Neighbourhood
Coyotes, deer, rabbits, squirrels and lots of birds. Also, occasional bears and bobcats, so small pets should not be left to wander the forest alone.
The entire property is fenced in and we have our own private, 1.3 mile hiking trail which will take your breath away.
Nearest airport
Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ). 30 minutes away.
Getting around
You will need a car to get around as public transportation is not an option here. For simultaneous exchanges we would consider a car swap with our Subaru Forester. Otherwise, rental cars tend to be much more reasonable than in other places.
We are just 15 minutes away from the nearest town which has basic necessities (but not much else). There you will find a grocery store, a Walmart and a few local restaurants. These are mix of fast food (Starbucks, Subway, McDonalds, Dairy Queen, Sonic) and sit-down options (New Mexican food, pizza, Denny's). Nothing is delivered up here (so, no Uber eats, etc.).
Generally, for restaurants and entertainment we prefer to drive the extra 15 minutes to get to Albuquerque. There you will find lots of world-class restaurants, great theater and other options.
If you are more of the adventurous type, you will love our private, 1.3 mile hiking trail where you will see tracks (and scat!) from the forest critters all the time. There are also plenty of hiking trails in the surrounding area.

If the highest grade for an exchange was 10, I would give this exchange an 11. Rosa Linda was the easiest to communicate with and she went above and beyond to make sure all was great for us (that includes knowing if my kids were boys or girls in order to match with sheets they would love the most). Her family was super welcoming too and our kids even played together for a while when we arrived. The house itself was amazing. Very quiet, yet close to Santa Fe and Albuquerque. We had a fire outside, some snow to enjoy, there was a pool that we ended up not using but seemed great. Her room (the room I stayed at) has a marvelous sunrise view and a massage chair that is absolutely amazing (if you love massages). We kept her dog to the time we were there and Nala was the most well behaved dog I have ever seen. Our kids were afraid of dogs and finished the exchange loving her very much. We couldn't be happier that we managed not just to have a great exchange, but also to become friends. Thank you!
Oh my goodness… where do I start? First of all Rosa Linda was very gracious to agree to a non sim exchange, knowing that she wouldn’t be staying at our home anytime soon. We had never been to New Mexico (possibly through it when we were kids). We had the opportunity to stay at this lovely home 4 nights and we didn’t even leave the house for the first 2 days because it was so peaceful. It was only 2 of us and our little dog so way more house than we actually needed- but it was like a mini retreat. The family home is on 70 acres and we hiked their private hiking trail a couple of times. The master bedroom has views to die for. We woke up to the most spectacular sunrises every morning. The master bed was soooo comfortable, I'm not sure when was the last time I slept that well.
I would highly recommend this home to large families with kids because there is a lot to do. Ninja course, small pool, hiking, fire pit (think private family retreat center).
I would also highly recommend it for smaller groups who may be looking for a quiet place to rest, relax or like Rosa Linda, work on your next novel.
We are very thankful she said yes and would definitely recommend an exchange with her. It would be worth it for a globe for sure.
Our family had the pleasure of participating in our first home exchange with Rosa Linda's family in Tijeras, New Mexico, and it was an unforgettable experience. They stayed nearby with friends while we stayed at their house. The house was comfortable and well-maintained and provided the perfect base for exploring the surrounding area.
On our first day, we ventured into Albuquerque, where we discovered a vibrant city filled with fascinating museums, delicious local cuisine, and a charming Old Town district. The city's unique blend of Native American, Spanish, and American influences was evident in its architecture, art, and culture.
The second day took us to the enchanting city of Santa Fe, known for its thriving art scene, historic adobe buildings, and stunning Spanish Colonial architecture. We spent hours wandering through the city's numerous art galleries, boutiques, and museums, soaking in the creative atmosphere.
The highlight of our trip was a 1.5-hour drive into the nearby mountains. The journey was breathtaking, as we witnessed the landscape transform from the desert to lush forests and finally to snow-capped peaks. It was incredible to experience all four seasons within such a short distance, a testament to the diverse beauty of New Mexico.
Rosa Linda's house in Tijeras served as a welcoming and comfortable retreat throughout our stay. The home was well-equipped with all the necessary amenities, and its location provided a peaceful respite from the hustle and bustle of the cities we visited.
What made our experience truly exceptional was the warmth and hospitality of Rosa Linda, her husband, and their children. Our two small kids instantly fell in love with their teenage kids, who were kind, patient, and engaging. Rosa Linda and her family were always available to answer our questions.
On our first day, we arrived to find ourselves snowed in, which was our children's first experience with real snow. Rosa Linda and her family went above and beyond to ensure we were comfortable and well-fed, sharing their food with us and making us feel right at home.
We are incredibly grateful to her and her wonderful family for making this home exchange possible and allowing us to experience the wonders of New Mexico in such a unique and memorable way. Their kindness and generosity touched our hearts, and we feel that we have made lifelong friends. We highly recommend this home exchange to anyone looking for a fantastic base to explore the Land of Enchantment and connect with an amazing family.
It was an absolute pleasure to host Rosa Linda and her family. I think my daughter wanted them to leave their daughter behind, she totally fell in love with her!
Nathan is a great cook and cooked us a delicious meal as a thank you.
They were all fun, friendly, gracious and kind and left the room immaculate.
Rosa Linda and her lovely family were the perfect guests at our home. They respected our home and left it super clean.
As we had just gone up the road to allow them to stay they also invited us for dinner at our house and we had a lovely evening making new friends for life ❤️
We unfortunately did not get to meet Rosa Linda and her family this time, since we were away when they visited our home, but we enjoyed great communication with her, before, during and after her stay. They were respectful of our home and cleaned it spotlessly when they left. We truly look forward to staying at their home in 2025 and would enthusiastically recommend them as exchange partners!
Michele and Larry
Wow! Maria and her family and friends went well above and beyond to make this exchange go so smoothly. I will admit that we were very nervous about having 4 adults and 8 kids at our house, but both families were so wonderful every step of the way and we would welcome them back in a heartbeat. We came home to a beautifully cleaned house and everything went off without a hitch. Even my son, who initially complained about this whole home exchange thing (he is 14, after all, and averse to change...) came away complimenting how nicely the families took care of the house (especially how the kids cared for his room and toys)!
The part that was really exceptional and saved us a world of headache is that Maria and company agreed to take care of our beloved dog, Nala, while we were gone. This, despite some very strong reluctance from a few of the kids (they ended up loving her!). Yes, we had a reservation at the kennel, but Nala had just traveled with us back from a boat in Spain and we hated to put her in a kennel so soon after we got her back to her happy place here in New Mexico. Maria and her family and friends took great care of Nala and the house allowing us to enjoy a fabulous, worry-free Thanksgiving with family. I would never hesitate to recommend Maria and her family and friends as excellent exchange partners.
I cannot say enough about Amanda's generous hospitality. After we put out a last-minute hospitality request to allow my daughter to tour universities throughout the UK, Amanda reached out to offer us her annex (which has a double bed and a loft bed). She also allowed my daughter to take over her daughter's room to give our family more sleeping options. We loved getting to know Amanda and her daughter. They made us feel like family. We hope to get the chance to host them in the near future.
Jane and her family truly went above and beyond for our family. We came through South Yorkshire while my daughter was touring universities throughout the UK. Not only did Jane and her family move out of their own home to be able to accommodate our whole family (they stayed at her father's home nearby) but they spent time with our family to make us feel so welcome. Jane took time out of her day to take us on a personal tour around Sheffield University and she and I went on a hike through a magical fairytale-looking forest. We shared a lovely meal with her family with our kids (and the grownups!) all becoming fast friends. I highly recommend Jane and Paul's home and hospitality to any families that wish to experience the best that the People Like Us platform has to offer.
We cannot say enough about Ange and Gary and their generous hospitality. Our daughter wanted to tour universities in the UK, starting in Glasgow. Angela Ward responded to our post and offered for us to stay at her home while we were in Scotland. It was the perfect landing place for us, not just because the home was lovely and comfortable, but because Ange and Gary were exceptional hosts. They cooked us meals, shared their time and wisdom and helped us all feel so welcome. Even our teenage son appreciated their company, which is saying a lot. The experience was 100% excellent for us all. Thank you so much for everything! We do hope you will come to New Mexico so we can return the favor someday!
What a delightful exchange experience all around! Regina and Dean came to our New Mexico home on an epic road trip across America. They treated our home with the utmost care and left it better than they found it. Regina was great at communicating every step of the way. We would definitely welcome them to our home again in the future.
Seriously AMAZING place and people! We arrived to Michele and Larry's lovely apartment worn from a long day of travel, a bit worried how everything would go since this was our first exchange. But we had absolutely no problems and found the apartment more beautiful than any of the photos could do justice to.
Sitting out on the balcony, watching the waves and feeling the sun on my face was definitely a highlight for me. My husband (the cook in our family) found the kitchen to be well stocked with whatever he needed. The beds were comfortable and quiet.
I made the mistake of forgetting to bring power adapters for our US-based electronics, but the apartment had some we were able to use which I really appreciated. We were worried about there not being a dryer, but we did two washes and it was absolutely not a problem. There was the added bonus of the clothes smelling so fresh from hanging out in the breeze.
As for our exchange partners, Michele and Larry were simply the best. Great communication and quick responses. Even with the 8 hour time difference I was able to get any questions answered. Plus, their very thorough house guide document that they sent us answered almost all of our questions easily.
Would we do another exchange with Michele and Larry? 100% yes!
We simply could not have asked for a better family to exchange with!
From the very beginning Rigien and her family communicated openly with our family, even listening to some of our concerns about having younger kids in our house (ours are now teenagers). We did several zoom calls to put our minds at ease and there never was a single issue.
We did a non-simultaneous exchange while my husband, daughter and I were in Spain, but two of our teenage kids were here in New Mexico, staying with friends. I was quite nervous about how this would go, since this was our very first exchange. (and our first time being so far away from our kids). But every step of the way Rigien and Jonathan made it so easy on us. They visited with my kids and communicated regularly, even sending adorable pictures of everyone having a great time. They also took excellent care of our beloved German Shepherd.
When we got back from Spain, the house was spotless. Plus, the family left us a delicious gift plus sweet notes from the whole family. So wonderful!
I 100% recommend Rigien, Jonathan and their kids for exchange partners. You won't regret it!

We are a worldschooling family with a home base in New Mexico, USA. In June 2024 we moved onto a catamaran to cruise the Mediterranean. We are currently back in the US for the holidays (Halloween - Hanukkah 2024) but expect to be back on the boat sometime after New Year's 2025.
We would love to set up some exchanges so that other PLU members can enjoy our peaceful, 75 acre sanctuary near Albuquerque and Santa Fe, New Mexico during the months we are on the boat.
We are a family of 5 but our oldest is now off to college, so our current travel party will generally be 4 of us: 2 teens and 2 adults.
We all love learning, especially through travel, and can't wait to meet new friends to discover more of what this wonderful world has to offer, while sharing our little slice of heaven here in New Mexico with others.
People Like Us is the world's most trusted home exchange community. We believe in sharing, trust, generosity, respect, communication, equality, cooperation, honesty, hospitality, friendship, flexibility and adventure.
