General overview
Your own second Catskills home in a magical town! Hike or ski the peaks, bask in the sunny yard, swim, tube or fly fish in the creek, barbecue, dine out farm to table, relax by the fire pit or in the gazebo. Come enjoy the beauty and peace of the Catskills in an airy, spacious light filled home, a mid-century modern ranch, with its open flow & sounds of birds & the creek. LGBTQ always welcome.
The space
This is a place where the pressures of daily life can be left behind, a place very well suited for relaxation. There's no shortage of coziness and comfy vibes, along with its quiet and private nature, thanks largely due to the trees and mature hedges surrounding the perimeter of the property, around a very beautiful and lush park-like yard. It is so relaxing to sit outside on one of the swings or chaise lounges, or to open up the windows and listen to the sounds of nature and the roaring creek. The house’s decor has a little retro flair, but with a clean and stylish contemporary feeling, exuding warmth and homeyness. Natural light fills the house, adding to its airy nature. The well-stocked kitchen is a joy to cook in too.
The Hideaway is full of modern amenities like fast wifi and a large screen smart TV where you can log into Netflix and such with ease, but also has lots of sweet little homey touches too sprinkled around the house. For some old-school down time, make sure to check out my extensive collection of classic board games and large library of books on the Catskills and Hudson Valley. You'll hopefully find my place to live up to its name and a special place you can recharge and reconnect, with nature, yourself and with others. The bridge leading to the storied and very beautiful Woodland Valley area is nestled just steps around the bend. You'll also have lovely mountain views in almost all of the windows from the house. Relaxing and fun at any time of the year, this is without question a four season retreat!
If you're heading to town for a wedding, the Hideaway is just ten minutes to the Emerson, Foxfire House, and Mt. Tremper Arts, and convenient to many of the other area popular wedding sites.
This is also a very good place for a quiet retreat. Menla and the Zen Mountain Monastery are nearby. I'd also be happy to recommend good local spots for yoga, acupuncture, massage or a spa day, and I'll gladly share my most meditative walking spots, just ask. Some of them are heavily wooded old carriage roads where you can walk in the footsteps of John Burroughs.
Good news skiers, Hunter Mountain, Bellayre, and Plattekill ski areas are all short drives from the house, and Windham isn't that much further. Lots of options around too for snow boarding, snow shoeing, cross country skiing, and winter hiking.
Hikers will be in paradise. Some of the finest trails in the Catskills are close by including Slide Mountain, Giant Ledge, Pantherkill, Devils Path, Mt. Tremper, Overlook, and so many more. Phoenicia is home to an easy to moderate short hike, the Tanbark Trail, that leads to an idyllic vista of our town. More experienced hikers may wish to check out the the local trailhead for the famed Long Path, only about a ten minute walk from the Hideaway, and the famed hiking trails of nearby Woodland Valley are about a ten minute drive.
And there are countless other outdoor recreational options. You can walk just two minutes from the house to the mighty Esopus, one of the major tributaries feeding into the New York City water supply system, and find access right there off the bridge for swimming and world class fly fishing. The super fun Rail Explorers rail bike attraction is also a stone's throw from the house, and so is the Town Tinker for tube rentals!
If you're coming up to check out the area's amazing food scene, the house is close to some of the finest dining in the Catskill Park region including the Peekamoose, Phoenicia Diner, Tavern 214, the Pines, Bear Cafe, and many more. Breakfast lovers, are you in fora treat with the Diner so close by, but also Sweet Sue's and their legendary flying saucer-sized pancakes are two minutes away and also not to be missed. My guide book will also lead you to some of the most insanely good cooked-to-order donuts imaginable.
Two wonderful craft breweries are also close by, Woodstock Brewing and West Kill Brewery. If you're interested in checking out the local spirits scene, outstanding local vodka and cider distilleries are not too far afield either!
Phoenicia has shops and restaurants galore, but you can take day trips to the other happening towns in the Catskill and Hudson Valley regions too. It's also just a 20-minute drive to the most famous small town in America, Woodstock, with its quaint village green and live music scene.
Make sure to check out our outstanding local theater, the Phoenicia Playhouse, and our fantastic art gallery, home of regular art parties and openings. Book far ahead for the amazing Phoenicia Festival of the Voice held held the first weekend in August where you can hear gorgeous operas under the stars. And there are countless other opportunities for culture in the region.
Are you into live music? Woodstock and Kingston both have several venues and a great scene of songwriters and musicians following the traditions of greats like Dylan, Neil Young, and local heroes The Band. Only ten minutes from the Hideaway is the Pines, which has great local and sometimes national touring artists almost every weekend night. The quality bar is astonishingly high. There is a good locally sourced food there and a lively bar scene too. You might be sitting next to a fireman, or a filmmaker. You just never know, but you'll soon find out!
If all of this isn't enough, farm stands and antique stores can be found dotting Route 28, along with no shortage of yard sales from spring through fall. What's not to love?

Neighbourhood
My house sits on a quiet residential street about two minutes by car from the village, or you can take a very scenic twenty minute creekside walk there. The views of the mountains and water are breathtaking. You might see a bald eagle flying overhead, a family of deer or wild turkeys, or a myriad of other wildlife. The surrounding homes in my neighborhood are resided in by both year round and second home owners and renters. You'll have all the privacy you like in the house and enclosed yard, but if you walk around, you are bound to meet some wonderful people. We have an eclectic community, and a great many artists and musicians live here. The house itself feels very private but not secluded. It offers the conveniences of being only a mile from Phoenicia's main drag, but closer to utterly amazing swimming and fishing areas and hiking trails, and so much more.
Getting around
The Trailways bus from NYC stops in town in front of the hardware store, a 20 minute walk to the house. Or, once the bus stops in Phoenicia, you can then even ask the bus driver to drop you off at Woodland Valley Road and Route 28, which will put you a mere few blocks from the house. Local bus service along the mountain towns on Route 28 and to Kingston is available but the schedule is quite limited. Countless guests have enjoyed my home without a car, but please note that Lyft and Uber have not found their way here just yet and area car services and taxis are woefully limited and hard to find. Cars can be rented in Kingston, about a half hour away, and at the airports. . More intrepid travelers should plan on bringing a car, as our towns are so spread out, but Phoenicia has so many good restaurants and fun things to do, if you don't mind a little walking, you can forgo one entirely, although this is not recommended in the wintertime. It should also be noted that our town has no food delivery at all. Drivers, please note that the driveway has room for two cars, and street parking is available in the daytime only. Bikers tend to love it here, but will need to bring their own rides!

I'm drawn to traveling to off the beaten path spots, but have been known to enjoy cities as well. I have a cute two bedroom house in the heart of the Catskill Mountains to swap. It is a few hundred feet away from a beautiful creek for fly fishing and swimming, and about 20 minutes from two two major ski slopes.
