General overview

*sorry friends, the guest house won’t be available until late 2024 This private guest apartment is completely removed from the main house (where we live, #9899) and is available almost any time with enough advance notice (we have a lot of friends who like to come to stay and we sometimes rent it out online). You can come and go as you please from a separate driveway and have total privacy during your stay. The upstairs is a well equipped 1 bedroom apartment with a full kitchen and marble tiled bathroom. The downstairs is a big open reception room with couches, a grand piano, and half bathroom and a full size bed. The property is located on a state road with a ‘scenic’ designation (there are beautiful views of the Housatonic River and Litchfield Hills all along the road). We’re just a short drive from several cool little New England towns. People love coming to this area on vacation. In addition, we’re centrally located from two of the major travel hubs - 2.5 hours from New York City and 2.5 hours to Boston. The apartment has a full kitchen and a large deck with a grill, overlooking the pastures and in ground gunite pool. It’s separated from the main house by a good distance so you’d have plenty of privacy.

The space

The guest apartment is small but has everything you’d need for an extended stay. It has a full kitchen, granite countertops, a queen-size bedroom, and a marble tiled bathroom. It also has a deck which looks out over the pastures and the new gunite pool. The guest apartment is available for globes/non-simultaneous/simultaneous exchanges. We run an organic farm here so we usually have some animals on the farm.

Guest access

The apartment is located above the barn, so there are 16 steps you’d need to climb to get up to the deck. It’s very private, with its own entrance, parking spots, and the deck can’t really be seen from the rest of the property (only from down in the pasture). In the downstairs area, which you’re also welcome to use, is a 6’x6’ cedar sauna, a grand piano, and a seating area. It also has French doors leading out to the blue stone patio with a pergola and Adirondack chairs around a smokeless fire pit.

Neighbourhood

The area really is great! We’re 20 minutes south of Great Barrington, MA which has so many attractions, including gourmet food and dining, museums, botanical gardens, etc. We’re just a few minutes from the Appalachian Trail and there are numerous other hiking opportunities in the area. There are also lots and lots of little New Englandy towns within half an hour, all with their own character and s attractions. I have a good house book that has tons of suggestions about where to go/eat and what to see/do while here. We have world class fly fishing and also great bass fishing on the Housatonic (just 5 min away). We have rail trails nearby, music venues, wineries, breweries, distilleries, antique shops, art galleries, several ski resorts...honestly, people come here on vacation all of the time because it’s beautiful and there’s so much to see and do.

Getting to my home

The closest airports are Bradley (BDL), Albany (ALB), or Stewart (SWF). They’re all about an hour away. From there you’d need to rent a car. After that, it’s easy. We’re not hard to find. If you’re coming from abroad, you’d want to fly into any of the New York (NYC) airports and rent a car. You could take the metro north railroad all the way up the Hudson Line to Wassaic, but you’d need to arrange for a taxi ride from wassaic to our house (35 min). There is no public transportation in the local area, but if it's a nonsimultaneous local swap during the summer, I can imagine someone being very content to just lounge by the pool or read in the poolhouse or go for walks around the farm.

Nearest airport

Bradley international. 1 hour 10 min away

Getting around

You’ll need a car if you want to explore all of the things in the local area. We’re 3.5 miles from the nearest town where there’s a brewery, grocery store, shops, etc. Everything else is farther afield, so a car is fairly essential.
