Our late Victorian/Edwardian home was built in 1901 as a "gentleman's residence". The rooms are spacious, with high ceilings, marble fireplaces and many original features. Our decorative style is an eclectic mix of vintage and modern country, with lots of personal touches and artwork on display. People tell us it is a very warm and welcoming environment and we certainly love the comfort and privacy of living here in this unique period home.
The space
The kitchen is a good size with plenty of storage and a farmhouse table; there is also a large dining table in the conservatory. We have a separate utility room with large fridge/freezer, washing machine, sink and storage.
There are two living rooms. One adjoins the kitchen, which we use as a family room, with comfy armchairs & lots of lamps - a great space for enjoying a morning coffee, reading quietly or playing family games. We tend to use the other sitting room as a cosy TV lounge in the evenings, but it's good for chilling out at any time of day or night.
The front door opens onto a tiled hallway with plenty of room for coats and shoes. We also have a downstairs WC and a study.
Upstairs there are three double bedrooms, one with walk-in closet, and a family bathroom with roll-top bath and separate spacious shower cubicle.
We have a large established private garden to the rear of the house with barbecue facilities, patio & fishpond - just right for enjoying long summer evenings. The garden wraps around the side of the house, with another gravelled patio area & rockery to the front that is screened off from the lane by a wall and gates, adding to the privacy. We have off-street parking on two driveways and a large garage/workshop.

Neighbourhood
Our house is situated on a quiet lane in a charming, quintessentially English village with many thatched cottages, a quaint parish church and plenty of countryside walks on the doorstep. There are 2 pubs that serve excellent home-cooked food just moments away. The lovely historic market town of Oakham is 5 minutes away, with all the amenities that you could require including several supermarkets and many pubs, restaurants & tea rooms. Oakham has a midweek & Saturday market for fresh produce and a regular farmers' market, plus there are various local farm shops specialising in artisan food & drink close by. The county of Rutland is famous for being the smallest in the UK and is home to to the UK's largest man-made lake, Rutland Water. This is a popular area for bird-watchers, boaters, walkers and cyclists. The county is perfect for exploring by foot or bicycle, with many charming thatched villages, traditional pubs and lots of quiet country lanes. We have five bicycles that guests are welcome to use, two of which are electric - perfect for the hillier rides around Rutland and beyond.
We love living here because of the many local attractions, Rutland Water being chief among them for picnicking and bike rides. For keen historians, we are close to several famous stately homes (e.g. Belvoir Castle, Belton House and Burghley House) and towns such as Stamford & Uppingham with their splendid Georgian architecture, all of which have been used as locations for filming many a historic drama and are fascinating places to visit. Being situated right in the heart of England we are perfectly placed for trips to areas of natural beauty such as the Peak District, Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales - all within two hours' drive. Cities as diverse as London, Birmingham, York, Bath and Warwick are equally accessible, by road or rail, as is a day-trip to the coast.
Getting to my home
Being right in the centre of England, most main UK airports are within driving distance. There are trains to Oakham which is 1 mile from the house. Buses are infrequent....
Nearest airport
East Midlands Airport (30 miles)
London Heathrow Airport (100 miles)
Getting around
It is certainly useful to have the use of a car to get the best of the area - we have one (automatic) car that will be available.

I'm a teacher at a local independent school and my wife, Mel, works there too. She also makes and sells mosaics. We have a teenage daughter, Leonie. We love the outdoors, particularly cycling and walking.
