Neighbourhood
Our street is a traditional suburban residential street with a mix of Victorian terrace houses and newer houses. But within 5 minutes walk you will be on the high street, with a good selection of shops and restaurants.
The Lonely Planet named Tooting as one of the 10 coolest neighbourhoods on earth (https://www.standard.co.uk/news/london/tooting-named-one-of-the-10-coolest-neighbourhoods-on-earth-by-lonely-planet-a3618861.html), saying that "Tooting in South London has developed into an uber-cool neighborhood in recent years and lost none of its gritty charm in the process. Rubbing shoulders with perfectly pleasant yet slightly square Wimbledon, Earlsfield and Balham, Tooting is a more captivating affair, reveling in multiculturalism and originality. Its high street, which stretches between two Tube stations, is one of the best ‘curry corridors’ in the country, and contains some superb South Asian restaurants (...). The best shopping can be found inside eclectic Tooting Market, and quirky bars and pubs include The Castle and The Antelope. The Tooting Commons create over 200 acres of green space between them, and are home to Tooting Bec Lido – the largest swimming pool in the United Kingdom." (https://www.lonelyplanet.com/articles/best-secret-neighborhoods-of-the-world).
We agree with this description (well, it's our home, right?). There are many great restaurants and food shops, but no fancy boutiques. It is a very safe and friendly neighbourhood, and people on our street know and look out for each other.
If you like swimming, the Tooting Lido outdoor pool has just been renovated. It was hailed as one of the 12 most beautiful pools in the world - see https://myswimpro.com/blog/2020/08/07/the-12-most-beautiful-pools-in-the-world/. It is a 20 min walk or 5 min cycle ride away from our place on the edge of Tooting Common, a large park with tennis courts, playing fields, a pond and lots of trees. There is another smaller park near our house, less than 10 min walk, with an outdoor gym. If you are into cycling, it's a pleasant 30 minute cycle ride to Richmond Park, via Wimbledon Common. The Thames path (you can walk all the way to Oxford and beyond along it - but that would take you about a week) is also not far.
For those wanting to get out of London altogether, there are trains to Surrey (from Wimbledon), with endless possibilities for day trips - for example along the North Downs Way (https://www.nationaltrail.co.uk/en_GB/trails/north-downs-way/).
Nearest airport
All London airports (Heathrow, Gatwick, Stanstead, Luton, London city) are within about 1 1/2 hours away by public transport (train and underground/ metro). At off-peak times, a taxi can make it in less than an hour, but most of the time it takes nearly as long as the train / underground.
Getting around
You can find everything you may need on a daily basis within a short walk from our house - plenty of grocery shops, from supermarkets to specialty shops (including Polish, Indian, Turkish, West Indian foods etc.), green grocers, butchers, fishmongers). There is a huge range of restaurants, coffee shops, tapas bars / cocktail bars and street food stalls within 15 minutes walk.
We are 5 minutes walk from Tooting mainline ("overground") rail station, which takes you into Central London (South Bank of the Thames / Tate Modern, St Pancras International and Regent canal, Camden Town) in half an hour. Tooting Broadway Underground station is 10 minutes walk, with Northern Line metro services to Waterloo Station, the West End and the City. The Northern Line also runs a night service, in case you are out clubbing into the early hours of the morning...
Wimbledon village is 5 minutes away on the train in the opposite direction (train station is 5 minutes walk from the house), with a wide range of shops, theatres and cinemas - and of course the tennis tournament!
You can also take a bus (including a night bus) into central London (Victoria station, Waterloo station) from the end of our road, but it does take anything from an hour to two hours because of the traffic.

Happy to meet up for a drink and show people the neighbourhood.
Barbara and Tony's home is a very comfortable oasis in South London. Every room is well appointed, indeed luxurious. The kitchen is complete with every necessary appliance. The garden is incredible and inviting. A great place to come home to after a day spent in the heart of the city, an easy train ride away. Tooting itself is an interestingLondon neighborhood, with abundant shops, restaurants, and community life going on. Highly recommended!
Tony and Barbara’s home in Tooting is in a perfect location for visiting London. Just a few blocks from the busy main road yet quiet and peaceful. The kitchen/family room is where we spend our little time at home. It was perfect and comfortable with a gorgeous view of the garden, flowers and trees. Barbara was a joy to communicate with. She was always available to message on What’s App. Our only disappointment was their return flight was late so we didn’t get a chance to meet in person. I highly recommend this lovely home for a visit to London.
We enjoyed our stay in Barbara and Tony’s home very much. It was a convenient location to visit London and surrounding areas. Their communication and written home guide was excellent. We especially enjoyed relaxing on their deck with a view of the garden. It was a comfortable place to be, in a safe neighborhood. We highly recommend Barbara and Tony’s home to anyone visiting the UK.
As ever a total pleasure to stay at Barbara and Tony's place in London! 100% recommend!
We had a very good stay in Barbara and Tony's pretty house. Everything was perfect: Barbara and Tony thought of everything to make our stay easy and pleasant with very good advice on transport, restaurants, things to do... they were very available and responsive to answer our questions. The house itself is comfortable and bright with a beautiful little garden. It is well located in Tooting, close to everything but in a quiet area. In addition to our escapades in central London we enjoyed Tooting with its small town, friendly and cosmopolitan atmosphere. Thank you Barbara and Tony for making this stay possible and so enjoyable! And we hope to see you next time, perhaps for a reciprocal exchange 😊
We spent a week in Barbara’s and Tony’s lovely house and had a great time. The house itself is very comfortable and the garden (and squirrels!) are delightful. The guide to the house was very useful and well done and communication with Barbara and Tony was very easy. Central London is easy to access either via the tube (10-15 min walk) or railway services (5 min). Tooting is a vibrant place with lots of restaurants and supermarkets.
Barbara and Tony’s home is most comfortable. It’s a quiet, private space removed from the bustle and noise of London.
The kitchen / diner has lots of natural light. There is seating outside and a well kept garden.
Parking outside the door is chargeable during the day. We parked our car elsewhere once we had unloaded.
Access to London is via Tooting Broadway (Northern Line). It is less than a 15 minute walk away and from there the Underground goes straight to central London.
We did several journeys by bicycle. There are lots of cycleways across to Wimbledon / Richmond as well as the Wandle Way (north) and Morden Park (south).
I have just spent one week in Barbara and Tony's stunning house in London; it has every modern convenience possible plus a charming garden for sitting outside on a nice sunny day, it is impeccably clean and well-organised.
Communication with Barbara was extrememly easy and fluid both before and during the exchange.
I would return to this wonderful London home anytime Barbara and Tony wish to to come back to Paris.
Padraig.
P.S. Barbara and Tony experienced a pretty major problem while in my place. My water boiler decided to break down and leak water out on to the floor. By the time I reacted to their messages on my phone they had already found the water mains and turned it off. They mopped up the little flood in the entrace hall, they cleared out all my clothes and shoes from the cupboard and put them out to dry on the balcony, they even went to neighbours' apartments to check that everything was ok there too (fortunately Barbara speaks fluent French). They were extremely resourceful in dealing with the problem, and when I returned two days later they had left my place extremely clean and well-ordered given the awful circumstances they had had to deal with. I'm not sure every exchnager would have reacted with such calm and composure. And despite having to deal with all this and having no hot water for their last two days they were incredibly gracious and charming throughout and kept reassuring me that they were still having a nice time.
I'll always be very grateful to them for this.
We are just back from a lovely 11 day stay at Barbara and Tony's beautiful Tooting home. They were super easy to check in with ahead of the swap - providing lots of useful and practical info (including guides to the local area) so we could get organised ahead of time. Their home is a great base from which to explore all the delights of London (15 mins walk from the Northern Line, 5 mins walk from nearest rail station) and with restaurants nearby (lebanese, spanish, korean ....) we had entertainment on our doorstep as well as in the city!
We would highly recommend Barbara and Tony's fantastic home as a swap - it was super comfortable and very well equipped, and had a beautiful garden (a real luxury in London) which, despite it being the end of October, still proved to be a suntrap. Time off from going out and about in busy London was always a real pleasure given the house quickly felt like a second home; a few nights we stayed in, with the added delight of a real fire we felt very spoiled.
Huge thanks to you both for another fantastic PLU exchange!!!
We spent a wonderful week in London as part of a simultaneous exchange with Barbara and Tony.
Barbara and Tony’s house is in tooting, London. The house is very comfortable and well furnished. Barbara was super helpful and very accommodating. She left very clear and helpful instructions in her manual for the house and was always available to answer our questions. Both tony and Barbara are very kind and lovely people.
The area they live in is well connected to the rest of London - they live close to a Northern line tube station and also have a overground train station close by. So, getting around town is was super easy. Tooting itself is diverse and vibrant. Everything you might need (from gyms to supermarkets) is a short walk away and there are several parks nearby. There are some great restaurants in the area - so, make sure you try them out!
We had an excellent time at Barbara and Tony’s place and are very happy to recommend their place to anyone who is interested in visiting London m.
Barbara and Tony communicated thoroughly throughout the exchange process. Thus there was nothing to worry about, either as to what their needs may have been, or what ours were. Another exchange took place immediately after theirs- we were not there ourselves- and the comment was that the place was found clean and inviting. Given the thoughtfulness we had witnessed during the exchange with Barbara and Tony, this was no surprise. We highly recommend them as exchange partners!
Hosting Barbara and Tony was a wonderful experience. They were excellent guests—friendly, great communicators, and treated my home with care and respect. I’m happy they enjoyed their time in Nice and would highly recommend hosting them if you have the opportunity!
A real shame we didn't get to meet Tony and Barbara. Maybe another time.
Communications before exchange were excellent.
We returned to our home shortly after they left. We found it absolutely spotless. Linen was all left in our laundry room. Plants look very happy too.
We wouldn't hesitate sharing our home with you guys again.
Eileen and John
Thanks Barbara and Tony for being the perfect guests. Appreciate your care of my place. So happy I got to meet you and connect with more members of the PLU community.
Barbara and Tony left the house in perfect condition and everything went well.
Tony and Barbara are excellent home exchangers. Great communication, careful, considerate and a pleasure to have in our home.

I would return to this wonderful London home anytime Barbara and Tony wish to to come back to Paris.
Barbara and Tony were wonderful guests and it was real shame we didn't get to meet. They left our house clean and tidy plus a lovely bottle of wine and actually a prepared meal that they hadn't had time to eat before their departure! Thank you!
It was a pleasure to communicate with Barbara prior to and during the exchange.
If you do return to NZ, please do reach out as we'd be more than happy to welcome you again.
Barbara and Tony were fantastic house swappers to exchange with!
We had a couple of zoom calls ahead of finalising the swap and felt confident from the outset that they would look after our home. We were right! We communicated during the trip via Wha's App and having Barbara and Tony's local insights was really useful given we don't know London that well. They even recommended a local gig which was a great way to finish off our trip on the last night.
We came back to a neat and tidy home - after a fantastic, hassle free London trip.
We would be very happy to exchange again - thank you Barbara and Tony and thank you PLU!
Barbara and Tony are very friendly and easy going guests. They always communicated with us openly and took good care of our place. They watered our plants regularly and were very respectful of our wishes. We would happily recommend them as guests.
Gay and Larry were perfect guests and left the place spotless! They also left us some lovely flowers which was very nice to come home to. We would definitely recommend Gay and Larry as house guests!
We stayed for almost a week at Gay and Larry’s place in PSS. Instructions for finding it were clear and their neighbour was on hand to help us. The place was clean and tidy with a balcony overlooking the port and only ten minutes walk from shops and restaurants.
PSS is a lovely place with plenty of restaurants and nearby beaches. We hired ebikes at nearby Orbitello and visited some lovely places.
Gay and Larry were very helpful before and during our stay and replied very quickly to our questions. We can definitely recommend it as a great place to stay.”
We spent a wonderful week in Anne's appartment. It's super central - a couple of minutes walk to the coastal esplanade, right in the centre of the old city, and very close to tramway and bus stops. Amazingly, the place is still very quiet, as the appartment faces the rear of the building- we slept with the window open.
The appartment is very small, but had everything we needed. It was great to have such a central base from where to explore Nice and other parts of the Côte d'Azur.
Anne was very helpful, leaving clear instructions and many useful tips on things to do nearby. Thanks a lot for hosting us!
We loved staying in Eileen's and John's house in Calonge! The house is well equipped, comfortable and tidy, and on a very quiet street. Calonge is a lovely village with several shops and restaurants, and located amidst vineyards and forested hills that are ideal for walks and cycle rides. There are many nice beaches within easy reach. Communication with John and Eileen was great throughout, and the many tips and suggestions for things to do in the area were really useful. Thanks for letting us stay in your place!
Thank you
Karen and Gail were wonderful guests, who looked after our plants and left our home neat and clean. Communication was great throughout and we discovered a number of shared interests. We would gladly host them again, or organise a reciprocal exchange.
We spent a wonderful week in Laura's flat in Malaga - it's the perfect base for exploring this beautiful city. The flat is small, but has everything one might need. The windows open to a little courtyard, which makes it cool and generally quiet. The little roof terrace is lovely - the ideal place for an aperitif, before exploring the many tapas bars and restaurants in the area. Thanks a lot for letting us stay, Laura!
Susan and Ted were clearly experienced home exchangers, with great communication throughout. They looked very well after our home, including looking after our plants and preparing things for the next guests. We would gladly host them again, or perhaps organize a reciprocal exchange.
Great guests once again - aleays welcome again in our place!
Melanie and Johann stayed for a long weekend in our house. They were the perfect guests, communicating clearly and leaving the house in an impeccable state. They even changed the bedsheets for us, which I appreciated when I got back home late in the evening! We would certainly host them again, perhaps next time for a reciprocal exchange.
Thank you very much for your welcome and with pleasure for a reciprocal exchange 🤗
Armelle and Alain were great guests and left our house clean and tidy. They watered our plants (including the ones in the greenhouse), which otherwise would not have survived. They were also very responsive and replied to any queries straight away. We would certainly welcome them again to our home.
We loved Arradon! Spending 10 days in Armelle’s and Alain’s house on the Gulf of Morbihan was very relaxing and a perfect holiday. Our hosts provided a lot of information about things to do in the area, which was very useful. The house is very cosy and quiet, with lots of light and a nice garden. It is well equipped with everything one might need.
We really liked the location, only a few minutes’ walk from the village centre of Arradon (with several nice restaurants, bars, bakeries, and a small grocery shop). We particularly enjoyed the live music on the village square on Wednesdays, with many people, young and old, dancing together. There is a major supermarket about 10 min walk in the other direction, and Vannes is only a 20 min bus ride away. There are several beaches in walking distance from the house, and the whole area is great for walking and cycling (there is a great bike hire shop in the village, from where we hired electric bikes for a week at a reasonable rate). The islands in the Gulf are easy to reach by boat and there are many quiet beaches, even during the holiday period. Vannes is an interesting historic town with lots of activities during the summer months. We would gladly come here again to explore the area further.
Gisela and Andrew were great guests and clearly experienced home exxchangers. They left our home tidy and clean, and kindly watered our plants. They always responded quickly to any queries. We would certainly exchange with them again.
We spent a wonderful week in Gisela's and Andrew's home - a nice break from the London crowds! The house is large and very well designed, with lots of light and excellent insulation. And the views across the Frome River Valley are beautiful! We also enjoyed the "cinema room" and the well equipped kitchen. The house was very clean and tidy.
Gisela and Andrew were great hosts and provided useful suggestions for walks, cycle rides and things to explore in the area. There is lots to do and we hope to come back some time to see more.
Padraig is provably the most organised person i have met via PLU! He was a great guest, and, other than finding a bottle of wine on our table, it was difficult to see that someone else had stayed in our house for a week. And he watered all my seedlings in the kitchen, which are now ready to be planted in the garden! Thanks a lot, Padraig 😀
We spent a wonderful week in Paris, benefiting from the comfort of Padraig's little place in Courbevoie. It is well equipped with all the essentials, and it's really easy to get to pretty much any part of Paris by train and metro. There are some nice restaurants in walking distance from the flat, and a bakery (for fresh croissants and bread all day long) just around the corner.
Padraig is clearly an experienced home exchanger and communicated well with us throughout, providing some useful advice about the neighbourhood, things to do in Paris and how to get around. Thanks a lot, Padraig!
We spent a wonderful week in Carey's and Peter's home in Algies Bay. It was the perfect closure of our New Zealand trip, with lots of activities available in the area (swimming, snorkelling, hiking, kayaking, wine tasting....) without the need to drive far. The house is in a quiet cul-de-sac and well equipped with everything we needed - including canoes! We enjoyed watching the tuis (birds) at the feeder and sitting on the deck with a view of the bush.
Carey was a great host and communicated regularly, including useful tips about things to do. We would come back any time!
Catherine and James were very kind and accommodating, and clearly very experienced home exchangers! We had a couple of zoom calls beforehand and we communicated regularly by WhatsApp before and during our stay. Catherine and James were always very helpful and quick to respond to any queries, and although we have never met in person they feel like old friends! They looked very well after our house, leaving it clean and tidy – we hardly noticed someone else had been staying! We would certainly exchange with them again.
We had a wonderful time in Catherine and James’ house in Edinburgh. They live right on the foot of the Pentland hills, in a quiet residential area, giving us the best of both worlds – easy access to a huge area for hiking, literally 5min walk away, and easy access to the city centre by bus or bicycle. Their house was spacious, very tidy and had everything we needed, as well as a nice garden. There are a couple of pubs in walking distance (in Colinton village), and one can actually walk into Edinburgh centre from there along the Water of Leith (beautiful little stream flowing through a narrow valley) although one should allow a couple of hours at least.
This is a great place from where to explore Edinburgh, in particular if you like walking / running / cycling and don’t want to be right in the city centre. We hope to exchange with them again in the future, as we love Edinburgh and always find something new to explore there.
This was our first ever simultaneous home exchange, and it worked out so well! Ram and Anna are lovely people and we communicated well throughout the whole process. They were very helpful and responsive, always getting back to us quickly.
Their house is spacious and comfortable, and we enjoyed in particular the patio area and the tranquility of their neighbourhood. They live west of the old town, in a leafy residential area close to the Seepark (great beer garden!), within easy walking distance of tram and train stops that take you to the old town in 15 minutes. We used their bicycles a lot – Freiburg is a cyclist’s dream! You can get by bicycle anywhere in the city on either designated cycle routes (often completely separate from roads) or on quiet residential streets. Freiburg is a lovely city that has a lot to offer in its own right – a beautiful old town centre with a famous cathedral, plenty of restaurants and pubs, and several ‘bathing lakes’. But it’s also the “gateway” to the Blackforest, with frequent trains to Titisee and other villages / trailheads for cycle or walking tours. We could have easily spent much longer here, doing day trips into the hills and forests. We chose Freiburg mostly because my goddaughter lives here and we wanted to spend time with her, but we liked it so much that we would love to come again some time! Barbara and Tony from London, August 2022.
Ram and Anna were wonderful guests and left the house in an impeccable state. And they watered our plants - not a mean feat during the hottest summer on record! We would definitely host them again.
