General Overview

We live in a quiet, semi-rural area, but are only 10 minutes drive from shopping, including a Costco, two supermarkets, and a liquor store. We are just 12 minutes drive from Comox Valley International Airport (YQQ). The vibrant towns of Comox and Courtenay are 15 minutes away, and the charming mountain town of Cumberland is 25 minutes. A huge forested nature park is nearby, as are beach walks. An attractive garden surrounds our home, including a vegetable patch. We have done over 40 exchanges with another site. The Space

Our house is 2320 square feet (215 Sq.M) in area, with the master bedroom, en-suite bath, and outdoor deck upstairs. There are comfy king-size beds in the master and main floor bedroom, and a double Murphy bed in the spare bedroom. There are three bathrooms--two with walk-in showers and one with a bathtub and shower.

Guest Access

Alas, without adaptations our home would be challenging for a wheelchair-bound guest, but is otherwise easy to navigate. It's three steps to enter through the front door, and zero steps to enter from the attached garage. There are two steps between the living room and the main hallway, and one flight up to the master bedroom. We have two handholds in the walk-in, en-suite shower upstairs, and have just built a secure stairway with railings from our garden to the beach and small cabin below. Striking views of the Straight of Georgia (Pacific Ocean) are available from the main floor and upstairs windows and our two decks on the ocean side of the house.

Notes

Our private, 100-foot (30.48M) wide beach. provides a different perspective on the view across the Straight of Georgia to the Coast Mountains of mainland Canada. Our oceanside deck a lovely place to read, do yoga, or enjoy a meal or beverage while watching the eagles, Stellar sea lions, seals, and other creatures, and to watch the Alaska-bound cruise ships sail by. A recent exchange family were entertained by the antics of five Orca whales just off our beach this summer.

Neighbourhood

We have lived here for over 40 years and love our friendly, helpful, non-intrusive neighbours. That said, other exchange partners appreciated the solitude they found here, and enjoyed the private decks on the ocean side. Our strong wi-fi signal reaches to our front and rear decks, and is robust enough for anyone who is here on a working holiday.

Getting to my home

Air Canada and Westjet provide service to Vancouver, Calgary, and Edmonton multiple times a day. For the most scenic flights, Harbour Air flies Otter seaplanes between Comox and Vancouver harbours in summer. Visitors can also drive from Vancouver using BC Ferries via Nanaimo, or drive 3.5 hours from Victoria on the four-lane Inland Island Highway, or the more scenic two-lane Oceanside Highway. IslandLink provides Mercedes Sprinter van service to and from Victoria and the BC Ferries Nanaimo terminals.

Nearest airport

Comox Valley International Airport (YQQ) is a 14-minute drive from our home.

Getting Around

A car exchange is negotiable. We have a Toyota RAV4 Hybrid which seats five. You'll need to use our RAV or rent a vehicle to access shopping, restaurants, and other attractions. Tofino on the west coast is 3.5 hours away, as is the city of Victoria at the south end of the Island. Salmon fishing, whale watching, and grizzly bear tours are an hour away, as is superb hiking in Strathcona Provincial Park. Hornby Island, a world heritage site, is a two-hour road and ferry trip, as is Quadra Island.
