to explore! If you like the outdoors, Nanaimo is blessed with fantastic parks and trails for mountain biking; hiking; bird-watching; photography; and just enjoying nature.
Victoria is only 90 minutes to the south; Courtenay-Comox is roughly 90 minutes to the north; and the resort area of Tofino is about a 3 hour(very scenic) drive.
Getting to my home
By Air:
Nanaimo Airport is located about half an hour out of town; generally international flights come in to Vancouver, with short connecting flights to Nanaimo.
Harbour Air float planes and the helicopter service Helijet also serve Nanaimo harbour.
By car:
Nanaimo has two BC ferry terminals with connections two and from the Lower Mainland (greater Vancouver) -- Duke Point and Departure Bay.
Often visitors will arrive on Vancouver Island in Victoria and drive up to Nanaimo (roughly 2 hours).
There's also the walk-on Hullo Ferry which takes passengers from downtown Vancouver to Nanaimo.
Nearest airport
Nanaimo Airport (domestic connecting flights) is roughly 30 minutes out of town.
Victoria International Airport is roughly a two-and-a-half hour drive.
The trip from Vancouver International Airport (via car ferry) is about 3.5 hours; however travellers can also connect to Vancouver International from Nanaimo by walking on the Hullo Ferry and connecting to the airport via Skytrain.
Getting Around
Our home is within walking distance of a supermarket; drug store; liquor store; chain restaurants etc - and a quick (10 minutes or less) drive from a wide variety of retail options.
We are centrally located, with downtown Nanaimo roughly 15 minutes away and the North Nanaimo business district about 15 minutes the other direction.
There is a public transit system (buses), as well as rental bikes and scooters available, along with car-share services (Modo, EVO etc) and ride-share options like Uber, as well as cab companies.

Hi there - we're a recently retired couple who love to travel! My husband and I live in Nanaimo on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. We've been involved in house- and pet-sitting for a long time (20+ years) but now that we're pet-free, we're looking to get out and explore. We love where we live, and hope you'll love it, too.
