Neighbourhood
Haida Gwaii is unlike any other part of the world, very remote and informed by the rich and fascinating Haida culture. Our home is in Daajing Giids (formerly known as Queen Charlotte Village), in the south end of Graham Island. A 10-minute drive away is the Haida Heritage Centre and the Haida village of Skidegate; an hour's drive north and you're in the village of Masset. A further 20-30 minutes' drive brings you to Tow Hill and North Beach, an area of stunning natural beauty and the site of the Haida people's creation myth.
Nearest airport
There are two airports: one in Masset, served by Pacific Coastal Airlines; and one in Sandspit, served by Air Canada. Most people arrive via Vancouver. Alternatively, you can drive to Haida Gwaii, but you must take at least one ferry (from Prince Rupert across the Hecate Strait to Skidegate) and, if coming up the beautiful "Inside Passage" on the coast, two or three ferries in total.
Getting around
If you wish to explore the rest of the island, it's very useful to rent a car. If your exploration is limited to less than ten trips, however, we could discuss the use of our (older model) Honda minivan. Also, the locals are friendly, and it's usually possible to arrange a ride with someone in advance or on the spot. Other modes (like taxi and buses) are extremely limited or non-existent. Our home is in walking distance to shops and restaurants, but it's a steep walk up the road, so it's not ideal for people with mobility or health challenges who don't have a car.
