Neighbourhood
Sunset Park is incredibly family friendly and walkable neighborhood with loads of cafes, restaurants, bars, supermarkets, shopping, playgrounds, libraries, nail salons....everything.
Sunset Park speaks for itself. Beautiful open lawns with playground, splashpad and city pool in summer. It has such a community feel. Every morning the park is full of folks practicing Tai Chi and doing aerobics. On the weekends you can see quinceañeras and soccer matches galore.
There is a farmer's market on the 7th Avenue end of Sunset Park every Saturday morning (10 minutes walk from us).
It's 30 mins on the express train to Bryant Park/Rockefeller, and much closer to the LES, FiDI and Downtown. 20 mins to DUMBO/Brooklyn Bridge Park (great restaurants, bars, and a place to start/end your Brooklyn Bridge walk). Park Slope/Cobble Hill/Boerum Hill are 10 mins away.
NYC is about so much more than just the city itself! Take the MTA train upstate from Grand Central and visit Cold Spring, Bear Mountain and the Hudson Valley. I highly recommend a StormKing Arts Center and the DIA Beacon if you can swing them. StormKing is especially magical. Alternatively, take the LIRR from Atlantic Terminal (1 stop on the express train from us) and be at Long Beach, LI in only 10 stops. Or venture further down to the Hamptons.
You can get the A train to Far Rockaway beach, or take the ferry there from Sunset Park. Or, get the ferry to Governors Island for a great day trip - bikes are the best mode of transport on the island. Access to New Jersey and Connecticut is super easy as well.
In summer, take the Sea Streak ferry from Manhattan to Sandy Hook, NJ or to Nantucket/Martha's Vineyard for the weekend. The possibilities are endless!
Nearest airport
JFK and LGA airports are the closest to our apartment but Newark is also an option.
Getting around
The closest subway station is an express D, N and local R train 36th St stop. From 36th St it is only 2 stops to Manhattan. The stop in Brooklyn it Atlantic Terminal which is a transport hub and you can change to the B, Q, 4, 5, 2, 3 and Long Island Rail Road. Also local buses down 5th and 7th avenues.
Lots of citybike (rental bike) stations in the neighborhood.
If we do a simultaneous swap that involves flying we are happy to swap our car as well - which makes trips upstate a lot easier. We live very close to the BQE (thoroughfare through Brooklyn), which makes getting in and out of the city through Staten Island very convenient.
