The Meetup You Would Have Loved (And Never Heard About)

Every so often a member writes to us with a version of the same story. They were in Lisbon for three weeks on an exchange. There was a PLU Meetup in Lisbon while they were there. They found out about it a fortnight after they flew home.

It's a small thing that stings, because a Meetup is exactly the sort of thing you'd have gone out of your way for. A few members, a coffee or a long lunch, the particular ease of sitting down with people who've already decided that trusting strangers with their home is a reasonable way to live. You don't get that from a guidebook.

The problem was never that members didn't want to come. It's that nobody was telling them. Indeed, nobody knew to tell them!

What's changed

When a member creates a public Meetup, we now work out who it's actually relevant to, and let those people know.

There are two ways a Meetup can be relevant to you:

It's near your home. If the Meetup is happening within about 100 km of where you live, you'll hear about it. This is the one that quietly matters most: plenty of members have no idea how many other members live within an hour's drive. Turns out you have neighbours.

It's near where you'll be. If you have a confirmed exchange that puts you in the area on the date of the Meetup, you'll hear about it too. This is the Lisbon case. You're already going to be there, you just needed someone to mention it.

Either way, the notification arrives in your Feed bell and your inbox, with the details and a link straight to the Meetup so you can RSVP. The host sees who's coming, you get a plan, and nobody spends the evening wondering whether anyone will turn up.

Why we built it this way

We could have sent every Meetup to every member and let people sort it out themselves. We didn't, for the obvious reason: a notification you can't act on isn't information, it's noise, and enough of it teaches you to ignore the bell entirely.

So the rule is deliberately narrow: it has to be somewhere you can plausibly get to, on a date you're plausibly there. If a Meetup shows up in your notifications, going to it is a real option for you.

We also cap how many members any one Meetup notifies, and we keep a record of who's already been told, so the same event never notifies you twice. Members already travelling to the area get priority, because for them the window is genuinely narrow: they'll be gone next week.

And it only ever applies to public Meetups. If a Meetup is private, it stays private. Nothing about this change surfaces an event to people its host didn't intend to reach.

Your controls

It's on by default, because we think most members will want it, and the ones who don't should only have to say so once.

If that's you: Notification preferences → Meetups near you. You can turn off email, in-app, or both, and it takes effect immediately. Everything else in your preferences stays exactly as you set it.

A quiet ask
