General overview

Our home is a row home in Eastern Crown Heights, built in 1899 and currently configured as two separate apartments (both listed on PLU). This apartment is our primary home, which can be available weekends we are away, holidays, and some summer weeks/months.

The space

Our primary apartment is downstairs, and is two floors (first and basement) with a backyard. Up the stoop steps on the first floor is the main living space with a queen pull out couch and kitchen, a full bathroom with walk-in shower, our kids' room with bunk beds and a foldable floor mattress for an additional person (it's very comfortable - ask me how I know haha), a bedroom with a king bed, and our office with laundry, which leads out to the backyard space. The yard is very large for NYC, approximately 1100 sq ft, and has a sunken deck, paved area with a table and grill, and a large open grassy space. Downstairs is the basement, which we use as our kids' play room and our family room. It has a couch, television, another full bathroom with tub, and a guest bedroom with a queen bed. There is also a small workout area.* Our space can accommodate large groups. We can easily sleep 8-10 people between both floors if necessary. Our home is not new construction, but is functional and comfortable for NYC. If you are looking for a newer space configured more like an Airbnb, our primary apartment isn't the right place, but the upstairs rental we have listed here might be a good fit for you. We have our personal belongings here, and we have two dogs to consider. They would not be here during your stay, but an important note for allergies, etc. We have an excellent cleaner, but traces of dog hair and evidence of life will likely remain.

Guest access

This apartment is on the first floor, up eight stoop steps. If we agree to access to the basement for your stay, there is an additional flight of stairs down that is a bit narrower than standard. The yard has a step out the door and up to the grassy space in the yard. While this may be manageable for some guests with mobility issues, it may also be difficult depending on individual needs and requirements.

Notes

We strongly prefer to use our long-time cleaner for guest stays. *Depending on need/agreement, the basement may or may not be available for use during your stay, as Adam also uses it for work while I'm away with the kids

Neighbourhood

We are located on the Easternmost end of Crown Heights. Our neighborhood is quiet and on a residential block with a mix of families, many Caribbean, mostly BIPOC, who have lived here for many years, as well as new families and young professionals moving to the area. Our neighborhood is wonderfully diverse. If you are sensitive to diversity, this is not likely to be a comfortable fit for you. We have lived here for six years, and we love it. It's not far from Manhattan, but is also an area where our kids can play outside. There are several small parks and playgrounds nearby and a grocery store a five minute walk from the house. The train is five blocks from the house (a 5-10 minute walk, depending on speed), and there are bus lines running on both streets that intersect our block. Several Citibike options are within a few blocks of the house. We are at the intersection of several Bk neighborhoods, and busier streets with bars and restaurants are a quick cab, bike, or scooter ride away (1-2 miles in every direction). Bed-Stuy begins across Atlantic Ave, which you cross while walking to the train. Another couple of blocks beyond that is Broadway, where Bushwick begins. Crown Heights extends west to Prospect Park, where the Prospect Heights and Park Slope neighborhoods are. Our train line runs west across Brookyln through the Bed-Stuy, Fort Greene, downtown, and DUMBO neighborhoods.

Getting to my home

We are equidistant from JFK and La Guardia airports, about 20-30 min from each, traffic depending (if you arrive in AM/PM rush hours, it can take longer and people move to and from the city for the day). It is possible to take the A train from JFK, but it does take considerably longer (approximately 1 hour 15 min).

Getting around

We are on the A/C train lines, which travels west across Brooklyn through Bed-Stuy, Fort Greene, downtown (Barclay's Center), and DUMBO before entering lower Manhattan. It's a 20 minute train ride to downtown Manhattan. The first stop in the city is the financial district (Wall St, the bull, Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island, 9/11 memorial, etc). From there, you can transfer to trains that either go up the east or west sides of the city. If you have a car, we have street parking available, with standard alternate side rules in place for street cleaning (just follow the signs). There are also some paid parking garages/lots available if you prefer to park your car and leave it for the duration of your stay. There are several Citibike stations within blocks of the apartment, and there are bus lines that run up and down busier both streets that intersect ours. You can connect to the promenade on Eastern Parkway, which extends west to Prospect Park, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens. Several companies now offer scooter rentals as well.
