General overview
Only five minutes from the Playground Center of the Columbia River Gorge , our home is both close to the action, yet just far enough to have complete privacy and quiet. We just purchased the 1.4 acre property and are excited to share it with the many exchangers who have previously stayed at our Naches Cabin.
Because this is our primary home, we are not comfortable accommodating animals or small children as much as we love them.
The space
There are two bedrooms available for exchange: a large master suite with bathroom; and a guest bedroom adjacent to the main bathroom with shower. The third "bedroom" is Vicki's sewing room, so it isn't available. A small deck leads off the master bedroom and a large deck adjoins the kitchen/breakfast table. A formal dining room is available for those wishing to use that.
Guest access
Everything is on one floor, though the front entry has three steps and there is no way to go into the house without at least two steps. I think it will be a good project for me to build a portable ramp--just don't expect it this year.
Notes
The Gorge attracts quite a young crowd of adventure seekers. It's one of the more liberal communities in the country, but still has a significant population of older, more conservative citizens. No matter your politics, you should feel accepted and comfortable here.

Neighbourhood
There are only a few homes in this area bordering the White Salmon River (which is a short walk from the house, though river access is impossible without a precipitous fall. White river rafting is a few minutes upriver and is provided by several professional outfitters. Great fun for thrill seekers. And the area is considered a world class fishery for those who like a somewhat less daring water sport.
Getting to my home
We are less than an hour away from Portland International Airport (PDX). Renting a car is easiest, but there is a passenger train from Portland to the Bingen/White Salmon station.
Nearest airport
PDX, about 45 minutes
Getting around
Realistically, a car is needed for convenience. Uber is available, however, for anyone comfortable with using that service.

We would be happy to answer any questions via email or in person.
James and Vicki are so accommodating and easy to communicate with and their place is in a beautiful spot with great access to some of the best that Washington and Oregon have to offer. We really enjoyed our (all too short) stay there. They even organised some lovely weather for us. Perfect.
Such a lovely couple. We had planned to host them, but ended up having to do a makeover of a rental home to get it on the market. They aren’t the first to leave a really special creation as a gift. But wow! I’d like to post a photo of the art piece Peter did of Mount Hood here, but I don’t see a way to do it, so it will be on the group Facebook page.
A lovely spacious and comfortable home in a beautiful private setting. The surrounding garden is full of flowers and vegetables with the most delightful porch and back deck for sitting out. We ate all our meals outside watching the martins soaring overhead.
Great access to white water rafting and kayaking nearby whlist it's a short drive south to the Columbia Gorge or north to Mt Adam's. Forests everywhere with many trails to choose from.
We were welcomed with a bottle of wine and helpful notes and although we didn't manage to meet, we felt completely at home thanks to easy prior communication.
Jim recommended the local White Salmon bakery so we duly joined the long line for our turn to make the agonizing decision of what to buy; not only was it well worth it but we chatted to such friendly people in the queue.
Thank you Jim and Vicki for an all-too-short exchange!
Vicki and James are great guests. We had many communications before and during the exchange, we met each other when they arrived at our condo and hit if off right away exchanging and talking like if we knew each other since a long time. They gave us feedback about our restaurant recommendations, hints and tips about how they manage their other home exchanges over the years.
Our condo was in perfect condition when we came back.
Great guests and very very nice people. We’ll certainly go visit them at their home at some point in time!
And you two will always be welcome. Would love to have Denis and I enjoy a top notch meal created by Vicki and Marie France!
James, Vicki, and extended family were great guests in our home. They communicated well, and left our home in a very good condition. We'd welcome them back anytime. Although we didn't get to meet in person, our neighbors told me "Jim was awesome".
Vicki and Jim were fantastic guests. I would absolutely exchange with them again! They took wonderful care of the house and communication was always easy. We are grateful to know them and to have begun this friendship with them through home exchange.
Perfect location overlooking McGill University and a short walk to great restaurants and the city’s subway system. Denis is an exceptional communicator and Marie France is into gourmet cooking.
Delightful people who know how to experience life. Articulate, funny, high-energy…would love to have them as neighbors. We plan to visit them sometime in the future. Their place looks great.
Judy is a delight. The house is magnificent. The site unique. We didn’t talk with Larry, but he sounds pretty wonderful, too. If you get a chance to stay at their “Smart Home”, do it. We’ve been exchanging for quite a few years and in many great homes. But the WOW in this place leaves you speechless. I had to come home and clean toilets and paint bedrooms to feel grounded.
Ha! Thanks!
Carey and Peter are the dream guests we all hope to have! Wonderful communicators, appreciative of what we offer them, respectful of our properties, and CLEAN. They are always welcome to come back. Vicki and I really want to make it to New Zealand, and knowing we have a home waiting for us may make it a reality. However, if we don’t make it, we did make friends, and that’s what home exchanging is all about.
Loved these new friends. Bjarne and Maria exemplify what’s great about PLU, giving more than they receive and showing their appreciation for every kindness offered. Perfect guests! We don’t know when we’ll make it to Denmark, but seeing them and enjoying their part of the world is something to look forward to.
Karen and a friend spent a weekend in our home. Although we didn’t meet, all communications were fun and fast. They left our home in perfect condition. We look forward to completing the exchange this summer.
Julie and Patrick are a wonderful young couple with great kids. We so enjoyed getting to know them. Their house is perfect for active families with super kid-proof floors and furniture. They were excellent guests and hosts. Their home is located centrally, so getting to any place in Austin took 15 minutes. Supposedly the traffic can be bad, but we never saw that. Be sure to try one or more of the great BBQ brisket joints if you eat beef. And, of course, go to the jazz clubs. We did the presidential library for Johnson as well as a trip to his ranch. It’s worth doing. And a side trip to San Antonio was just great.
Loved this family! Sweet, tidy, and the kind of exchangers you want.

We prefer unusual locations, both nearby and far. A treehouse, a boat, a rustic cabin, or a high rise all appeal, but a modest home is great too if it’s near something fun.
