**Attention! Non-smoking guests only!
Welcome to our little casa in the hills of the little farming town of Cabrera, Dominican Republic!
Our house is a two bedroom, one bathroom bungalow with an ocean view. The front bedroom of the house has a slider to the pool deck and a queen bed and A/C*. The back bedroom has two twin beds that can be put together to make a king bed. The main living area has an open floor plan with seating for eating and relaxing under a vaulted ceiling. There are ceiling fans in each room. The sofa can also convert to a full sized bed. Enjoy the warm tropical weather while sipping cool cocktails poolside. Or visit one of several gorgeous beaches that are a 5-10 minute drive away. At night the gates can be closed but the windows and sliders left open to take advantage of the cool night breezes.
The space
The home was built in 2005 and then left standing unused for over 10 years until we bought it and fixed it up. It's a solid house, but it's not brand new. And there are as always in the country side of Cabrera, loose cows and friendly dogs who like to wander over. The music from town during festivals and special holidays (depending on the wind direction) can be heard at night. So to say it's very quiet there would be misleading. But, we are close to everything and it's a trade off.
*A/C usage is electrical grid dependent which means it can be inconsistent. Also, it adds greatly to the electrical cost.
Guest access
I‘m sure this is meant in terms of mobility (it‘s all one level) But, getting up the hill to the house (and this warning includes our drive) requires a 4x4 vehicle.
Notes
You will need a car. You can walk down to the waterfall and/or grocery store and back if you are fit 😉. But all of the beautiful beaches and natural wonders are a 5-10 minute drive.

We hosted Rene and her family for a week amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, which included plenty of communication and flexibility prior to their actual stay. Throughout the planning stage communication was open and easy. When we returned you could tell that they truly cared and respected our house (and family pets) as their own. We would welcome Rene and family back anytime!! -Jon

Neighbourhood
Naranjito is a small barrio in the hills above Cabrera a non-touristy city of about 25,000. There are over 2000 expats from North America and Europe living full time in the area, many in homes that they built.
Getting to my home
The easiest and least expensive way: Fly into SDQ (Las Americas) and take an Über or taxi to the Caribe Tour Bus depot at the base of the Autopista 7. It’s 450 pesos ($8.50 USD) to Cabrera. Less than the tolls. Air Conditioned and fast! Everyone makes way for these buses!
Nearest airport
SDQ (163 KM), POP (93 KM), AZS (61 KM)
Getting around
Our car is available to rent for $10 per day (it’s owned as part of an LLC and can’t be loaned out) There is nothing cheaper than $35 per day. So you can use it for a few days as needed or your whole stay.

We had a great time in Cabrera. It was very interesting not to be in a resort, but to get to know the normal Dom Rep and life away from the big hotel chains. Rene's house is very well located, close to the center and yet very quiet with a great view, has everything you need for a rest. During our week we spoke to Rene several times - she was always available for us and gave us tips. A car is certainly very helpful. TomTom Navigation does not know the road to Cabrera - Waze is much better navigation locally. Thank you Rene for your hospitality and support! Best wishes also to Judy!
Rene’s house is very well located. There are gorgeous beaches driving in either direction. A lagoon with a zipline is also very close. The house is within walking distance of a tourist attraction, Saltadero, a beautiful waterfall (We were lucky in November; there was a lot of water there). We love that the house is on a hill, so it’s nice for star gazing at night. Rene’s house is very comfortable for us with everything you need, the ground is large, and the pool is absolutely a bonus. Rene communicated with us promptly even though she was travelling during our stay. It’s our first trip to DR, and now we have a much better appreciation of this country and its people. Thanks, Rene and family, for having us stay for two great weeks.
Thank you, Tamila and Tim, for being great guests, and sorry for the extra authentic experience of having a phase of power cut!?! 🤪 Everyone here is hoping to see you again!
We spent two wonderful weeks of vacation in Renè's house.
The house is very welcoming, perfectly equipped to make you feel at home.
Cabrera is a charming town that is less touristy than other areas of the Dominican Republic that we visited on two or three day excursions; for this reason it is less crowded, with very beautiful beaches where we can relax almost in solitude.
Palm trees, golden or white sand, clear waters, perfect temperature. A dream holiday! Thanks to René
❤️ You guys are always welcome!
Rene and family were in our apartment for a short stay. Unfortunately we weren't able to meet in person, but I received some very nice pictures and a very positive message. The apartment was left tidy and we are looking forward to our visit to the Dominican Republic.
Rene, his mother and Judy were perfect hosts.
House in perfect order
Thank you for this beautiful exchange
Rene visited us with your family for a few days on your trip to Europe. They had treated our apartment with care and left it tidy.
Nice family who came for a short trip to Paris - everything went smoothly and they seemed to enjoy themselves! We are looking forward to coming to their place in the DR for the other part of our exchange, in the coming year. Rene and Family: you are also welcome back again in the future!
❤️ We would love that... with warmer weather 😉
We had a magical 4 night stay in the Zillertal (Ziller Valley)! The property is large, bright, with large balconies on both floors, spacious bathrooms and a lovely kitchen with an island. We were there during a heat advisory, but one gondola ride up the mountain and the air is fresh and cool! We needed to hike up mountains to burn off all the food! We ate so much Schnitzel and Kaiserschmarrn! Hannes had to host from afar but was very responsive and helpful. We look forward to their visit in the Dominican Republic! There were several grocery stores and restaurants right across the street...views were the highlight...and evening walks along the Ziller! Great visit, would happily visit again!
Small well- appointed apartment in quiet neighborhood with quick access by tram to all Florence sights! Best grocery store is also right there! ❤️Coop! 😉. Fulvio was so helpful and available to assist me with finding a store that sells orthopedic boots for a sprained ankle ( day 1 😵💫) Once properly outfitted, I was able to lead my mom and her friend on all our Tuscan adventures! They fell in love with Florence as I had years ago! I would gladly swap again!
Timila and Tim had a crash course in Island living, when for some unknown reason the electrical company decided to cut one phase of our power during their two week stay. They got a crash course in our back up power system :-(
All the neighbors and friends in the area loved meeting them and they seemed to enjoy the laid-back life style Cabrera offers. I hope in spite of the power issues they had a relaxing time and discovering the natural beauty this area has to offer! They are welcome back any time!
Super tidy well appointed apartment close to Munich's beautiful green space that runs along the Isar river. We had less than optimal weather during our quick stay, but Munich has awesome public transportation! Rafael was super communicative and responsive to questions.
Had a brief stay in Hannah snd Cedric's authentic district 17 Paris apartment ( strikes aside 😉 ) They very generously vacated their home to accomodate us for a chilly three days. We took in the sites and had sun if not warmth for most of our sightseeing. They were lovely to communicate with through the whole process.
Fulvio and Laura were busy busy and we were so happy that they could utilize our little Casita in the hills above Cabrera, Dominican Republic, for their base of operations visiting various parts of this lovely Caribbean nation. I felt bad that I wasn't able to arrange a better care package for them, but, alas I was stuck in Michigan and didn't manage to do it! We look forward to our stay in Florence next year! Thanks again to Fulvio and Laura for being wonderful guests... house was spotless!

We are an international, well-traveled couple in the pre-empty nester years. Youngest child is in high school. We are looking forward to more travel to new destinations in the coming years. We were members of a different home exchange platform and enjoyed meeting like-minded families from other countries (mostly Europe). PLU seems to fit our desire to meet like-minded culturally curious people. The FB group is awesome!
