Wanaka is a resort town, one hour from Queenstown airport. It's known as the "quieter" version of Queenstown, but still has plenty to offer- skiing, mountain biking, hiking, boating, vineyards, galleries, cafes and delicious gelato!
Our house is just a few minutes walk to the lakefront, shops, cafes and park. If you love the outdoors or just want to explore the region, it's a great base.

Neighbourhood
Wanaka is the "quieter" neighbour of Queenstown. However, there is plenty to do if you enjoy the outdoors, vineyards and nature.
It is a paradise for hiking, mountain biking, kayaing, skiing (downhill and cross country), rock climbing, canyoning and paragliding.
There are also great vineyards, historic (gold-mining) sites and art galleries nearby.
The town hosts many festivals including the Festival of Colour (arts), the Mountain Film Festival, Warbirds Over Wanaka and several sporting events.
Getting to my home
Most people fly into Queenstown from overseas or from another city in NZ, Sounds Air also offers direct flights from Christchurch to Wanaka.
There are plenty of car rental companies in Queenstown, which is about an hour's drive from Wanaka. You will definitely need a car to explore the region (exchanges may include a car swap).
Nearest airport
Queenstown (60 mins drive), or Wanaka (10 minutes). There are shuttle buses from Queenstown to Wanaka a few times a day.
Getting around
You can walk to shops, cafes, restaurants and the lake (5 mins). To get further afield, I would highly recommend a car.

Jacky
We (Jacky and Mike) are an active semi-retired couple who love the outdoors. Surrounded by nature, the mountains, ocean and rivers are our playground. At home, we spend our days mountain biking, hiking, cross country skiing and practicing yoga. When we're too tired for any of that, we enjoy reading, volunteering in the community, and going to the movies. All of this is even better when we have the company of our friends and 2 amazing (adult) children.
