General overview
Mad Hatteras is on the northern outskirts of Hatteras Village on Hatteras Island. We are on the edge of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore so the beach is very quiet and serene. The Pamlico Sound is below our back deck so we have water all around. You can sit on the front deck and watch dolphins or kiteboarders along with the sunrise and a cup of coffee in the morning. In the evening you can watch the sunset over the sound. We are close to the Hatteras Ferry where you can for free ride the ferry to Ocracoke Island and if you plan it right you can have a free sunset cruise on the way back. =) We are located about 6 hrs from Wasington DC and about 8 hrs from New York. The movie Nights In Rodanthe with Diane Lane and Richard Gere was filmed up the beach from us. Since our condo is on a barrier island (water on both sides) there is a 2.5 mile bridge over the sound to get on the island. There are so many places to explore including the Wright Bros Museum, and 5 lighthouses that still are used today. Rest assured you will be as busy as you want to be or you can just kick back and enjoy the sound and ocean which are at your fingertips.
The space
We have a 2bd/2ba condo. There is a queen bed in the master, a single over double bunk in the second bedroom and we have a brand new queen sofa sleeper in the living room.We can sleep a max of 6. We have a washer and dryer in the unit and all the necessities that you would need for cooking. We have keypad access so you will get a code upon arrival. We will provide sheets and
towels for any of our guests.
Guest access
We are on the second or top floor and we have no elevators so there is two flights of stairs. Also we have a circular staircase which leads to the loft master with en suite bathroom. Since this is our vacation home and we do rent it out we ask guests to please cover the cleaning fee which is dependent on length of stay but in general runs about $200
Notes
We have no blocked dates as it will depend on the exchange. We supply boogie boards, a starter supply of tp, pt, handsoap, garbage bags, laundry pods and dishwashing pods. We also supply beach chairs, beach umbrella, crabbing nets and sand toys. On the property we have a private dock, bbq, under the building showers and a fish cleaning station.

Neighbourhood
Plenty of restaurants and things to do.... We supply a Kayak and down the street you can rent kiteboarding equipment, surfboards or surf fishing equipment. Plenty of beaches ... right in front of you and lighthouses plus the ferry to keep you busy. There is also a passenger ferry besides the car ferry which you can take to Ocracoke a small island with big heart to the south of us.
Getting to my home
Closest airport is Norfolk which still leaves about a 3 hr drive to the island but the last 2 hrs is breathtaking with the ocean and dunes on one side and the sound on the other. You will need a car to get around.
Getting around
If you drive or rent a 4 wheel drive vehicle or AWD you can air down tires and with a permit drive on the beaches here. A must see is the wild Mustangs of Corolla, a few hrs north of us. Its a beautiful drive. Believed to have arrived on several Spanish Galleons in the 1800’s they roam the beaches. We are very excited that 5 new babies were born this spring. You can drive to see them with 4wd or Awd otherwise there are many different tour companies. All year we watch dolphins and in the spring you can even watch whales. During the fall we have quite a few loggerhead turtle hatchings. Each little town on Hatteras Island and in the OBX are very unique and have their own wonderful qualities. The movie “ Nights in Rodanthe” with Diane Lane and Richard Gere was filmed in Rodanthe which is about a 30 minute drive north of us.
