Neighbourhood
Our neighbourhood is situated in a beautiful area. From the end of our road you have a beautiful lake view and a five minute walk from our home you have access to walking paths leading through the forest to Arresø, the biggest lake in Denmark, and from the forest alongside the canal to the city centre of Frederiksværk. If you take a detour up hill half way to the the city, you will find a nature playground. In Frederiksværk you can stroll through the pedestrian street, rent canoes and enjoy the scenery from the canal side. It is possible to follow the canal either to the harbour and the fjord or to the lake. In the middle of the pedestrian street there is a water post with a miniature model of the canals in Frederiksværk that our kids love to play with. A brand new play ground just opened this year (2021) next to the church downtown and very close to the best ice-cream shop with homemade ice-cream and homemade cones.
You will find one of Denmark's most beautifully placed golf course a ten minute walk from our home. There is an 18 hole course as well as a beginners course and a driving range. There is also a restaurant on site.
A ten minute drive will take you to the beautiful beaches and atmospheric summer towns of Liseleje or Tisvildeleje. Both places also have great nature play grounds in the forest next to the beach.
You can also drive to Hundested (15 min) with its lively atmosphere at the harbour with galleries, working glass smithy, restaurants (one of them has a micro brewery), mini golf, sand sculpture festival and ice cream shops. Right next to the harbour there is a beautiful beach and a really pretty walking path to the house of Knud Rasmussen (a famous Danish Greenland explorer) and the lighthouse. If you are up for a longer walk, you can continue on to the pretty, little fishermen's village of Kikhavn.
The neighbouring harbour of Lynæs (15 min) also has an energetic summer atmosphere concentrating around the surf center where you can rent gear for surfing, kite surfing, stand up paddle and more. The surf center also has a burger shack and bakery and is a lovely place to hang out. Our kids love going out there to watch the kites while playing on the sand dunes.
The fairytale-like castle, Frederiksborg Castle, with the surrounding baroque gardens is just a 30 minute drive away as is Fredensborg Castle, the Royal crown prince family's second residence.
Copenhagen with all its fun and history to explore is no more than 45-60 minutes away. Here you will find the beautiful Tivoli Gardens (amusement park), the royal residence of Amalienborg Castle, Nyhavn (the famous inner harbour with the colourful buildings), The Little Mermaid, Christiansborg (the parliament), museums, theaters, the longest pedestrian street and so much more. We highly recommend a canal tour to get your bearings and get a quick glimpse at all the city has to offer.
Our favourite museum is Louisiana (art museum) with its wonderful combination of art, architecture and nature situated right on the shore of Øresund and just a 45 minute drive from our home. We enjoy the longer drive along the north coast of Zealand with the sea view, beaches and atmospheric harbours when we drive back home.
Helsingør (Elsinore) with the atmospheric cobblestone streets, Kronborg Castle, Maritime Museum of Denmark and the ferries to Sweden (a 20 minute crossing) is also a favourite and just an hour away.
You can also drive to Sweden via the bridge from Kastrup. It takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes to drive to Malmö. If you want to check Germany off your list as well, it takes around 2 hours 10 minutes to drive to the ferries to Germany (the shortest crossing takes 45 minutes).
Legoland is a three hour drive away. It is possible to make it as a day trip - we sometimes do.
Nearest airport
Copenhagen Airport is about an hour drive from our home or a two hour trip with public transport (train and bus).
Getting around
Our home is a 15-20 minute walk from the city center or a five minute drive.
Bus no. 320 stops 7 minutes from our home and goes by our city centre to Frederiksværk Station and then onto Frederikssund Station in one direction or to Helsinge Station in the other direction. From Frederiksværk and Helsinge Station there are trains to Hillerød Station, where you can catch the S-train to Copenhagen.
