Neighbourhood
About a three-mile long old-school beach neighborhood with nine public ocean accesses. Four world class resorts are fairly close. Mauna Kea and Westin Mauna Kea (previously Hapuna Prince) to the north. Fairmont Orchid, and Mauna Lani Auberge to the south. Good walking, and a very small general store/dive shop about 1/4 mile away.
Puako is a great bike, swim, walk neighborhood.
Nearest airport
KOA (Kailua-Kona) about 35 minutes away. Or ITO (Hilo) about 1 3/4 - 2 hours away.
Getting Around
You'll want your own car, unless you load up on groceries and stay around here -- which is possible. It's just that most people like to explore a bit. We do have a wonderful volcano and national park after all. That's about 2 1/2 hours drive from us. You can ride bikes, or walk, to many snorkel spots, beaches or 2 resorts. You can ride to the other 2 resorts, it's just that it's hillier (up and down) to get to the ones to the north of us. Also, to the south, you can ride to a decent grocery store, and a few good restaurants (the shops at Mauna Lani).

Do you want the best of the US? Puako on the Big Island of Hawaii, just has to be it! Its tropical, oceanfront, coral reef right out in front, abundant sealife and so peaceful and relaxing and yet close enough to all the amenities you could want without it being in your face.
Barbara and Jack's home is so well positioned, and appointed for a great exchange experience. There are gorgeous beaches and rocky bays a short walk or ride away, magnificent reefs to snorkel or kayak, SUP or whatever watersport activities you love to do. There are resorts, food options and shopping nearby if you dont want to spend time in the bigger towns, and the roads to get to Kona and the airport are top notch.
We stayed here for 8 wonderful nights and absolutely loved every moment. The home is spacious, beautifully designed, so relaxing and offers a breathtaking view of the ocean—waking up to that every morning was unforgettable. The spa was a true highlight; relaxing in the hot bubbles after a day of exploring felt like paradise. The homes Lanai options are great for spending time soaking up the sun and views or seeking shade and breeze depending on the weather and well set up for outdoor dining.
The property has a lovely kitchen garden, which made cooking fresh, meals even more special. The kitchen itself was well-equipped, and the open layout made it easy to move around the space inside.
The outdoor shower was a new experience and very much enjoyed after Hawaiis warm days.
Jack and Barbara were warm, responsive, and clearly take pride in maintaining such a beautiful space.
This has definitely been one of our favourite PLU exchanges to date and Barbara & Jack made it so easy and welcoming for us we so highly recommend a visit to their wonderful part of the world.
Wow, wow, wow! We had the most amazing time at Barbara and Jack’s bespoke home complete with the most beautiful view nightly of glorious sunsets over the Pacific ocean. The property location is stunning and the guest house is elegant and oh so comfortable. We loved picking tropical fruit from their trees, sleeping with the door open to the breeze, and taking outdoor showers. Located half way between the super fancy resorts and walkable to fantastic snorkeling, their place is the perfect home base for exploring the island. We just couldn’t recommend it any more highly and are so very hopeful we will have the opportunity to return - especially to share another meal with Jack and Barbara who are super fun and perfect hosts!
Barbara & Jack were wonderful hosts and their guest house in west Hawaii is comfortable and well equipped. They are seasoned exchangers and have the perfect set up. We look forward to returning some day!
We absolutely loved having Barbara and Jack stay in our home. So friendly and kind. The treasured our home and left it absolutely spotless! We met up with them twice and they are just delightful.
We would happily recommend them to any future hosts and can’t wait to travel to Hawaii when the time is right.
Aloha 😊😊😊
The most lovely guests! Had the pleasure of meeting both Barbara and Jack and their friends in Hobart. Would love to host them again 😊😊😊
It was a pleasure having Barbara, Jack and their 4 guests stay at our Bicheno home. They left the house clean and well taken care of, which we truly appreciate.
Communication has been great right from the initial stages of organizing our exchanges and during the stay.
Upon their exit from our home, the group followed all instructions and left the home clean, tidy and organised. We would happily exchange with them again in the future and recommend Barbara & Jack for any future exchanges. We look forward to seeing their lovely home on the big Island of Hawaii in October!
When I greeted Barbara and Jack as they alighted the skybus I knew I had made life long friends. What a beautiful couple, so friendly, kind and interesting. I could have talked to them for hours but as they only had a few days in Melbourne I had to acquaint them with our apartment and the local area and leave them to their holiday.
They were perfect guests, communication was excellent and our home was left in perfect condition.
Although this arrangement was via a globe, we hope to get to Hawaii one day and catch up with Barbara and Jack for a bubble for us girls, a red for the boys, and a long chat.
Ray was fantastic, again. He and Mel stayed at our home recently and were great guests. We spoke on the phone a few times (as we had a house problem) and Ray was super helpful.
They are welcome back anytime.
Gemma and Dimitri are wonderful! And their home is too!. We had an amazing stay in Hobart largely due to the home and it's location. We walked everywhere (and only twice took an uber "home" as we had wandered quite far.
The house is big, so many places to hang out, and the beds are scrumptious. Yes, really.
The kitchen room and dining table there are fantastic--super light-filled and with great views.
Can you tell, we really loved staying at Gemma and Dimiti's home.
PS, the lemons in the back yard are delicious and juicy.
We loved having you stay! See you in Hawaii when we choose a time to fly xx
This is the most wonderful home in Hobart for many reasons. Gem is a wonderful host, the home is in a fantastic, right on the edge of downtown and residential areas, and Hobart is fantastic. Can't recommend Gem and her home more than 5 stars, 100%, and so many thumbs up. Barbara and Jack
Ray’s house is fantastic! The view is all encompassing and the area to view from is super comfortable and functional. We stayed with 3 couples and all loved being there. Plus Bicheno is a great east side town. Not too big, not too small. Wonderful nature abounds. Thank you Ray!
Kelley was fantastic! And the apartment is in a good downtown location. The free trolley is close by and other public transportation is reasonably priced. We only stayed 4 nights and should have stayed longer! Everything was very comfortable and easy to think we really lived there. Thank you Kel and Mick.
Carrie and Peyton were delightful. We had a lovely dinner together before Jack and I left home. Carrie is extremely easy to communicate with, quickly too, and is an interesting easy-going person. The kind of "people" we love to meet.
Jacky and family were great. We got to meet them for an evening with impromptu dinner and wine. They left the "house" clean and they were happy. That's the best, right?
"We're thinking of summer 2024. That's a great time to come to Hawaii too!"
