Neighbourhood
Takoma Park is a welcoming place, where we know our neighbors and families start conversations with others at the park. The neighborhood is known to be racially diverse and LGBTQ+ friendly.
One thing we really appreciate is the active exchange of goods and services amongst neighbors. If there’s something that would make your stay more enjoyable - a certain size bike, a gaming system, a specialized coffee machine…or a forgotten item like a computer charger, let us know and we’ll see what the neighbors have to offer.
There are a lot of colorful, think pink and purple, houses of different shapes and sizes that make walks interesting. There are restaurants for all tastes. And all of this is before a short travel into Washington DC.
Takoma Park hosts several festivals throughout the year. We love the local Fourth of July parade but also really enjoy the porch festival when local and amateur artists perform on the front steps of homes all over the city.
Nearest airport
Dulles and BWI are 23 miles away, Reagan is less than 9 miles
There are many ride share options like Uber and Lyft plus a Metro (subway line) and public bus system
You can search for all three DC area airports using the code WAS
Getting around
We often rent the back studio part of our home on Airbnb and our guests are probably evenly split between those with a car and those without.
There are some good restaurants within walking distance and both a small grocery store and a national chain.
The metro, the public transportation system into the city, is about a 20 minute walk. It is a hilly walk, but the neighborhood has good charm so your focus can be elsewhere. The metro takes you downtown without any need to transfer trains, about a 20 minute ride. The National Zoo is the hardest to access via Metro from our house. You can also drive to the city in about twenty minutes while making few turns, a plus for visitors unfamiliar with the area.
Public bikes and scooters are close too (we have bikes we’d be willing to share too). My husband and I both bike into the city for work.
