Nachbarschaft

Ridgway, Colorado (population 992) sits in a high valley at 7,000 ft in rural Southwest Colorado. Dotted with cattle ranches and surrounded by mountains, rivers, forests and lakes, Ridgway is also close to canyon country and the desert Southwest creating an unparalleled outdoor play ground with access to diverse ecosystems and several National Parks. Our home is located at the end of a cul de sac on 1.25 fenced acres in a quiet neighborhood; a 5-10 minute walk to shops, galleries, parks and several excellent restaurants in historic downtown Ridgway (True Grit starring John Wayne was filmed here). Cottonwood Creek Park parallels our property and access to a 16-acre open space with trails is a 3 minute walk. Access the paved Ridgway River Trail from our house (12 min walk/5 min bike) or RAT mountain bike trails (20 min bike or 5 min drive). The Ridgway Athletic Fields are a 5 minute walk with free tennis courts, pickle ball, basketball, skate park, soccer fields. Yoga, golf, we've got it! Swim at the Ridgway Reservoir, Uncompahgre River or Orvis Hot Springs (5 min drive) or drive 15 min to enjoy the Ouray Hot Springs with water slides, rock wall & obstacle course. We have expansive views of the Cimarron Mountains to the East and the Sneffel's mountain range to our South where day hikes are easily accessed. Wildlife sightings are common. WINTER ADVENTURE (December-March): Driving distance/times from Ridgway: 39 miles to Telluride, Colorado, “North America’s #1 Ski Resort” (Epic Ski Passes valid here) 40 miles to the steeps and powder of Silverton Ski Area or the family-friendly Kendall Mountain Ski Area in Silverton, Colorado 56 miles to Purgatory Ski Resort near Durango, Colorado 7 miles to cross-country skiing at TOP of the Pines and the Miller Mesa Trail 45 minutes to Red Mountain Pass for guided or unguided backcountry, XC & hut to hut skiing 10 miles to historic Ouray, Colorado, aka “the Switzerland of America”; world famous for its Ice Climbing Park, Ice Climbing Festival, hot springs, free ski rope tow and Victorian charm. Equipment rental, instruction and/or guides available for all the above. Did I mention hot springs? Hot springs abound and can be enjoyed year-round in Ridgway, Ouray or outside of Telluride (don’t miss the natural underground hot vapor caves and pools at the Wiesbaden in Ouray!) SPRING/SUMMER/FALL ADVENTURE (April-November): When the snow melts and the seasons change, we trade our skis for hiking boots, bikes, and swim suits. Ridgway is surrounded by some of the best hiking trails and destinations on the planet. Discover turquoise alpine lakes, dinosaur tracks, waterfalls and mountains covered in wild flowers or golden aspen depending on the season. Mountain biking is accessible from our front door at the Ridgway Area Trails (RAT Trails) for beginners to experts. Or day-trip over to Telluride, down to Durango or up to Fruita for world class single track trails. Cool off at the Ridgway Reservoir at Ridgway State Park, a man-made lake and 5-10 minute drive with swim beach, fishing, boat and SUP rentals. Tubers, anglers, rafters, SUP’ers, surfers and kayakers have fun on the Uncompahgre River which flows through town or adventure further afield to the San Miguel, Gunnison, Animas or Colorado Rivers. Climbers can enjoy dozens of sporty crags, alpine adventures or mountaineering on numerous high altitude peaks including 14,000 ft. Mount Sneffels. Ouray has three new “Via Ferrata” climbing routes. No experience, no gear? No problem. Several professional guide services can provide gear and instruction for all local adventures (children-adult). Free primitive camping is available in many National Forest and BLM locations near Ridgway (14 day limit). There are also many developed pay campgrounds (some take reservations, some are first come). Canyoneering is gaining a foothold here and is celebrated in Ouray with an annual Canyoning Festival. With Colorado’s rich mining history, our mountains are laced with old mining roads. Rent a 4x4 jeep, ATV or SxS or take a guided jeep trip on some hair-raising mountain roads to spectacular vistas. National Parks nearby include the Black Canyon near Montrose, Mesa Verde near Durango, Colorado National Monument in Grand Junction, Hovenweep National Monument and Canyon of the Ancients National Monument near Cortez and the numerous National Parks around Moab, Utah (Canyonlands, Arches, Natural Bridges, etc). “At night, Ridgway, Colorado offers you a whole other dimension for your outdoor adventures. Ridgway is designated as a Dark Sky Community by the International Dark-Sky Association. Ridgway was the third community in Colorado to be given this unique honor, due to the community's lack of light pollution that allows night skies to be viewed in great detail.” Star gazers welcome. Our region is also well known for its live music festivals in Summer and Fall (check out the Telluride Bluegrass Festival in June, The Ride Festival in July or the Blues and Brews Festival in September). Ouray and Ridgway offer free live music in the park on Thursday nights in June and July and the historic Sherbino Theater in Ridgway attracts nationally known musicians year-round. No visit to the area is complete without a drive on the “Million Dollar Highway” or the “San Juan Skyway”. Take a day trip loop drive from Ridgway to Silverton to Durango to Dolores to Rico to Telluride and back to Ridgway. Culture: Ute Indians inhabited these lands before ranchers and miners arrived. Explore our indigenous past at Mesa Verde National Park, Hovenweep National Monument, Canyon of the Ancients National Monument or the Ute Indian Museum in Montrose. The Telluride Mountain Film Festival in May and Telluride Film Festival in September draw international acclaim. Whether you like active adventure holidays, live music, soaking in hot springs or just simply “being” in beautiful places, you will find all this and more in Ridgway, Colorado. Rumkommen

It is best to have a car for exploring this area. Rental cars are available at any of the airports. Western Slope Rides offers shuttle service from Montrose and Grand Junction airports to Ridgway. You can rent jeeps locally for 1-day 4x4 excursions. 4x4, AWD, high clearance and/or good snow tires are highly recommended for Winter driving conditions. While the highways are paved, our county, city and town streets are mostly dirt and gravel. Our home is 5-10 minute walking distance to historic downtown Ridgway's shops, restaurants and grocery store. Montrose (30 minute drive) has big box stores (Walmart, Target, City Market, Natural Grocers, etc).

I'd be happy to meet-up but am most available to share information about our town, state and region. I owned an international adventure travel company and guided for many years before that so am fairly fluent in travel logistics. :-)
