General overview
Our special place is located in the quaint, historical and picturesque village of Akaroa, on Banks Peninsula, roughly 1.5 hours from central Christchurch. Our townhouse is centrally located, however our home is very quiet as we are a block back from the waterfront, with its array of restaurants, shops and bars. We are around 150 meters from the seafront and we can see the sea from our balconies. The main beach area is around 10 minutes walk. This is our second home, but as we stay here quite a lot, it feels more like a home rather than a holiday house. It is well furnished and equipped.
The space
We have a centrally located 3 story townhouse with 3 double bedrooms. The master bedroom on the top floor has a huge king size bed and it also has an additional single bed. This bedroom flows out onto the top balcony with a sea view, where you can sit and watch the sun go down with a glass of wine. On the ground floor you will find 2 good size bedrooms. One has another super king bed, a travel cot and baby change table (these can be removed if not required). The third bedroom has a queen size bed and opens up to a small outdoor area. There is a modern bathroom with a shower, bath and toilet on the ground floor and 2 further toilets on the upper floors. The kitchen and living areas are located on the mid floor. The kitchen is brand new (Dec 2022), with everything you need - expresso machine, air-fryer etc. The kitchen and living areas are open plan and lead onto the balcony where the BBQ is located, along with a small outdoor table and 2 chairs. The dining area has seating for 6 people, and the modern leather lounge suite will sit 7 people comfortably. There is an air-conditioning unit (heat pump) for warming in the winter or cooling in the summer on this floor. We have 2 kayaks available for use with 2 adult kayak life vests and trolleys for easy beach access, 2 minutes walk away. We have a very small enclosed yard, suitable for a small dog. Smoking is permitted, but obviously outdoors only please. We house our boat in our garage, but there is plenty of on street parking directly outside our property.
Guest access
Our house is on 3 levels and unfortunately would not be suitable for anyone with any type of mobility issues. Our grandchild stays but if you have small children there are 2 flights of stairs and it may not be suitable. Our outside space is very small and fully enclosed.
Notes
If you don't have a car then this shouldn't stop you visiting, as there is a daily bus service, which can drop you off around 100 meters from our house. When you are here you don't need a car, as you can access everything - the supermarket, restaurants, bars, local attractions, beach, library, cinema etc all within 15 minutes walk. If you have a car then further afield you can find 3 wineries and vineyards and all the wonderful scenic bays, beaches and views of Banks Peninsula.

Neighbourhood
To give you an idea of what to expect, Akaroa is a small town and basically has everything that you would expect a small town would have including services like a hospital (no ED), school, library, museum. We have facilities like a supermarket, restaurants, bars, cinema and a few specialty shops. There are numerous walking tracks in the surrounding area from 20 minutes to 8 hours. A lot of people come here to experience the wildlife, and there are currently a number of dolphin cruises and swimming with dolphin experiences. The Giants House is unique and well worth a visit.
Getting to my home
Akaroa is roughly 1.5 hours from central Christchurch. There is a daily bus service and you can walk from the bus stop to our house with your luggage.
Nearest airport
Christchurch International Airport is roughly 1.5 hours drive.
Getting around
As we are centrally located everything is within a 15 minute walk from here.
We had an absolutely wonderful time at Jo’s lovely property in Akaroa. Very well equipped and well thought out, it has given me ideas to improve our listing! The location is great, with close walks to a waterfall, gardens and shops with lots of bird life and lovely views of the bay. It was a very relaxing stay and exactly what we were after and we really appreciated Jo’s hospitality as all communications were clear and friendly. A great first experience with PLU.

Such a lovely couple to have stay as our first exchange. Sue was good to deal with and everything went according to plan. Would recommend an exchange with them. I look forward to staying at their home in Bali.

My husband and I are in our early 60s and semi retired. We still run a small tourism business in Christchurch. We have lived in Europe for 10 years way back in the 90's and returned to New Zealand to raise our 3 children born in the UK. We are now grandparents and semi retired and have the time to travel again. Can't wait!
