Nachbarschaft
The neighbourhood is an adult living community known as "Ridgeway by the Lake". Most people that live here are retired and all are very friendly and welcoming. There is a great walking/bike trail minutes from the house (the friendship trail) that links up with the Niagara Parkway - we have two bikes that you can use to explore the area. Lake Erie is accessible within metres of our front door and we have two Kayaks available for your use.
The Village of Ridgeway (downtown Ridgeway) is within walking distance and has many quaint shops and a farmer's market on Saturdays in the summer months. There are also a few restaurants here and a microbrewery "Brimstone Brewing Company" that is popular with the locals.
Crystal Beach (a beautiful sand beach on the shores of Lake Erie) is close by (you can ride your bike or drive 5 minutes) and is a popular summer destination for people from all over Ontario as well as Western New York. There are also a few newly opened restaurants here to enjoy including San Vitos.
The nearest grocery store is a 5 minute drive and there several grocery store options in the nearby Town of Fort Erie.
Rumkommen
There are many places to visit within close proximity, however a car will be needed to get to these destinations. Possibility of a car exchange can be discussed.
Niagara Falls
The Horseshoe Falls located on the Niagara River is a 25 minute drive from our house and is the most powerful waterfall in North America, as measured by flow rate. If you are visiting Niagara Falls during your stay ensure to take in everything that the Niagara Parks has to offer including miles of hiking and biking trails, attractions like the Hornblower Boat, Journey Behind the Falls, the White Water Walk and the Whirlpool Aerocar. There are over 3000 acres of park land within the Niagara Parks that include many beautifully manicured gardens like the Botanical Gardens, Oaks Gardens and Floral Show House. Lots of history here too -visit Old Fort Erie and Fort George to learn about the war of 1812 and take a double deck bus ride to learn about the history of the park and the daredevils who challenged the falls.
Buffalo, New York
Buffalo is just across the international border (Peace Bridge) in Fort Erie. It is a 15 minute drive from the house. (not including the waiting time to get through immigration). If you are interested in American History and/or architecture a visit to Buffalo is a must. Learn about the 1901 World's Fair, the US Presidents that originated from here and the famous architects who left their mark including Frank Lloyd Wright and Louis Sullivan. I am a volunteer Docent for "Explore Buffalo" and they have over 80 different tour options.
Niagara-on-the-Lake
Explore Niagara-on-the-Lake which is about a 50 minute drive from the house. This quaint old town is at the point where the Niagara River meets Lake Ontario and is rich with history and charm. There are many important historical landmarks, numerous shops and restaurants and the world class theatre at the Shaw Festival is also located here. If you are a wine lover - the wineries in Niagara-on-the-Lake are world class. You can spend a day or two on a wine tasting adventure - be sure to try icewine.
Toronto
If you are flying in and out of Toronto - you may want to stay a few days here at the beginning or end of your trip. Toronto has so much to offer and really deserves a few days or more to explore. If you are thinking of a day trip to Toronto - it is about a 2 hour drive from our house.
