We own a semi-rural property in one of the loveliest parts of New Zealand. The popular beachside areas of Mount Maunganui & Papamoa are only a 10 minute drive from our place and the beaches are spectacular plus there are many lovely restaurants and plenty of places to shop - this region is a tourist hot spot for both locals and international visitors in the summer months.
Tauranga is a 15 - 20 minute drive from our place and this region is the perfect gateway to many of the most popular places for tourists to visit (Auckland, Rotorua, Taupo & the Central Plateau and the Coromandel).
We are 40 minutes drive from Rotorua with its thermal pools, geysers and world class mountain bike trails, 50 minutes from “Hobbiton” which will appeal to fans of “Lord of the Rings” and 3 hours from Auckland. If you are interested in scuba diving there are some fantastic dive sites, particularly out at Mayor Island and if keen on golf there are plenty of golf courses as well. The scenery photos on our listing depict places located within 1 hours drive from our home, most are taken within a 20 minute drive. The largest shopping centre in the region, 3 supermarkets, public library and a gym are all just a 10 minute drive away, along with pristine swimming, fishing and surfing beaches.
About us -
We are early retirees with grown up children who have flown the nest so we now have plenty of time on our hands to enjoy seeing more of the world.
I’ve been involved in the travel industry for the past 30 years and Richard is a manufacturing jeweller by trade and also makes bespoke furniture.
We love to explore new destinations and experience new cultures. We are extremely house proud and can assure you that your home will be treated with care and respect.
We are non smokers and would not want guests to smoke inside our home.
We look forward to hearing from you…
The space
Our single level home has an open plan kitchen, dining and lounge with large bifold doors opening out on a large deck. With fabulous indoor / outdoor flow and spacious landscaped grounds featuring an outdoor fireplace.
It is spacious at 240 m2 with 3 bedrooms, (all with queen beds) 2 bathrooms, large deck and an outdoor fireplace.
We have Wifi over cellular as fibre not available in our location so it is unfortunately not unlimited speed / downloading.
We are interested in swaps of a minimum of 1 week up to 2/3 months and keen on summer and also winter destinations if there is a ski area nearby.
This is our primary residence but we can do non simultaneous swaps if required.
Guest access
You must be able to manage a few steps to access the house. This is our primary home so storage is limited but we will ensure we leave ample space in wardrobes for guests.
Notes
We are semi-rural so no public transport available and house swappers will need a vehicle.
We are ideally looking for longer exchanges - 1 weeks to 2/3 months. We are keen to spend time in Italy, France, Scandinavia, Canada & USA and are keen skiers so winter escapes if within 30 minutes drive of a ski area are also of interest.
We are new to PLU but have done home swaps before and love the opportunity it provides to “live like a local” in the destination visited. We are seasoned, confident travellers and can't wait to discover more of what this wonderful world has to offer!

Neighbourhood
Our home is surrounded by farmland to the rear of the property along with avocado and kiwifruit orchards on either side
Situated in the sunny eastern coast of New Zealand's North Island, the Bay of Plenty really is just that, offering golden sand beaches, bush clad mountains, lush farmlands and it’s pleasant climate means that the area has become a favourite for holiday makers and retirees.
It’s a great destination for those that love sports and the outdoors and want to make the most of the recreational facilities that abound on their doorstep such as boating, surfing, fishing, diving, mountain biking and hiking.
And don't forget about the vibrant food and entertainment focus with cafes, live music pubs, cinemas and live theatres.
Getting to my home
Must have a car as no public transport servicing our home. We may consider making our VW Tiguan available to potential exchangers subject to insurers approval.
Nearest airport
Tauranga Airport is a 10-15 minute drive from our home. Nearest international airport is Auckland which is a 2 1/2 hour drive or 45 minute flight from Tauranga.
Getting around
You will need to have a car as public transport is not available.

Happy to meet up for coffee or glass of wine if you are visiting our region. We can offer advice on local activities, e.g. walks, good swimming spots, bike trails, fishing & diving as well as some great coffee shops and restaurants. You would also be most welcome to call in for a coffee, tea, beer or whatever we have to share. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch!
New Zealanders (or “kiwis” as we like to call ourselves) are down to earth and friendly, and a smile goes a long way. Don't be afraid to ask for directions and recommendations from people you meet, whether it's where to get a decent latte or suggesting somewhere with a good atmosphere for dinner. Also
Don’t forget that New Zealand uses the metric system, distances will be given in kilometers rather than miles (likewise, the weather is measured in degrees Celsius rather than Fahrenheit).

We're fortunate to have travelled extensively and in the past have hosted many guests at a seperate property we owned and ran as an AirBnb. We've received excellent reviews and gained “superhost” status so rest assured we will take good care of your property as if it were our own.
We love "living like locals" and meeting new people on our travels. It gives us a much better understanding & appreciation of the location we are visiting. We have grown up children who have all left home and as we are no longer working we have the time and the inclination to explore more of the world.
We have completed home exchanges within New Zealand and love the opportunity this gives us to explore a destination like a “local” but now that we have more time on our hands we are keen to head further afield. We are pet lovers and happy to look after your pets and have owned cats, dogs, sheep and horses in the past. However for the past 4 years our home has been pet free so we can travel whenever we like.
Richard is a manufacturing jeweller by trade and has also owned a furniture making business. I've had a 30 year career in the travel industry, owning my own business and have been lucky to visit more than 70 countries. More recently I’ve been working part-time as a tour leader both in New Zealand and internationally. We like to 'experience' life in other destinations by staying in one place for at least a 1 or 2 weeks and are also keen to explore the option of longer stays of up to 2-3 months. France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Scandinavia, Canada and the USA are all on our wish list but feel free to surprise us with your suggestions.
We will look after your home as if it was our own and will leave it spotlessly clean - We expect that you will take the same care with our home. (As we are new to PLU I have included some reviews from our hosts when we have been staying at Airbnb's - these are included with the photos of our home and region)
