General overview

Our home is a 1935 brick bungalow in what everyone tells us is "the best location in Charleston". We are right downtown, in a very friendly neighborhood, within a 7 minute drive to the oldest parts of the city, but we enjoy a secluded, peaceful sanctuary on the banks of the Ashley River. We have a beautiful view of the river with a 900 foot dock and a private, furnished dock house. From the dock, we see dolphins feeding, catch shrimp and crabs, and enjoy seabirds of every variety. The house faces due west giving us spectacular sunsets nearly every evening. The kitchen was designed with the sunset view in mind, so the cook doesn't miss out. There is a large screened porch overlooking the yard and the river. Our house is comfortably furnished, but not fancy or fussy. We want you to relax here and enjoy it the way we do.

The space

Our home has 2 bedrooms with queen beds, and a third bedroom that has been converted to a laundry/dressing room. There are 2 full baths, comfy living room, dining room, large and well-equipped kitchen (I am a retired chef instructor), a large screened back porch with dining table, an outdoor entertaining area with fire pit, and a 900 foot dock that extends into the Ashley River. The dock house is furnished with sofas and cushions, cocktail tables and all you need to spend the day out there or watch the sunset. There are resident dolphins, otters, many types of wading birds and sea birds, and a nice population of spot-tail bass, which the local fishing guides find irresistible. The dock house has 2 kayaks, life jackets, and paddles which you are welcome to use.

Guest access

The house is two stories, with master bedroom suite upstairs along with the laundry room. Kitchen, living room, dining room, porch and guest suite are downstairs. There are ~5 steps to access the house at each door.

Notes

There is no fence or barrier between the house and the river, so our home is not suitable for very young children. We are happy to host older kids, though. We do not have any toys, but we have crabbing gear and a marsh full of life to entertain them, as well as a large, beautiful park nearby.

Neighbourhood

Our neighborhood, Wagener Terrace, was built in the 1930's and 40's, and is an authentic family neighborhood with lots of activity. Bounded on the west by the Ashley River and on the east by Rutledge Ave, one of the primary entrances to the city, we enjoy the best of all worlds: ease of access to the historic districts, downtown restaurants and nightlife, and the beaches, while enjoying peaceful privacy and access to nature. Hampton Park, a large, beautifully landscaped park forms the southern boundary of WT and offers walking trails, biking, and exercise equipment. The neighborhood is a wonderful mix of young families with children, retirees who have lived here many years, people of all ethnicities and backgrounds, and plenty of dogs that need walking. Since our house sits on the edge of the Ashley, there is a passing parade of neighbors and a nightly gathering at sunset on the corner nearest us, yet we still enjoy quiet privacy along the river's edge. It really is a magical spot.

Nearest airport

Charleston International Airport is an easy 15 minute drive from our house.

Getting around

We are very close to all historic sights and are excellent guides to all the city has to offer. The neighborhood has excellent and trendy restaurants, bars, and breweries in the newly cool UP. We have easy access to all parts of the city (10 min) as well as the beaches (15-20 min). You will want a car while you are here, because there are many places to visit outside the downtown area. However, Uber is very cheap for a night out downtown. There are also free DASH buses that make a circuit of downtown, stopping at many popular spots along the way. You can get on and off at any point. Charleston is well known for its fine dining and Lowcountry cuisine and there are restaurants in all price ranges and levels of sophistication. I have been in the F&B scene for many years and can point you to the best of them. Seafood is what we do best, but there are many other options, as well. Because the house has only 2 bedrooms in use, we prefer no more than 4 adults or 2 adults and 2 children who can bunk together. Both beds are queens with good mattresses. Each bedroom has its own bathroom.

People Like Us Local Guide

We’ve been Charleston residents for 40+ years. I’m a retired chef and culinary educator with many contacts in the F&B community. My husband was a historic preservation contractor who knows local architecture and has worked on many historic buildings. I’m happy to offer help planning your trip, can meet you for coffee, offer you a sunset glass of wine, or advise you where to dine in our food-centric city.
