Neighbourhood
Bovey Tracey, the "Gateway to Dartmoor", is a small town (pop 7,000) with a variety of shops and pubs. Make Southwest (previously The Devon Guild of Craftsmen), based beside the river in the middle of the town, is one of the best art/craft galleries in the country and has a shop, exhibition space and cafe. Dartmoor National Park, the prime tourist attraction in the south west of England, covers an area of about 400sq miles. It is a fabulous place for sightseeing, hiking and finding some solitude. There are easy walks from the house, through woods and beside the river Bovey. A level 10km off-road cycle/foot path to Newton Abbot is close by, also a 16km off-road path to Moretonhampstead, as well as more challenging routes. There are many places to eat locally, from takeaways to cosy pubs to Gidleigh Park, one of the country's top restaurants. The historic cities of Exeter and Plymouth can be reached in about half an hour, as can the coast at Torquay, Teignmouth and Brixham. The picturesque towns of Totnes and Dartmouth are also a must-see on a visit to Devon. Further afield is the rugged coast of north Devon (a drive of about an hour and a half), and much of Cornwall is easily accessible in under two hours.

Getting around
It is a five minute walk to the shops in Bovey Tracey.
To enjoy all Devon has to offer a car is essential.
A recent exchange review through another company:
"Kevin and Annette were kind enough to allow us to stay their lovely sunny bungalow in Bovey Tracey. It is full of interesting art works and very neat and tidy with lots of thoughtful touches. The kitchen is a dream and very well equipped . We also enjoyed the sheltered rear garden. BT is just five minutes walk away and has all the shops, pubs and takeaways you may need. Also there is regular bus service to Exeter. Kevin left detailed info on walks, many of which started from the house. We would often do one of these in the morning, returning for leisurely lunch, siesta and then have a late afternoon trip out in the car. After a few minutes drive you are onto spectacular Dartmoor. We were greatly impressed with Grimspound prehistoric settlement and Buckland Beacon with spectacular views. We also visited Dawlish, Teignmouth, Kingsbridge and Totnes, all within easy reach through pretty countryside. We did one long (70 mile each way) trip to Tintagel which was well worth it. However the best aspect of our visit was being reunited with my sister in Ivybridge who I had not seen for several years. So we thank you for the use of your house. I would strongly recommend it and we hope you go on to enjoy many other exchanges." Nick and Belinda
