General overview

Enjoy our 1907 colonial farmhouse in a lovely quiet, friendly suburb near Chicago (guests can get to Chicago in less than 30 minutes by car or 40 by commuter train). Metra train, award winning pool, hiking/biking trails, and parks are all within an easy walk. Once a farming town, Lombard is now a vibrant community close to downtown Chicago. The city comes alive in spring with Lilac Time, a festival of spring flowers that culminates in a parade. Other yearly events include the Fourth of July fireworks celebration, a free summer concert series, weekly summer downtown events and a winter festival. Lombard's numerous public parks and trails bring neighbors together, creating a rich community spirit. Lombard's burgeoning downtown has many excellent restaurants, cafes, parks, shops, and a library. All of these amenities are an easy walk from our home. Our home is a short distance from Great America amusement park, Raging Waves water park, less crowded family friendly Lake Michigan beaches, huge outlet malls, and gorgeous hiking at Starved Rock State Park (1.5 hours away). The Illinois Prairie Path - a beautiful 61-mile hiking and biking trail system (see pictures) - is steps away. And so much more - we are happy to provide kid-recommended favorite places to visit in the area. Enjoy all that Chicago offers in a large, comfortable 4 bedroom home with kid-friendly backyard. Visitors always comment how peaceful and beautiful our home and neighborhood is!

The space

Our home is tall with 3 floors and a basement. The first floor has a living room with attached music room, dining room, newly remodeled kitchen, breakfast nook, and full bathroom. The second floor has 4 bedrooms plus an office. Master bedroom has queen bed, Guest room has 2 twin beds, Kids room has bunk beds, Extra bedroom has a king bed. Office with desk/chair is off the guest bedroom. The third floor has a play room for kids with toys, video games, tv, and more. Our backyard has a trampoline and kids play set, and a cozy outdoor sitting area.

Our neighborhood is very friendly, quiet, and extremely safe. You will often see people walking their pets or strolling to the park with their kids. The award-winning Lombard Commons public pool is within walking distance, as are many beautiful parks (including nationally recognized Lilacia Park).

Getting around

Downtown Lombard is an easy 10 minute walk, as is the Metra (train) station. Will be helpful to have a car for getting groceries but not 100% necessary.

Member description
My husband and I are avid readers and foodies who love to travel and learn about our world. Kathy is a software engineer at a University and Jerry is a network engineer at the local library. We have 2 respectful, well behaved children - Henry and Milo. We joined the home exchange community several years ago and have loved every exchange so far (Colorado, San Francisco, Maine and Acadia National Park, Quebec, and coming up Austin TX and Germany). We have made friends thru home exchange and have enjoyed meeting a few families who traveled to Chicago on a different exchange. Our large home is perfect for anyone wanting to visit Chicago and the nearby attractions. We are open to traveling anywhere and meeting new people thru this network. Our current "bucket list" destinations include Norway and/or Sweden, Greece, Central America, and anywhere in the U.S. We have a 3-week exchange this summer (2020) to Germany and therefore cannot accommodate anything but a short weekend exchange this summer.
