Overijssel is known for its lakes, polders and streams, and among them you will find beautiful historic cities such as Zwolle, Kampen and Deventer. All the richness of their history is reflected in the wonderful monuments that adorn these cities. You will also find in this area the unique town of Giethoorn, "the Venice of the North", where all the houses are on the water's edge. Zwolle features a wealth of historic buildings and attractions, such as the Grote Kerk, a magnificent example of a Gothic church, which stands proudly in the old town and is recognized throughout the region. The Peperbus Tower is actually part of the Basilica of Our Lady, and climbing its public observation deck is a great way to see the city from a different angle and make out the outline of the star-shaped canals. Deventer is a centuries-old Hanseatic city on the banks of the IJssel river with a wonderful history, present in every corner of the city. Wonderful monuments, beautiful squares, old museums, and also a warm and welcoming atmosphere for those who prefer to go shopping, or enjoy a café or a restaurant. Don't miss the local specialty: the "Deventer koek" cake. Giethorn, located in the Weerribben-Wieden National Park, is an idyllic village in Overijssel where numerous thatched farmhouses were built on small islands, connected by more than 170 small bridges. It is located in an environment full of lakes, reed beds and wooded areas. Giethoorn has a good gastronomic reputation. There are several wonderful restaurants and most are located on the water's edge. Not far from Giethoorn you will find Zuiderzee villages such as Vollenhove and Blokzijl. You will stroll through historic buildings, churches and centuries-old castles, and you can relax on a terrace at the water's edge. Enschede, on the other hand, is the city with the most inhabitants of Overijssel, and had its moment of glory thanks to the textile industry, becoming the Manchester of the Netherlands. Now it is a modern city with large cultural and leisure complexes. Worried about expenses? We're here to help you stretch your budget with free accommodations.
