Neighbourhood

We live in Amsterdam Oost, very close to the city center. Our neighborhood is very popular with locals and it's right in the "knowledge mile" where universities are, so lots of (international) student life (you generally can’t hear it in our home though!). Oost is a lovely, lively and diverse area that pretty much has it all, but there are not too many tourist attractions aside from the Tropen Museum and Artis Zoo, which gives it a very local feeling. We are halfway between the best waterway in the city (Amstel) and Beukenplein, which is known for its restaurants and bars.

Nearest airport

Schiphol airport is a half hour train, 20 min drive. The train transfers to the metro, the stop next to us is ‘Wibautstraat’. Taxis and Ubers are expensive (around 40 euros) but sometimes the most practical depending on your luggage and mobility. If you use Uber, call after you get your bags and walk to the pickup point. They are often there in less than 10 min.

Getting around

As mentioned, getting around is very easy by public transport from our home. We have quite a central location so you are within 5 min walking from the edge of the city center. But of course, the best way to get around is by bike! Biking in Amsterdam is not for the faint of heart and takes some getting used to, since locals use this as their primary means of transport and are not always happy to have sightseeing tourists in the bike lanes. Keep to the right and stay alert and you’ll be fine :) We have bikes to lend if needed.
