General Overview

Our one-bedroom apartment is located on the first (i.e. middle) and second (i.e. upper) floors of a 250-year-old three-storey building above a quiet office on a busy main street close to the centre of the historic market town of Penrith, in the county of Cumbria in north-west England.

The Space

The apartment itself is self-contained, and you will have sole use throughout your stay. On the first floor (i.e. up the first flight of stairs) there is an open-plan, lounge/kitchen diner equipped with two sofas, a small dining table with two chairs, and a kitchen with oven, electric hob and fridge-freezer. Please be aware that there is no dishwasher or washing machine. This room has a colour pallete of off-white, greys and blacks, and a clean and modern but cosy feel. The kitchen table provides a perfect spot for enjoying your breakfast and morning coffee, especially with the sunlight streaming through the window on a sunny day and, if need be, can be used as an extra work space. There is also a small WC room with toilet and sink on the same floor as the lounge. On the second floor there is a stylish modern bedroom with a boutique feel, and an en-suite bathroom with toilet and shower. The bedroom has a colour pallete of deep green, grey and white, and is light and airy due to its two velux windows. It has a desk, which can be used either as a workspace or as a dressing table for getting ready for your days and nights out, along with two cosy chairs and a footstool which are perfect for just relaxing and reading, especially on a sunny day. Should you plan to have extra guests, then one of the sofas in the lounge pulls out to form a small double bed, hence the apartment is listed as being able to accommodate up to 4 persons. Please note that, as the apartment is on the first (middle) and second (top) floors of a three-storey building, and is subsequently accessed via a set of stairs to the lounge and a second set of stairs to the bedroom, it is therefore not accessible to wheelchair users or persons that would normally have difficulties in such situations. If you have any doubts regarding access in this respect then please make sure to ask us for more information prior to organising a swap.

Guest Access

The apartment is up two sets of stairs, with the first set going from street level up to living room/kitchen area and the second going from this floor up to the bedroom and en-suite bathroom. The street can be pretty busy throughout the day and during the evening, and cars can often drive too fast past the property. In turn, the pavement is not so wide outside the front door, so you need to be careful of other pedestrians (and vehicles) when leaving. Guest access is via a set of keys kept in a lock-box outside the property at street level.

Notes

When it comes to your form of transport it's essential to be aware of the fact that the apartment DOES NOT HAVE ITS OWN DEDICATED PARKING SPACE AND THERE IS NO ON STREET PARKING DIRECTLY OUTSIDE. There are various options for paid (and, if you're lucky, free) parking within 5 minutes walk that we can advise on directly though, and the town is a safe place to leave your vehicle overnight in a local street. As such, please consider this matter carefully in your decision making process before you decide if a stay at this property will work for you. This issue really has been a make or break decision in various past enquiries for bookings, so if you don't like to be away from your (hire) car for any length of time, then please consider this factor.

Neighbourhood

Penrith — known as the Old Red Town for its beautiful sandstone buildings — has a charming historic centre and a rich past. Perfectly located between the Eden Valley, Lake District National Park, the Scottish Borders, and the Yorkshire Dales, it’s an ideal base for exploring some of the UK’s most stunning landscapes. The Lake District is world-famous for its lakes, forests and fells, and its links to literary greats like William Wordsworth, Beatrix Potter and John Ruskin. It offers some of the most breathtaking scenery in Britain and draws visitors from all over the world. From Penrith, you can easily explore the Lakes by bus or car. Regular services run to Ullswater, Keswick, and Windermere, with affordable daily bus passes available. If you’re driving, Ullswater is just 15 minutes away, Keswick about 25, and Windermere around 45. Nearby highlights include Aira Force Waterfall, Great Mell Fell, Derwent Water, and ancient stone circles like Long Meg and Her Daughters and Castlerigg. If you’re a keen walker, Penrith is within easy reach of many of Wainwright’s Northern, Eastern and Far Eastern fells - perfect for a day’s hiking. Wildlife lovers can look out for red squirrels, the UK’s oldest herd of red deer, and even semi-wild fell ponies grazing around Ullswater and Great Mell Fell. Outdoor enthusiasts are spoiled for choice - from fell-walking, canoeing, paddleboarding and cycling, to climbing, abseiling and mountain biking. For a slower pace, enjoy a round of golf at a scenic course, explore a historic village followed by afternoon tea, or take a gentle stroll around one of the nearby lakes. Closer to home, Penrith Castle Park (just around the corner) is home to the ruins of a 14th-century castle - a lovely spot for a short walk or picnic. You can also hike up to Penrith Beacon (about 30 minutes on foot) for panoramic views across the town and surrounding countryside. Cyclists will love that Penrith sits on the C2C (Sea to Sea) route and has been designated Cumbria’s first cycling hub, with bike hire and excellent routes starting right from town. Throughout the year, Penrith and the surrounding area host fantastic events — including Kendal Calling music festival at Lowther Deer Park in July and the Winter Droving in October. The town also has its own charming Alhambra Cinema, a restored Edwardian gem showing new releases and classics alike. Just outside Penrith, Rheged is a fantastic family-friendly destination with cafés, art exhibitions, a cinema, local shops, and indoor play spaces - ideal for rainy days or relaxed afternoons. Penrith and its nearby villages are full of great places to eat and drink, all within easy reach of your stay, including: Dockray Hall – A beautiful, historic inn that’s especially cosy in winter, with roaring fires, hearty Cumbrian food and local ales. Four & Twenty – Elegant, modern British dining with locally sourced ingredients. Gianni’s – A welcoming, family-run Italian with generous portions and friendly service. La Casita – Authentic Spanish tapas, sangria and a lively atmosphere. Indian Plaza – A local favourite for a delicious curry in a relaxed setting. The George & Dragon (Clifton) – A stylish yet relaxed country pub serving produce from the owners’ Lowther Estate. Fell Bar – A laid-back local favourite offering craft beers, wines and a great community feel — perfect for unwinding after a day exploring the Lakes.
