General overview

We moved into our perfect forever home in Nov 2019 and have loved getting to know its quirks. It was built in the 18th century and was originally three farmers cottages, it has since been made into one large cottage, modernised throughout and extended. We live on the edge of the rural village of Highclere where there are lots of country walks, including a 30 minute walk to the famous Highclere Castle (from Downton Abbey).

The space

The living area is spacious despite it being a cottage. You will find a large kitchen with a breakfast room attached, a very large living room with a sky light and bi-folding doors to the garden, a beautiful dinning room, a cosy snug with a fireplace and a bathroom. Upstairs are 4 double bedrooms and a bathroom, two with double beds and two with children's single cabins beds (with room for a extra mattress in each if needed). The master bedroom has an ensuite. We have two studies if you need to work remotely. Outside there are three separate seating areas to enjoy various parts of the garden, we also have a children's play area with swings and a hot tub. We will usually give access to our main house, however depending on needs we can allow use of the annex too. The annex is spacious with 1 large bedroom, en-suite, living area and kitchenette. The main house and annex share a joint utility room. The drive has room for 4 cars.

Guest access

Two floors and a set of stairs.

Notes

We will usually give access to our main house, however depending on needs we can allow use of the guest house too. We have a dog but will take him with us or he will stay with friends. We have a few chickens which look after themselves but would appreciate checking on them and topping up food/water every 3-4 days. You can of course help yourself to the eggs :-) We have some tropical fish which like to be fed once a day.

Neighbourhood

Newbury is placed well in the centre of southern England and has good transport links to the coast, London and Bath. It is easy to find by car. If not driving, you could get a train or bus to Newbury and then get a taxi to Highclere (10 mins drive from Newbury). If not driving then there is a bus stop a 2 minute walk from our house, alternatively a taxi can collect you. We are about 45 minutes away from Heathrow Airport. Supermarkets There is a Sainsburys Local 5 minutes from the house, turn left out of the drive and drive straight on for 5 mins. There is also a large Tesco, Sainburys and Waitrose in Newbury, all within 10 mins drive. There is a small convenience store and post office in Woolton Hill a few mins drive away. Things to do in and around Newbury • Newbury races a great day out if you happen to be visiting when races are planned. • Living Rainforest a lovely indoor rainforest with a sloth, free range tropical birds, play park and café. • In Newbury centre you can find a Vue cinema, High Score and Theatre. • Nearby towns nice to visit include Hungerford, Kintbury, Winchester. • London Paddington takes 40 minutes by train. • Highclere is in a great location for visiting the following all about 30 to 40 mins drive: o Paulton’s Park (+ Peppa Pig World) o Marwell zoo o Blenheim Palace o Longleat Newbury Town • Newbury is a market town and has all the usual high street shops, there is a canal that runs through it and a large children’s park (Victoria Park) off the centre where you can also feed the Swans and visit the Tea Shop by the Canal for cake/lunch. • Parking is all well sign posted, we usually use Parkway http://www.shopatparkway.com/home • The Newbury Retail Park has a Tesco, McDonalds, Marks and Spencer Food, Boots, Hobby Craft, Costa, Lidl, Pets at Home and TK Maxx (plus a few other shops). Eating out in and around Newbury • The Red House at Highclere is the local pub 1 min drive (10 min walk) they do good food and make stone baked pizzas for take away. • Good nearby pubs: The Red House at Marsh Benham, The Hartley Arms, The George and Dragon, The Swan and The Bunk Inn. • The Vineyard and the Woodspeen are very nice restaurants but need advance booking. • Typical chain restaurants are in Newbury. Take aways don’t deliver to Highclere I’m afraid. Walks • If you turn left out of our drive and walk along the verge past the three houses on the left you will come to a footpath on the left about 200 metres away (just before the small bridge). If you follow the footpath, it will lead you to Mount Road, from there you can go exploring through the village. Bring your wellies! Be careful walking along the verge as cars do drive fast along this road - I wouldn’t recommend walking along in the dark. • Greenham Common is great for walking and cycling, this is an old RAF base (was used during the filming of Star Wars, The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi), it has a control tower and a cafe www.greenhamtower.org.uk • Donnington Castle is a lovely 14th century ruin which the kids can climb on, it has great views over Newbury and just up the road from a great kids park with a wooden castle and a lovely pub: https://www.thehartleyarms.co.uk/ • Snelsmore Common has paths you can take scooters and bikes and there are also roaming ponies. • Highclere Castle, where Downton Abbey is filmed, is a short distance from the house which you can book to visit www.highclerecastle.co.uk. Alternatively there are walks around the grounds detailed on their website (https://www.highclerecastle.co.uk/where-can-i-walk). Additional information
