General overview
It is suitable for older people (no stairs and no thresholds).
It is a spacious apartment, with enough space to live and enough to do. There is a large communal garden in the apartment building.
The space
There is a large living room, divided into a sitting area, a dining area with a large table and a kitchenette with dishwasher, induction hob with oven and microwave.
We have a master bedroom with a double bed, a small guest room with 2 single beds (1.80 m long) and a sofa bed for 2 people in the living room.
There is a bathroom with a very nice bath and a shower.
Guest access
We live on the first floor, there is a staircase or you can take the elevator.
There is a balcony at the front of the house and a large beautiful communal garden at the inside of the building. With enough space to sit and enjoy the garden. There is sun in the morning and shade in the afternoon (when it gets too hot in the sun).
Notes
Because we look after our two grandchildren (16 and 13 years old), there are toys in the house (lego, board games and jigsaw puzzles).
For a rainy day you can watch Netflix (from your smartphone/tablet or laptop with streaming/casting via chromecast to our TV screen (47 inch) via our Netflix account. And Dutch TV via our NL.ziet account. There is also good wifi "We no longer have normal cable television. And we do not have a computer for you. You have to bring your laptop, but we have good wifi."
We usually take our bikes with us on holiday, but if you really want to cycle, you can rent bikes in Vleuten. Let me know and I will give you the address. I will provide maps with walking, cycling and canoe routes.

Neighbourhood
Our house is located in the middle of the Netherlands, so everything is very easy to visit. It is located in the suburbs of Utrecht, a large old city, with beautiful Dutch churches and museums and canals throughout the city. It is a quiet neighborhood, but only 10 minutes walk and 10 minutes by train away from the center of a large city. There is a shopping center, with a supermarket, drugstore, bakery, bookstore, restaurants, ten minutes walk from our house. For children there is a nice playground at 3 minutes walk.
You can explore the area by bike, it is only 20 minutes to Haarzuilens castle (it is one of the oldest castles in the Netherlands), or 10 minutes to the Haarrijnse Plas with a beach.
By car you are in 20 minutes in the forests of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug for a long quiet walk. 40 minutes drive to the east and you are in the middle of the Veluwe, the largest nature park in the Netherlands. If you go north there is a large area with "polders" a Dutch landscape with green meadows, ditches and canals, 20 minutes by car to the north there are the lakes of the "Loosdrechtse plassen", where you can sail or kayak.
But if you want to go to other places, for example:
30 minutes to Amsterdam, with its museums and monuments, the zoo with planetarium, the Amsterdam Dungeons,
45 minutes to Rotterdam, the largest port in Europe, you can visit it with a Spido tour on the water, see the skyline of Rotterdam from the Euromast, go to Blijdorp, a large zoo with an underwater tunnel,
or 4 hours drive to Paris!
Or you go to the beach, that is only 2 hours drive.
If you like golfing, you can visit:
the golf course in Haarzuilens, only 6 minutes by car: http://en.leadingcourses.com/europe+netherlands+utrecht/golfclub-de-haar/
the golf course in Amelisweerd, only 20 minutes by car: http://www.amelisweerd.nl/
Getting to my home
Our house is located in the middle of the Netherlands, and everything is very easy to reach, you can come by car, there is enough parking space in front of the door.
Public transport is also very easy: you can come to Utrecht by intercity, and from there take the sprinter, to Vleuten station, then only a 7-minute walk to our house. Or you can take a taxi from Utrecht station, or we will pick you up.
Nearest airport
Amsterdam airport is close by (only half an hour by car or 1 hour by public transport) but flying is only necessary if you come from outside Europe. In Europe it is better to take the train or the car.
Getting around
Our house is about 5 minutes walk from the shopping center, 1 minute walk from a nice playground, 7 minutes from the train station. And then 5 minutes by train to the center of Utrecht. But also Amsterdam, Rotterdam are cities nearby.

I can tell them about the area or take them for a bike ride or a walk.
We returned delighted from our stay with Dirkje and Jan.
Their apartment is very practical and functional, in a quiet and pleasant residence.
Dirkje was a very pleasant exchange partner, with exchanges via whatsapp before, during and after easy, simple and efficient. On site, maps and advice for local tourism (super the lake 12 minutes by bike, we loved it as well as the castle of Haar 12 minutes also by bike, splendid!) and an apartment where you easily feel at ease and a bit like at home ...! In addition the shopping center nearby is a real plus for shopping.
A big thank you for the bikes, they are great and Dirkje managed to get us 2 bikes for the girls, great!
For those who want to explore further afield, the train station is a 10-minute walk or a few minutes by bike and you can reach all the cities easily and for a more than reasonable price (2.5 euros per day for children!!!) and in less than an hour you are in the center of Amsterdam or Rotterdam. For the beaches, it is better to take a car (special mention for the Meijendel dunes, superb!)
In short, we crisscrossed the country by bike, train or car, to discover lots of pretty cities (Utrecht, Gouda, Edam, Marken, Rotterdam, Amsterdam) and magnificent windmills (Kinderdijk and Zaanse Schans) all never far from Dirkje's, perfect!
We absolutely loved Dirkje’s cozy flat! It had everything we needed, from a well-equipped kitchen to a comfortable living space. The location was perfect, just a short walk to great shopping and a variety of fantastic restaurants. Dirkje was a gracious host, greeting us and giving us a personal tour, making sure we felt right at home. We couldn't have asked for a better stay and highly recommend this charming flat to anyone visiting the area.
We spent a long weekend at Dirkje's place and found it delightful. The space is lovely and is a close walk to a nearby train station, as well as a shopping center. Before our trip, she kindly shared a variety of suggestions for things to do. We had the best time - thank you!
Although we had no opportunity to meet Dirkje, we had good communication during the exchange and everything went smoothly. We had a few days of good weather to explore the neighborhood on bike and we used the train to travel to Amsterdam, Gouda and Utrecht. The flat is located very close to Vleuten Station which makes train trips easy. Maxima Park and the Castle der Haare are very close and easy to access by bike.
We had a wonderful stay at Dirkje and Jan's home. They have a very cozy home with tons of puzzles for the whole family to enjoy. They put together a lovely welcome bag with local favorites and a very useful manual and information on the surrounding area. We enjoyed walking to the nearby parks, and the bus was very close for adventures into Utrecht central or even Amsterdam. We very much enjoyed our time and our host Dirkje was so kind to communicate with. Thank you!
My husband Kevin's first stay in the Netherlands was made possible and pleasurable by the great accommodation provided by Dirkje and Jan. Utrecht centre with a great railway museum and beautiful canals is within easy reach by train. A small, but big enough, shopping centre is at walking distance, if you don't buy too many groceries in one go! ;-)
As we had wider interests, me being of Dutch origin, we had rented a car after the first few days for travel further afield.
The apartment itself is situated in a quiet neighbourhood with a peaceful communal patio/garden area. Great for relaxing at the end of the day with a glass of wine and nibbles. Dirkje and Jan, thanks for your hospitality.
Dirkje and Jan (accompanied by their small children) were the perfect guests, the house was very tidy and clean when we returned, what more could you ask for? Our neighbours confirmed that Dirkje and Jan had been discreet and respectful visitors!
Dirkje and her family stayed in our house for 6 days in July 2023. It has been easy and pleasant to communicate with Dirkje and they left our house in perfect condition. Everything was nice and tidy and they even helped to get ready for the next family to come. I send the warmest recommendations to Dirkje and her family. We hope one day to be able to come to Utrecht and experience their area.
we had a wonderful time in Sylvain and Aline's house, our grandchildren felt at home in Estelle and Solène's rooms. My husband and I had our own space downstairs. This is ideal with older children, as you don't have to share a bathroom. But I imagine that if you have slightly younger children, it's less pleasant.
We particularly enjoyed the lovely terrace in the shade of the big cherry tree, the hammocks and the jacuzzi. It was hot, so it was nice to cool off with the 35 degree jacuzzi. Thanks to the shutters, it stayed cool inside. The area is ideal for excursions, we visited the castle during the day and went to the sound and light show in the evening. The House of Magic was great fun and there are beautiful walking areas near the house.
Aline and her family were great hosts in our house, we found everything good on our return.
Communication with Aline was also easy, we had a simple contact via WhatsApp and we sent each other pictures of our activities, very nice. We will definitely visit them when we head south next year to know them "live".
Thanks for the exchange!
We will be delighted to welcome you during your next stay in France!
Aline and her family were great hosts in our house, we found everything good when we returned.
Communication with Aline was also easy, we had a simple contact via WhatsApp and we sent each other pictures of our activities, very nice. We will definitely visit them when we head south next year to get to know them "live".
Thanks for the exchange!
Lucy and her son stayed in our home. They were very friendly, and did take good care of our house. Thank you for being here. Dirkje.
Beth and her husband stayed for 5 days in our home. We had easy communication and everything was settled quickly. They where very good guests, and left everything in good order when they left. Thank you for being here.
The two best things about the house of Cara and Mat : it has so much space ! There are so many rooms, and so many tables, so if you want to make a jigsaw puzzle you can just leave it there, because you still have another table to eat and another one to play a boardgame. And the other thing is the inside pool, it is so nice to go swimming in the morning. Throwng a ball to eachother in the water is so much fun, and a great way to losen up your mussels in the morning.
Communication was easy, they are super friendly people, when we had trouble with the heating they gave a quick answer what to do.
And there is a lot to see and do, you can go for an easy walk just outside the house, or go for a hike at the Diana Felsen. There are nice places in the surrounding, Neurenberg with the castle and the underground tunnels, Bayreuth with the Eremitage with the water works. If you take a tour in the old castle you are in for a nice surprise. Pottenstein with the caves, and a rodelbahn.
We did enjoy the house and had a great time. Thank you, Cara and Mat !
Palmira and Joerg from Austria have stayed in our house for a globe. Sadly we did not meet them, but we had a good communication by mail, before and during their stay. Everything went well, they left our house in excellent order, Palmira even did the laundry, because there would be other guests after them without me coming home in between. That was very kind of them. I hope we will meet them some time. Thank you for being such good guests. Dirkje from Utrecht in the Netherlands.
Cassie and Jonathan and their children were guests in our house for a few weeks. We had the pleasure of meeting them when they arrived. They are people full of joy for life, including the children.
It was very nice to communicate with Cassie, they sent us photos and told us how they enjoyed the Netherlands. After departure the house was left in perfect condition. Thank you so much Cassie and Jonathan.
We were allowed to stay in the fantastic house of Ninna and her family for a globe, we had a fantastic time. Our grandchildren enjoyed the garden with the trampoline, the swimming pool, the ping pong table, the small soccer field with a goal and a korfball basket. So much to do ! And for a rainy day also a nice play station. The house itself is spacious, with everything needed easy to find. The beds are fine, the kitchen inventory complete. Everything was great. Thank you, Ninna.
Marion and Kevin were guests in our house for a globe for a few weeks while we were on vacation.
We met them beforehand, they are nice, flexible people, eager to discover the Netherlands: especially for Felix, because it was the 1st time he was in the Netherlands.
They have taken good care of our home, leaving it immaculate again.
Thank you, best regards, Dirkje

We want to travel alone in Europe. Because in the name of the environment we don't want to fly anymore. We love places where we can take beautiful walks in nature. Or take a canoe trip. But also visiting churches and other old buildings. Just a little bit of everything.
We are experienced home exchangers and have exchanged more than 40 times on another site.
"for a holiday we like to go anywhere in Europe, for weekends we like to go to Belgium or the Netherlands,"
