Neighbourhood

We live in the hamlet of Villiers attached to the village of Machault. It's an area with large farms so we are surrounded by fields of corn, wheat, barley, rye, rape-seed and, quite new, linen. There are a number of families with young children in our immediate neighbourhood, as well as others whose children are now grown-up. There is a fairly decent restaurant and bar in Machault as well as an excellent bakery and a well-stocked little grocery store which does roast chicken at the weekends!. There are two village tennis courts and, of course, a "boules" court which is used daily by the locals. Fontainebleau is very lively, home to the world's number 1 ranked business school (INSEAD) and a number of other top-ranking universities so it's full of restaurants, bars and up-market shops. The town was built around the beautiful Fontainebleau Palace. There's a Real Tennis court adjacent to the palace, one of only three functioning Real Tennis courts left in France. It's open to the public and they lend you the equipment. Those who like to boulder consider Fontainebleau forest to be amongst the world's top bouldering attractions. But it's also fine if you just want to have a walk! There are some excellent restaurants in the area, both in Fontainebleau and in the neighbouring towns and villages. Fontainebleau train station is a 10-minute drive from our house. There are trains every 30 minutes to and from Paris so our home is a great base for visiting not only Paris, but also beautiful towns like Moret-sur-Loing and Barbizon, both beloved of the Impressionist painters; Vaux-le-Vicomte, the palace that inspired Versailles; Provins, a remarkably preserved Medieval city; the fortress of Blandy-les-Tours which is a 15 minutes drive away. Versailles is an hour's drive away and you could even take some day-trips to visit the Loire chateaux from here.

Nearest airport

Roissy Charles-de-Gaulle airport is an hour's drive due north. Orly is also about an hour's drive (it looks much closer on the map but traffic is heavier).

Getting around

A car is mandatory as there is no public transport to the village. We are open to car-swapping.
