General overview

Our home, built in 1900, is a nice example of Portland architecture of that time. It has high ceilings and hardwood floors throughout. At 1,800 s.f. (plus a basement), the home is comfortable for up to 6 people. We’ve been remodeling and updating the home since we purchased it in 1990. We also co-own a home in Manzanita on the Oregon coast (sleeps 9) that is also available for exchange alone or in combination with our Portland house.

The space

Upstairs are two bedrooms, a den and a small full bath. The two bedrooms have queen sized beds. The den has comfy sectional couch that folds out to a queen bed. The upstairs bath includes a large claw foot bathtub, original to the home. Downstairs is the kitchen, dining room, living room and a full bathroom. The leather couch and chairs in the living room comfortably seat six. The downstairs bath has a spacious tiled shower. The basement holds the laundry facilities, storage and an exercise area. We have a Peloton bike, hand weights, weight bench and a variety of mats and stretching/rolling implements. We enjoy music of all kinds, so you’ll find a good stereo system and a huge collection of CDs. We also have three flat screen TVs for watching our limited TV channel selection or accessing your streaming services. We have two small grandchildren so we have a variety child items including portable crib, bouncy seat, high chair, booster chair, baby gates, potty seat, books and toys.

Guest access

There are three stairs to enter the house. You must be able to navigate a flight of wooden stairs to reach the bedrooms on the upper floor.

Notes

While we don't have any pets, our daughter's dog visits a couple of hours a week. The house will be thoroughly cleaned before your visit. Our next door neighbor has 3 cats that often visit our back deck, so the outdoor chairs may have cat hair. We are open to a discussion about you bringing a small dog. No large dogs or cats please. We have a housecleaner that comes every other week. If the timing works out, we'll ask for very limited cleaning from you and we will pay the housecleaner for her regular day. If the timing doesn't coincide with your visit, you can clean yourself or I can check to see if we can get an extra cleaning and I'd ask for you to pay the additional cost of $100.

Neighbourhood

Oregon, located in the Northwest USA, is known for its natural beauty. The western part of the state, where we live, has evergreen forests as well as farmland known for growing strawberries, hazelnuts and producing world-class wines. The central and eastern areas of the state are high desert landscape with an unmatched rugged beauty. The state borders the Pacific Ocean, just 1-1/2 hour drive from our home. Seattle, Washington is a 3 hour drive north. Portland, the largest city in Oregon, is located in the northwestern part of the state near the border with Washington State. It is a city of many bridges with the Columbia River to the north and the Willamette River running through the heart of the city. It is a vibrant, modern city with great restaurants and cultural activities while being just minutes from nature. The temperate climate makes it a wonderful place to visit in any season – although it does rain a bit in the winter! But the winter rains make for beautiful green summers. Our home is located in the NW district of Portland, an ideal location to explore the city and surrounding areas. As one of the oldest neighborhoods in Portland, you’ll find many beautiful homes built between the late 1880’s and early 1900’s. We are in the midst of one of the city’s best shopping districts (NW 23rd Ave) with dozens of restaurants, grocery stores, places of worship and entertainment within a few blocks. Portland is famous for our micro breweries - there are several family friendly pubs within blocks. We are a short walk or street car ride to the exclusive Pearl District and downtown Portland. Also very nearby are Forest Park (the largest forested park inside a city in the USA), the Portland Rose Garden, Japanese Gardens, the Oregon Zoo, and, in the summer, an amazing farmer’s market. Portland is a great launching spot for day trips throughout the region. Here’s just a few things you can see within 1-2 hours drive from Portland: The Columbia River Gorge – exceptional hiking and mountain bike trails with majestic views of the river and gorge. Also, some of the world’s best windsurfing! Wine country – dozens of local wineries featuring Oregon’s award winning pinot noir Mt. Hood – offers year round skiing as well as spectacular areas for hiking/biking and camping. In the early summer the mountain flowers are amazing. The Oregon Coast – some of the most beautiful rugged beaches you’ll find anywhere. Oregon offers complete public access to all our beaches, so you can walk for miles. Our home in Manzanita (sleeps 9) is also available for exchange. Nearest airport

Portland International Airport is 14 miles (about 40 minute drive) from our home. Portland Union Station is less than 2 miles away if you choose to arrive by train (Amtrak).

Getting around

Public transportation is easy to access from our home (3 bus lines and street car line within 3 blocks and a short distance to the MAX light rail station). Our 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid (seats 5) may be available in the exchange.

People Like Us Local Guide

I'd love to meet visiting PLU members for coffee or a meal. I can offer suggestions for places to visit in the Portland area and throughout Oregon. We're avid hikers and may be able to take you to some of our favorite hikes if we're not out traveling ourselves!
