Fruit U-pick in the summer: Strawberries, Cherries, Apricots, Peaches, Blueberries, Raspberries, Plums, Grapes, Apples, Pears (and Garlic - I know this is not fruit, but they are just delicious)... They are all available in the local farms or farmers markets.
Fruits and vegetables freshly picked are not the same as store brought.
We purchase our meat (chicken, beef and pork) directly from a local farmers - their farm is about 100 miles from my house (note to self, 200 lb of meat takes up a lot space in a freezer 😋).
We're lucky to be in the Okanagan where produce are abundant - last summer we got 20 kg of honey, 140 lb u-pick apricots, 100 lb u-pick apples, some backyard prunes/chestnuts and 1600 lb organic peaches (this one is with friends). Everything from local farmers within 10 miles from me.
With so many orchards and farms, the Okanagan is pretty great for "Farm to Table" - here's a Vancouver Magazine article about 8 such restaurants, 3 of which are within 5 mins from us (many many more in the area): http://vanmag.com/taste/kelownas-8-farm-table-restaurants/

Although our house is in walking distance (within 20 mins) to major groceries and restaurants, parks and playgrounds, a car is needed to get around in the Okanagan.
Our house is perfectly located to explore the Okanagan - Canada's wine, golf, & recreation capital.
Between Kelowna and Westbank, you have your pick from a wide variety of restaurants. From an astonishing assortment of international cuisines (Thai, Indian, Vietnamese) to truly native Canadian (the Kekuli Cafe specializes in aboriginal Bannock and buffalo)
Within 20 mins, you will find a piece of Australia in the Okanagan: a Kangaroo petting-zoo (yes, you can feed and snuggle a baby wallaby). Venture a little farther and your options are almost unlimited, horseback riding, historic steam-train rides, to the amazing Myra Canyon Railway Trestle and the new Okanagan Rail Trail tours.
Day trip venues include Manning park & resort (2.5hr), Osoyoos (2hr - Canada's only desert), Kamloops (2hr - wildlife park), Vancouver (4hr), Golden (3.5hr, Northern Lights Wolf Center), Banff & Jasper (4.5hr).
Winter activities range from skiing (downhill & cross-country), snow-shoeing, to dogsledding.

This was a perfect space for a week away from home, but made infinitely better by all of Chung’s assistance. I mentioned that we really hoped to pick cherries, and although it was the end of the season, she had very quickly found some options for us that were close by. It’s the little touches that make all the difference!
The space itself was clean and quiet, with all of the essentials that we could possibly need during our time. There were even some toys for our youngest, although we spent so much time enjoying the Okanagan area that she didn’t have much energy left to play inside.
We didn’t get a chance to cross paths with our host family at the time, but very much look forward to Covid being under control soon so that we can return the favour and host at our home.
Ching was friendly and wonderful to deal with throughout the process, and took great care of our home. Unfortunately we did not get to meet since we were not in the area at the time, but communication was great before, during and after the exchange.
Ching and her family were wonderful guests in our home and I would not hesitate for a moment to recommend her to others and to welcome her again in the future!
She was a great communicator throughout, and prior, to her and her family coming. All of her communication with me was very positive. She kept me closely informed about her stay and provided great feedback about things she enjoyed in town. We'd be delighted to have Ching and her family stay again!
I look forward to one day meeting in person:)
Ching and her family were amazingly nice and easy-going. Before their stay we discussed about children-friendly activities in Paris and shopping facilities, so that I had the feeling I had known Ching for ages when I first met her! Ching's family bravely faced the hot wave with ice-blocks in their backpacks (great idea!) to go to science museums, visit farmer markets, etc. They even discovered a farmer market which I did not know of! Plus they invited us to a superior Chinese restaurant where we ate delicious dim sum especially selected by Ching! We also had a great time chatting with the whole family.
Now we wish to be able to do our part of the exchange, hopefully in 2022!
P.S. Ching is one of the pillars of the PLU community. She is one of the most active PLU members on the FB group and has 9 PLU exchanges either completed or pending! What a record!
Paul & Nancy were amazing communicators before/during/after the exchange. They were very flexible and understanding, especially during this unusual fire season.
Their condo has the most beautiful setting, overlooking both the ski slopes and golf course. We enjoyed many nice hikes in the area and explored the cutest village in Sun Peaks. Because of their recommendation, we were introduced to the most delicious ice cream and friendly local businesses.
Although we didn't manage to meet up this time, we look forward to seeing them in the future.
Thank you very much for trusting us as your first home exchangers - hope you will enjoy home exchanging as much as we do.
First of all, I'd like to express our gratitude to Penny & Glen that they trusted us with their first home exchange experience. We have been chatting causally since beginning of 2020 when they first joined PLU. So this exchange has a very special meaning to me.
Penny Lamont & Glen were wonderful hosts and made us feel very welcome even before we arrived. Penny offered us lots of tips for kids activities/what to do/where to eat/hidden gems/etc. Without her "insider advice", we wouldn't have the opportunity to take the McLure Ferry - my kids absolutely loved it!
Their house was amazing - absolutely what we needed after living pretty isolated for over a year. It's obvious that Penny was an amazing gardener - her yards were gorgeous and filled with beautiful flowers and very zen elements. We jumped into their pool every evening splashing, chilling, relaxing - we couldn't ask for anything better for our 1st exchange since Covid.
We have already said that Kamloops should be our annual trip and if another opportunity arises, we would love to exchange with Penny again. Thank you again, Penny & Glen!!!
Sarah, Jason and her family were wonderful guests - our exchange is rather set up last minute, because Covid has changed our plans. Sarah and her family was very easygoing and didn't mind my house being very basic.
Sarah was an excellent communicator and provided me updates during her stay. I especially enjoyed helping her plan their activities - after all, we wanted to make their stay as fun as could be.
We look forward to visiting Sarah and Jason in Edmonton, hopefully in 2022. I'm sure my kids would love that crazily amazing slides!!!
I really enjoyed hosting Tess and her family. Her adorable kids are similar in ages as mine, so we were very pleased to hear they had fun in our house. Tess was a wonderful communicator and we texted each other often during their stay - we swapped ideas for things to do with young kids and discovered a few new playgrounds/beaches because of her. We shared storied about ourselves, which I absolutely treasured.
We were lucky to be able to share our raspberries and tomatoes in the garden with Tess' kids, as it is our hope/goal to teach the kids where food comes from.
We look forward to visiting Tess in Calgary hopefully in 2022 and PEI maybe one day.
Kristy and her 3 kids were wonderful guests who took good care of my place during their stay. Kristy was a wonderful communicator and took time to let me know that their family enjoyed the Okanagan.
Sorry for the long delay. I'm not good with words and fear that my review is not "good enough" to fully express our gratitude. But I think leaving a positive review is the least we can do. So here I am (please excuse my grammatical / spelling errors)...
Odile and Luc were the most wonderful hosts and made our early home exchange experience a memorable one. This was our 2nd time staying as exchange guests (1st with PLU) - A lot of exchangers might be more wary with inexperience exchangers like ourselves. But Odile took us in very early on and set a very friendly stage for our exchange.
As I didn't speak French, she was instrumental during our planning stage and day-to-day activities. She met us at her place upon arrival and showed us around. Letting us know that should we need anything or help she would be available - Oh boy, I really took that to heart, as we asked for lots of advice during the trip 😍🤣, such as things to do for little kids, which museum to visit, where the nearby farmer markets were.
Her place was amazing - very centrally located with lots of amenities nearby. It has been in her family for a very long time so has lot of characters and charms, yet nicely modernized with all essentials. One day, I asked her where to buy a small blender to make smoothie for my kids (my youngest was a picky eater😅 so I was hoping to sneak in some veggies in her diet). Within a couple days, she surprised us with a blender 🥰). Her thoughtfulness is greatly appreciated.
There is no better host we could have wished for. They were supposed to be visiting us last year, but we all knew what happened in 2020. So sadly the trip has to be postpone til hopefully 2022 🤞. We can't wait to host Odile, Luc and family and return their amazing hospitality.
