Bordeaux is famous for its 18th century architecture, a heritage that today we can enjoy in all its splendor: at every step of this French town, founded on the banks of the Garonne River, we find such outstanding monuments as the Pey-Berland tower (the separate bell tower of the Saint-André cathedral), the esplanade des Quinconces, the Grand Opera House and up to 350 historic buildings. The best way to discover the beautiful buildings and historical jewels of the city is to take a leisurely stroll on foot or by bike. Bordeaux has the largest number of preserved historic buildings in the country, second only to Paris, so there is plenty to see. The Miroir d'Eau is the largest reflecting pool in the world. Its 3450 square meters give us a spectacular reflection of the Place de la Bourse. The city's cathedral, dating from the 11th century, is magnificent, as is the Pey Berland Tower, which rises next to it and offers incomparable views. In addition, there are bridges, churches, palaces and countless art galleries worth seeing. At one end of Saint Catherine Street is Victory Square, popular for its bars and the pair of giant cast-iron turtles at its center. At the other end is the Place de la Comédie, where the Grand Théâtre is located. Built on an ancient Roman road, it is more than a kilometer long, making it the longest commercial avenue in Europe. Walking along it you can find all kinds of clothing stores (at various prices), accessories, restaurants and even street musicians. Bordeaux has what could be the world's wine amusement park, the Cité du Vin, also because the city has been an international reference for wine since the 18th century. Today, some 14,000 producers continue the venerable tradition, combining it, as in the Cité du Vin itself, with state-of-the-art technology. But what will matter to you on your visit is this: wherever you go, be it a café, a restaurant or a nightclub, you will be served good wine. Bordeaux, the sixth largest city in France, is a destination you should not miss for anything in the world. Worried about expenses?
