General overview

A guest house on 97 acres of ranch including forests and pastures which sits in the foothills of the coastal mountains that is large and comfortable and just renovated throughout. The property includes hiking and is a short drive from many of Oregons treasures. The house is a three bedroom, two bath and about 2000 sq ft. Beds for six plus a queen air mattress on a frame for additional guests. Since it is a guest house, swaps can be non-simultaneous. Generally no animals are in the home, but occasionally one of our border collies will keep us company inside so it might not be the perfect place for anyone who has dog allergies.

The space

The primary bedroom has a queen bed and TV. The secondary bedroom also has a queen bed. The third bedroom has two twin beds with room for the queen air mattress. The three bedrooms are at the back of the house with the primary bathroom (no bathtub). There is a second bathroom (no bathtub) on the other end of the home next to a utility room. The floor plan is true to a 1963 ranch house, but it has been extensively updated for a modern feel and comfort. The kitchen is a large galley style kitchen with new appliances and cabinets. The home also features a game room with a pool table and books and games.

Guest access

The home sits on a ranch is not generally accessible for those in a wheelchair or walker. There are two steps to get into the house at the front door. Inside the home, in order access the utility room and second bathroom, there are two steps down. There are grab bars in the primary bathroom for the toilet and the shower. The toilet also has a bidet feature and a heated seat.

Notes

This home is out in the country, but is only a short six minute drive to downtown Monmouth. Monmouth and Independence have full sized grocery stores, many restaurants and bars, tasting rooms, parks, and any other conveniences someone would want. Unfortunately we cannot have smoking or vaping on the property. We are not against children coming but please keep in mind that this is a working ranch and has hazards one might now expect in a “regular setting”. For example fencing is electrified. Any children will need to be constantly supervised and attended by adults.

Neighbourhood

The neighborhood is spread out enough to not be interacted with. However, we have many great friends that live on our street. Our street is actually a paved county road. The driveway to the home is gravel. A car is necessary for visiting.

Getting to my home

Flights into Portland (PDX) or Eugene (EUG) put you within about an hour from us. We are located an hour south of Portland and an hour north of Eugene. Amtrak runs into Salem.

Nearest airport

PDX (1.25 hrs) EUG (1.25 hrs)

Getting around

You will need a car to comfortably stay here. Ubers are available usually but cannot be relied upon. Car rentals are available in Salem and Corvallis as well as the major airports. For aspiring artists or those wishing to be in a quiet setting, Ubers can be hailed, but they cannot be relied upon as a daily commute option.

Family of four (17 y/o girl in high school and 18 y/o boy at uni) with extensive travel experience looking to travel more now that the pandemic has simmered down. Scott is a retired trial lawyer and I retired from the medical device world. We lived at one point in Amsterdam and then later, London before returning to Houston, Texas. We relocated to Oregon in July 2018 to enjoy the stunning PNW. Since we live on a ranch, we generally prefer to swap homes to go to a city or town, and the home be walking distance to shops and restaurants, and public transport if available. But that isn’t 100% of the time! We love exploring new areas. So don’t let that stop anyone from hitting us up for an exchange!
