Christchurch is the perfect base for exploring the South Island! With this carefree home, enjoy your vacation!
The beach is 20 minutes east, the hills for short hikes or mountain biking are 20 minutes south. In 1h30 you are in the Alps and can ski in winter, or hike in summer. Kaikoura is 2.5 hours north for whale watching.
We are looking for a two or three month exchange in Canada, from February to April 2024, preferably close to a ski resort and a primary school.
The space
The house that we offer for exchange is on one level.
Entering through the main door, you will discover the fully equipped kitchen. We have everything you need to cook, including a waffle maker, a rice cooker and an Espresso coffee machine. Then comes the living room, opening onto the veranda, it is the ideal place to relax after a day discovering the region.
The largest bedroom, facing north (therefore the warmest) is a children's bedroom / playroom. There you will find a bunk bed. The other two bedrooms face south, one with a queen size bed, the other with a single bed. We also have a double inflatable mattress.
The bathroom has just been renovated and offers a bath and a shower.
We usually enter the house through the garage. This is where we store our coats, bikes and shoes.
Outside you can enjoy the courtyard and the herb garden. If you want to relax at home, there are plenty of toys and board games available. Most of the books are in French. We also have a limited collection of English books.
Notes
We are non-smokers and do not want there to be smoke in the house or cigarette butts outside.

Neighbourhood
In a family and very quiet residential area, our house is an asset to discover the region.
We are located 10 minutes (by bike), 20 minutes (by foot) from Christchurch city center (CBD).
The closest park to our house (around the corner) is very popular with families. In addition to the playground and the rose garden, the park also offers a paddling pool.
Christchurch is crisscrossed with cycle paths, so take the opportunity to cycle, without having to worry about places and the cost of parking. We have two electric bicycles equipped with a child seat (up to 9 years old). We also have a car (Subaru Outback Legacy) that we can include in the trade-in.
The activities will not be lacking, here are some of the attractions of the region that we practice regularly.
Hikes / Walks
- Godley Head: a 10km walk (3h) with relatively little elevation, along the cliffs at the edge of the ocean, with a site of the 2nd World War, if there are clouds or the temperature is cool (no shade at all)
- Port Hills: several walking options to have beautiful views of the city, climbing to the edge of the crater or walking along it.
- Hinewai Reserve bush and waterfalls, different lengths, 2 hour loop in a private nature reserve where man has left nature to recover on its own.
- Orton Bradley ($10): bush walks and waterfalls, valley, 2-3 hour loop
- Quail Island, boat access, former quarantine island ($105)
- Castle Hill: a very special rock formation at the beginning of the Southern Alps and caving at Cave Stream (1h30 drive, 30 min to 3h walk of exploration or climbing on the site, crossing the cave allow 1h)
Park and Gardens, town center
- Botanical gardens and Hagley Park: a green space in the center of the city. You can spend a day exploring the Botanical Garden and the Park.
- Mona Vale: old luxurious property, the park is very wooded, at the edge of the river.
- Riccarton bush: forest as it covered much of the city 500 years ago, next to Mona Vale
- Travis Wetland: marsh as it covered the whole city less than 500 years ago, allow an hour for the loop, lots of birds
- Picking blueberries or other fruits in season
- Visit of the city and buildings, modern or reinforced for earthquakes
- Riverside Market and Farmers Market Riccarton Bush: street restaurant but very fine, with tables by the river
- For biking: Bottle Lake Forest and McLean Forest, commercial pine forests with bike circuits. Possibility to cycle on the beach too.
