General overview

Swim, sail, fish and canoe on the pristine waters of St George's Basin. This house is in the Jervis Bay Area, famous for the whitest beaches in the world. Our house has the advantage of being sheltered from the prevailing winds in summer and is in a tranquil area.

The space

This is our “weekend retreat”. What Australians call a shack, New Zealanders call a bach, the Brits would call a cottage, Europeans a summer house and Americans call a cabin. Simple, but stylish living - two bedrooms, one bathroom, with fantastic water view across the lake. Sit on the front porch and watch the sun go down over the water– what we call “magic hour”. Early morning and late afternoon is the time to watch kangaroos come out of the bush and graze on the front lawn. During the winter, you can light the wood burning stove and the house takes on a nice, cozy atmosphere. Acquired from Natalie’s father, the house has been in our family for over 50 years.

Notes

The house isn't very big, but everyone who has ever stayed here loves it. We have listed it as sleeping 4, but there is a pull out sofa in the lounge as well. So it could sleep another person, two at a pinch. Sorry, but we aren’t interested in exchanges with Sydney suburbs. Generally we are more interested in international destinations. We would accept a Globe though! We do have a cleaner if you would like to pay for that rather than clean yourself. We live 4 hours away and so it isn’t easy for us to pop in and make up beds etc, so if you need to leave early morning, the cleaner might be a better option.

Neighbourhood

Basin View is a little known settlement on the pristine waterway of St George’s Basin, about 2. 5 hours south of Sydney. The lake or “Basin” as the locals know it, is a large saltwater body connected to the ocean by Sussex Inlet. Plenty of opportunities for safe swimming, kayaking, sailing, water skiing or fishing. The house itself backs onto a bush reserve, so lots of opportunities for walking or mountain biking. If you want to go further a field, the beautiful white sand beaches of Jervis Bay are just 15 minutes away. Jervis Bay offers a range of activities including diving (some of the best cool water diving in Australia during the winter months) , dolphin watching cruises, deep sea fishing, sea kayaking tours (they do them in the Basin as well) , boat and jet ski hire, as well as having some reasonable restaurants. The heritage listed town of Milton is about 20 minutes away and is the gateway to the Budawangs, if it is challenging hiking that you are after. If it fine dining and nightlife you are after - this is probably not the place for you! However you can't beat prawns and champagne on our balcony during the warmer months and the cozy atmosphere of the fire during winter. Food options are thankfully getting better in the area! We have a fabulous bakery less than 10 minutes away and a little pop up coffee cart at the end of the road. Also a good place to buy fresh farmed Mussels in Huskisson.

Getting to my home

It is best to have a car. The drive from Sydney is around 2.5 - 3 hours, depending on which side of the city you are coming from and the time of day.

Nearest airport

The closest airport is Shellharbour, but if you are coming internationally then Sydney is the best option.

Getting around

Best if you have a car to enjoy all that the Shoalhaven has to offer, although you can walk to a neighbourhood shop

Natalie

Simon and Natalie have been home exchanging since 2000. We love to travel this way and to open up our home to like minded people based on trust and respect. We like to travel twice or more a year and are open to a range of destinations. Because we have multiple homes we can be relatively flexible on dates. We are passionate about food and wine (Simon owns and runs a wine business) and share a love of the great outdoors (we particularly like to cycle and ski). It is just the two of us - but occasionally we will travel with another couple. We are particularly interested in international destinations, but wouldn't rule out home exchanges closer to home across Australia and New Zealand. Sorry, but we are not interested in Sydney. I travel there often for business and don’t need to go there for holidays! We are however open to globes! Natalie is the CEO of a large community services organisation and Simon owns a wine retailing business.
