A Week on the Cliffs: Our Stay at Terje and Anne-Helene's Cabin in Norway

We just got back from a week at Terje and Anne-Helene's beautiful cabin in the woods, perched on the cliffs by the ocean in Norway. It sounds kind of wild and enchanting when you describe it like that — and honestly, it was exactly that.

Getting There Was Part of the Adventure

Terje was there to greet us when we arrived and showed us the way to the cabin from where we'd parked the car. The walk itself was an experience in its own right — climbing down cliff stairs, passing through a tunnel of cliffs, and making our way through a bit of forest before finally reaching the stairs up to the cabin. When you get to the top, the view is absolutely breathtaking. The cabin is nestled into the side of the cliffs in a forested area, with a big terrace and amazing views all around.

The Little Things Make It Special

What made this place so special for me was all the little details that were so different from anything we'd experienced before. The walk in. The outdoor shower. The walk through the woods to "bathcliff" and the nearest little harbour. The endless trails winding through the forest, just waiting to be explored. Coming from a flat country like Denmark, the mountains and cliffs were spectacular.

Some of the little things I know I'll remember for a long time: laying out my travel yoga mat on the terrace every morning and working out with that view in front of me — not exactly hard to find the motivation for that. And picking berries as we wandered around the area, because they were genuinely everywhere.

We went to bed exhausted in the best possible way every night — I think we averaged at least 15,000 steps a day, mostly up and down hill. And we slept so well there, because it was so wonderfully quiet. It's actually something Terje mentioned when they stayed at our little cottage in Denmark — that the quietness and how well you sleep there reminded him of their cabin. Very different places, but that same sense of quiet and tranquillity.

A Host Who Made It Effortless

Terje was such a good host and made us feel very welcome, both before we arrived and the whole time we were there — always just a short message away. He gave us great advice on things to see and do, and pointed us toward the paths through the forest that led to the best viewpoints in the area. And those viewpoints — wow. So beautiful.

We could easily have just stayed in the area the whole week and hiked, but we also took a few day trips further afield, including a hike to Michael's Cave and a waterfall we got to swim in. Amazing experiences, all of it.

Wonderfully Remote — Know Before You Go

When I told Terje how much we'd adored the cabin, and joked that once I post about it in the Facebook group he'll probably be bombarded with people wanting to stay there, he made a fair point: a place this remote isn't for everyone.

This one's best suited to guests who are comfortable on their feet, with some stairs and uneven ground to navigate on the way in. It's also worth knowing the cabin sits close to the cliff edge, so it's a better fit for older children than toddlers — ours are 8 and 14, and they had an absolute ball with plenty of space to explore safely.

A Privilege to Be the First

I could go on forever about the wonders of this place, but honestly, words — and even photos — don't quite do it justice. I've included a few images here so you can get a small sense of it.

I have nothing but good things to say about this place, and about Terje and Anne-Helene. We feel very privileged to have been the very first PLU guests to stay in their beloved cabin for a week, and we genuinely can't wait to go back.
