General overview

My two-story home is in a friendly neighborhood full of mature trees and historic homes within walking distance of the beautiful Tacoma waterfront.

The space

It's bright and cozy with a gas fireplace, modern furnishings, and a small garden with flowers, a patio, gas grill, and a fire table. My home was built in 1900 and features high ceilings, a beautiful staircase, and other classic details that give it timeless beauty yet it is totally modern and comfortable. My front porch gets the afternoon sun and is a perfect place to relax with a glass of wine at the end of the day, especially in the long, lingering evenings of the Pacific Northwest summer! I don't have cable tv so no network television or pro sports, but I do have a nice 40" Roku tv in the living room for watching Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon videos. Both bedrooms are upstairs, one with a queen-sized bed and en suite 3/4 bathroom. The other bedroom is also furnished with a queen bed and has a full bath across the hall. I have a treadmill for exercising on those rainy days when you want to stay in. And if I don't have them with me, guests are welcome to use my bicycles (one requiring shoes with clips), paddle board or kayak. You'll love my place as your base for exploring our beautiful region, engaging in all sorts of outdoor activities, or just relaxing!

Guest access

Two-story with stairs and some stairs up to the house from the street.

Notes

Tacoma is a great location, being equidistant to the Cascade mountains, home of Mt. Rainier National Park (1.5 hrs) and endless hiking trails as well as Olympic National Park's mountains, temperate rainforest and Pacific coast beaches. It's about 40 minutes to Seattle for easy day trips, but has a much more relaxed atmosphere and way less traffic than the big city. Tacoma has so much to offer with a great zoo and aquarium, wonderful parks, a vibrant arts scene, and lots of casual and upscale restaurants and bars. I have housecleaners and ask that you cover the $130 cleaning fee via Venmo or PayPal prior to your stay. I do keep a tidy house that you will find clean and comfortable!

Neighbourhood

I live within walking distance of the Proctor District neighborhood in Tacoma and very near to the tranquil University of Puget Sound campus. This neighborhood serves as the hub of our community with restaurants and coffee shops, small gift shops, library, both a regular and upscale supermarket with fabulous prepared food, a Saturday Farmer's Market and many seasonal festivals. I also live close to downtown Tacoma with live theater, movies, and many more restaurants and shops. North Tacoma is surrounded by gorgeous Puget Sound and is home to Point Defiance Park, one of the country's largest urban parks with miles of beautiful walking and biking trails through the forest and along the waterfront. Like to paddleboard or kayak? Ocean launch areas are just minutes away or you can go to some of the lowland or alpine lakes in the region. You can also ride the ferry across the bay to pastoral Vashon Island for a fun day trip. There is so much to do here!

Getting around

There is a city bus stop on my corner. You can walk to the neighborhood shopping district. Uber/Lyft serve the area extensively.

Karen

I am a single woman in my 50s who is recently retired from a long career working in wildlife conservation. My career as a zoologist and wildlife educator has led me to many parts of the world and I'm excited to keep discovering new nature destinations. Most of my travel centers around wildlife observation and photography but I also enjoy dining, wine and cocktails. I'm very outdoorsy and love to hike, bike, swim, kayak and paddle board. Mountain and water destinations are my favorites! I now have lots of free time and am open to exploring most any place, although not particularly interested in big cities. I love overland travel with my 4X4 camper that helps me reach destinations off the beaten path. I plan to drive to Alaska for the summer of 2024. Domestically, I'm super interested in Colorado, Wyoming and Idaho (mountain areas); Arizona and south Texas for birding. Internationally I especially want to spend time in Switzerland, see New Zealand, Tasmania and other parts of Australia. I'm going to Antarctica in Dec/Jan 2021 and would love to extend my trip to see Argentina and Chile, especially Patagonia. I'm quite gregarious and really love connecting with others when I travel, especially with local residents for gaining travel trips and to learn more about the local neighborhoods.
