General overview

My home is a nature sanctuary and ideal for any person looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of a city and escape into nature. Over nearly 2 acres of land, it is surrounded by lush beautiful rainforest and located right in front of a river with a private fire pit area and cedar sauna in the forest. You can easily do a sauna session and jump into the river for a deep relaxation to your body. Located in the forest on our property are some very rare and majestic old-growth trees that are astonishing to marvel at. A large tire swing and tarzan swing hang from the large trees and fun for the young ones and young at heart! The house is located 7 mins drive from the town of Port McNeill where you can find all the major amenities you need - post office, pharmacy, grocery store, coffee shop, etc. It is also located 25 mins drive from the famed Telegraph Cove, which is the launching point to enter into the Broughton Archipelago to view all of the BC's renowned and iconic wildlife - killer whales, seals, sea lions, dolphins, porpoises, grizzly bears, etc. The waters are also incredible for fishing - salmon, halibut, lingcod as well as crabs and prawns. Multi-day Kayaking tours in the surrounding islands are an excellent way to encounter the marine wildlife and experience the ocean and coastline. Throughout the area you can find walks, hikes and trails for all levels. Drive out to the west coast, and you will find incredible and endless white sandy west coast beaches. This area really is like no other with the ocean and forest at your fingertips. Visitors come here purely to experience the beauty BC has to offer. The area and our home is very quiet, remote, and wild so if you're looking for an escape from the world, this is it.

The space

Our home is clean, comfortable and stylish with everything you need to cook gourmet meals at home. We have a small basic gym room with weights, a rowing machine, mini-bands, and kettlebell for anyone looking to stay fit in the home while away. The large wrap-around deck can also be a great place to do some morning yoga. Our fast and stable internet accomodates anyone looking to work remote. Our yard is fully fenced and large with a tree house playground. The house has a complete wrap-around deck for 360 views of the beautiful surrounding or if you want to a giant enclosed playpen! Stargazing at night from the deck is a bonus as the stars are incredibly bright on a clear night. The place is a private escape and you don't even need to leave the property to enjoy!

Neighbourhood

We live in a very quiet neighborhood at the end of the road where there are never any cars that pass.

Getting to my home

The most common way to get here is to drive up Vancouver Island to the home from Nanaimo (ferry to Nanaimo from Vancouver). Another option is flying to Port Hardy Airport and renting a car or taxi from the airport, which is about 30 mins drive away from the home.

Nearest airport

Port Hardy Airport. 30 mins drive from the home.

Getting around

You will definitely need a vehicle to get around as there is no public transit in the area. There are also remote locations to explore that require driving on logging roads. For the closer excursions, your standard vehicle is fine, but for farther, more adventurous journeys (especially to the west coast) you will need a 4x4 car.

Maureen

New to this home exchange experience, but very excited to try it. I live in one of the most beautiful places in the world in Northern Vancouver Island on the coast of British Columbia. My work revolves around coastal conservation throughout the coast of BC and I enjoy educating people about our local wildlife, habitats and conservation issues. I have a very young daughter and will aim to show her the world!
