General overview
Our hous is quirky - not a single room have same cladding on the walls. I have painted all of it, from inside-out. I love the light in the rooms, the space, the warmth of it and the privacy. Few other houses here are so hidden to the public eye. The veranda, rebuilded by a local contracter, is my absolute favorite place from April till October. The nature surrounding Notodden is another chapter of perks of living here.
The space
The ground floor consist of an entrance, with a toilet and washing mashine. Here you will also find stairs to the basment converted to a flat with separte entrance. We rent the flat through air bnb to students and visitors from the local campus.
The flat has high cellings, kitchen, huge bathroom, bedroom, foldout sofa and a single bed under the stairs. There is floorheating in the whole flat.
At the ground level you will also find a kitchen with the door to the veranda, starcase to the first floor with small working space and shelves with boardgames; and living room/dining room with a fireplace. Here you will also find the entrance to a small winther garden. This is lovely to use in February when the sun is up - it gets up to 25 degrees in there. Or when the weather is bad spring to fall.
At the first level there is three bedrooms, one rather small, containing my workshop as well. There is also a small bathroom. Master bedroom has a door to a balcony with a lovely view of the valley.
The veranda is spacious, with dining table, sitting arrangements, grill, trees and a bit of a view over the valley. Its quite secluded and private. The garden, although not big, surrounds the house. On the lower level of the garden we have a small treehouse, trampoline and a small inflateable pool mainly for kids.
We also have a mobile home, which can be rented if you wish to do so. There is space for 4 persons, and you can drive it with a regular licence.
Guest access
The house lies down a steep drive. During the winther its not possible to drive down. We park by the road and walk down. That presents a bit of an inconviniance, also clearing snow, so you have to be prepared for that.
Notes
The house is from 1945, and as mentioned has a lot of quirks as well as a lot of charm. The bathroom upstairs have not been renovated. Its fully functional and nice though.
I have painted the whole house inside out. It somwhat have a scandinavian and minimalistic interior style.
The trees surrounding the house are lovely, but also presents different kinds of residue. Are you very allergic to pollen I would not recomend comming here.

Neighbourhood
The neighborhood is quite safe, I often leave the main door or the car unlocked. There is a bit of wildlife here, deers visiting every morning. By the road there is a running track, not visble from the house. Around you will find houses of different size and styles - typical small town in the rural part of Norway.
We have two neighbours on each side. One we do share the driveway with. We live near the local school and university campus where I work as associate professor.
Getting to my home
There is a buss from Oslo to Notodden, but the absolute best way to get here is by car, which you will need to get around. We have a toyota hybrid we can exchange as well.
Nearest airport
Oslo Gardermoen and Torp Sandefjord are two hours aeay from Notodden.
Getting around
The groceries store is not very far, but downhill, so its better to shop using the car. The main street of Notodden lies at the bottom of the valley, which hillsides the town is placed upon. The town in its self is not very pitoresque. The nature surrounding it on the other hand truely is.

Joanna
Hi! I am Joanna. I am an artist and lecturer at a local campus. My boy, 11 years old, and I live in a rural part of Norway, Telemark county. Just around 1,5 hour from Oslo. We have exchanged houses before with people from Denmark, where we come from.
People Like Us is the world's most trusted home exchange community. We believe in sharing, trust, generosity, respect, communication, equality, cooperation, honesty, hospitality, friendship, flexibility and adventure. We take pride in our homes and we care about the environment in which we live: our village, city, country and our planet. We care about the ethos of home exchange and we do it because we love the experience and the friendships that it generates.
