General overview

* Looking for swaps in 2024 + 2025 * Typical German half-timbered house, large (180m2) & bright and spreading out on 3 floors. It's a cosy, well equipped and inviting house with a nice garden in one of Bonn's nicest neighbourhoods. Very family friendly - lots of equipment & toys for kids. The location is a five minute walk from the beautiful river Rhine and only two tram stops away from the city centre of Bonn (Germany's capital until 1990!). In 2020, Bonn was rated among the top 10 "Best to travel" city destinations of the world by Lonely Planet! Lots of interesting nature (the Rhine, lakes, forests, mountains..) but also worth-seeing German cities are really just around our corner: Cologne, Düsseldorf, Aachen, Frankfurt, Koblenz... to only name a few. Perfect location to explore Europe by car or train: Other countries like the Netherlands, France, Belgium and Luxemburg are only a 1-2 hours drive away. We promise you won't get bored! :)

The space

Over the last years, we have spent much time in creating our home the way it is. To us, it's an oasis of relaxation and the kids adore all the play opportunities. We simply love spending time in it and in our self-created garden! The ground floor consists of a kitchen (fully equipped with microwave, dishwasher, XXL oven, professional "barista style" coffee machine etc.), a spacious living room, a TV/guest room and a bathroom. On the first floor you'll find two bedrooms/playrooms for children (with lots of toys for kids from approx. 0-10 years), a connecting room and yet another bathroom. Please respect that our study will not be accessible during your stay. On the second floor there is a beautiful and bright studio / master bedroom and a small bathroom. For the kids, our garden offers several swings, slides, a trampoline, gymnastics bars, a paddling pool, a big sandpit, a play house and a lot more to play with. For the adults, there's a large terrace with several relaxing options, for example, a "Strandkorb" (a traditional Northern German beach chair), comfortable sunbeds etc. We like sitting on our Italian-style terrace & having a coffee in the sun... :-) Other amenities: - Home gym / gym equipment - Antique Chess table to play on - Table tennis & table soccer - Many boardgames, dvd collection, book collection (German, English, Spanish, Italian, French), CDs - Lots of indoor and outdoor play equipment / toys for kids from 0-10 years - The house is warmed with an underfloor heating system - a fabulous way to heat the rooms and always have warm feet

Guest access

3 floors (connected by staircase), 180 m2 in total. One small step up at the entrance.

Notes

We love our home and will treat yours as if it were ours. We will do our best to make you feel welcome and comfortable in our house! :-) We can usually offer our bikes to explore the area (just ask us), e.g. for bike tours along the Rhine promenade. We have 2 adult bikes, 2 kids' bikes (for the ages of approx. 5-6 and 7-8 years) as well as some balance/trainer bikes for toddlers and four pedal scooters (2 for adults, 2 for kids). We can almost always offer our guest room for hospitality stays ( up to 2 people, maybe an additional child). We speak English. Hablamos español. Parliamo italiano. Nous parlons français.

Neighbourhood

Bonn was rated among the top 10 "best to travel" city destinations of the world by Lonely Planet in 2020. :-) Our house is super close to both the rivers Rhine and Sieg (with beaches & water activities) in the beautiful and relaxed neighborhood of Bonn's district Beuel. It is one of Bonn's nicest and greenest neighbourhoods & super close to the centre of Bonn (two tram stops only)! In and around Bonn there is so much to do and see: culture, history, nature... The city has 2000 years of history and used to be the Capital of West Germany from 1949 to 1990! You won't need a car to get around, but if you bring one you can park it in front of our house. Lots of families live in our direct neighbourhood and it's a friendly atmosphere around here. You'll find everything for your everyday need within walking distance (several bakerys, supermarkets, drugstores, pharmacies, post office, restaurants, playgrounds...). One of Bonn's sights is just a three minute walk away: the well-known 12th-century DOPPELKIRCHE SCHWARZRHEINDORF ("double church") which is considered being one of the most beautiful Romanesque churches in Germany (its architecture is truly impressive). - Bonn is known as a CITY OF MUSIC - the world-famous German composer Ludwig van Beethoven was born here. His birthplace is now the museum BEETHOVENHAUS that houses the largest Beethoven collection in the world, using impressive authentic documents to vividly depict his life and work. There are also a lot of events connected to Beethoven taking place in Bonn, e.g. the Beethovenfest Bonn (every year from mid-September to mid-October). - Go hiking in the city's surroundings called SIEBENGEBIRGE ("seven hills") where you can visit the CASTLE DRACHENBURG, go up top until you reach the DRACHENFELS castle ruins and have a fantastic view of Bonn and the region. - When the weather’s nice, you can go to the RHEINAUEN, Bonn’s largest park, and lie out in the sun, go paddling or play sports. - Visit one of the largest and oldest Universities of Germany, the UNIVERSITÄT BONN. Its main building is the former residential palace of the Prussian kings. Several interesting museums are associated with the University. - A good way to explore the former FEDERAL GOVERNMENT QUARTER (Bundesviertel) is by following the Weg der Demokratie (Path of Democracy), a self-guided walking tour taking in 20 key historic sites. - Climb up to a terrace on the ALTER ZOLL (a bastion in the city’s fortifications), enjoy the view of the Rhine and have a BÖNNSCH (the local beer) in the Biergarten (beergarden) nearby. - Among Bonn's attractions are numerous museums, many of them along the city's famous MUSEUMSMEILE ("museum mile"). There is an excellent museum about German contemporary history ("Haus der Geschichte"). You can see what it’s like to attend a Bundestag debate, view an original piece of the famous Berlin wall etc. Another worth seeing museum is the Bundeskunsthalle, one of Germany's top exhibition venues (there are up to ten exhibitions at any one time). - Visit one of Germany’s oldest churches, the BONNER MÜNSTER (Bonn Minster) and its Romanesque cloister (the best-preserved one in Germany). - Have a look a the beautiful baroque POPPELSDORF PALACE and its BOTANICAL GARDEN (the University's botanical collection). - A BOAT TOUR on the Rhine is a must :-) - In the south of Bonn lies the WALDAU FORREST where you'll see wild boars, fallow deer and red deer in forest clearings. The attraction also has an information centre revealing the ecology of the wider Kottenforst which unfolds over 40 square kilometres south of Bonn. Outside there’s a kitchen garden growing vegetables and herbs, an ADVENTURE PLAYGROUND and a cafe for a bit of refreshment after your walk. - And then there is CARNIVAL... a major event referred to as the "fifth season of the year" which takes place every year in Bonn, usually 6 days in February or March. So don’t be surprised if you happen to be standing in the queue at the bakery behind someone in a cow costume... just dress up as well! ;-) - Visit Bonn's neighbour city COLOGNE with all its numerous sights, including the Kölner Dom (Cologne Cathedral), the well-known COLOGNE ZOO (more than 10,000 animals, over 800 species, all in exciting animal houses and enclosures) and so much more. - Other worth seeing cities nearby Bonn are DÜSSELDORF (1h drive), KOBLENZ (45min drive), AACHEN (1h drive) and FRANKFURT (1,5h drive). All of them are easily reachable by car or train.

Britta

We are a family of three: Britta (study advisor), Clara (born 2014) and Elisa (born 2017). I, Britta, have always loved traveling and getting to know other people, cultures, languages... and it seems I have already passed on the travel bug to my kids! :-) We are also active on another HE platform and on Coachsurfing where we have had wonderful experiences with people from different countries! At the very end of the pictures you will find some reviews of our house from previous exchanges (and AirBnb). If possible, we would like to meet the people we are exchanging with for coffee or another activity - because a home exchange is a great way to meet like-minded people. :-) So please send us an inquiry or an invitation, we are open for all destinations (during school holidays but also on weekends) and look forward to swapping our home with you!
