Neighbourhood
Relaxed living and outdoor life. As a family, we walk or cycle most days. In the summer, we swim and kayak in the two local rivers (Nore and Barrow) and we can tell you the best spots and where the lifeguards are. Mount Brandon is nearby for hiking too. There are several golf courses within 30 minutes drive, the most famous being Mount Juliet, which is hosting the Irish Open.
Thomastown is the most local town being only 1 km away. It is small, but very friendly. If you want to chat, simply sit outside the cafe on the main street and someone will probably talk to you. The same will happen in any of the pubs. It has several pubs, about 5 cafes, two large supermarkets, several small groceries, petrol station, two restaurants, playground, Grennan Mill Craft School, a horse riding school, a train station, a post office, ATMs, etc.
Kilkenny City is well known and about 15 minutes drive away. It's pretty, and historic. The Castle draws lots of tourists in the summer. There are also quite a few festivals over the summer. The famous arts festival will be on from the 4th to 14th of August: https://www.kilkennyarts.ie/. It has a population of about 25,000 (more of a big town than a small city) - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kilkenny
Nearest airport
Dublin airport is 1 hr 28 minutes away via the M9 by car.
Shannon airport is 2 hours 6 minutes away by car
Getting around
Nearest shops are about 1 km away. It's an easy cycle, but an even faster drive! Public transport is pretty poor in the area. There is a train from Thomastown to Kilkenny, running on the main Waterford-Dublin line. There is also a local bus that goes into Kilkenny and returns twice a day. Neither run late, and their times are relatively infrequent. You're about 1 km away from where the bus leaves, and about 2 km from the train station. If you're coming for relaxing, and walking etc you could get by without a car, but if it's for anything else, you'll need one. We are happy to do a mutual car swap.
