North Rhine-Westphalia is the most populous German state, has produced many important artists and is one of the largest cultural regions in Europe. Numerous museums, stages, orchestras and concert halls, musicals and events attract many millions of visitors every year. In addition to unique cultural and active offerings, North Rhine-Westphalia also offers traditional custom events such as carnivals and fairs, as well as many shopping opportunities. By the way, gourmets are not left out in North Rhine-Westphalia either: more than 40 starred restaurants are here. Gourmets are also invited to sample the many regional specialties, from Aachen Printen to Westphalian ham on the bone. Düsseldorf, a center of fashion, arts and shopping, is the state capital. The city boasts lively nightlife options, excellent restaurants and some of the best museums in North Rhine-Westphalia. If you're a car buff, don't miss the vintage models on display at the Classic Remise Düsseldorf center. For shopping, head to Königsallee, an urban boulevard with designer stores and a beautiful canal. Cologne's impressive medieval buildings are also worth a visit. Cologne is the most populous city in the state and one of the largest in Germany. It is the runway for the world-famous Kölner carnival, a street festival full of music, fireworks and fairground stalls. And the must-see is the Cologne Cathedral, a Roman Catholic church dating from the mid-13th century. Cologne beats quieter when viewed from the Köln Triangle, the observation deck atop a modern skyscraper across the Rhine, from where the cathedral rises steaming above the sea of clouds in the historic center. And back across the Hohenzollern Bridge the colorful houses of the former Fischmarkt fish market are the photographic counterpoint to the Groß St. Martin church. You can also travel to Muenster, an independent city located in this state. Muenster offers many outdoor activities, such as nature walks, rock climbing, horseback riding and mountain biking. The town is famous for being home to Muenster Cathedral, an impressive 13th century church. Also, on the outskirts is the Aasee, a beautiful artificial lake. Cologne boasts Germany's best carnival, and you can't argue with that because "Rose Monday" is one of the best parades of allegorical, mocking and provocative floats. However, Düsseldorf, Bonn or even Aachen also celebrate the carnival very intensively, so there is nothing better than participating in all of them. Worried about expenses?
