General overview

Immaculately presented, my home is a large modern, single level dwelling with a picturesque outlook over a serene 2.5 acre property

The space

This is a large home with a sitting area, dining area and kitchen in an open plan L shape. A formal lounge opens off from the sitting area and ranch slider doors open from here on to a large deck which is partially covered. You can also reach this deck from double doors opening off the modern kitchen. One bedroom has its own ensuite and the other two bedrooms on the other side of the house share the main bathroom. Both bathrooms are fully tiled and offer walk in access to the showers. The main bathroom is large and has a bath which is raised on a tiled plinth. The bedroom with the ensuite has a king sized bed. The other two bedrooms have queen sized beds. The grounds are mainly in lawn with a stand of tōtara trees in the bottom of the garden. You are able to go through a gate at the end of the garden and step down on to the Te Araroa Trail, a trail for hikers that goes the complete length of New Zealand. This track leads to the beautiful Rainbow Falls and down to the Stone Store basin, an historic area with New Zealand’s oldest stone building. There is a parking area in front of the house as well as a garage which houses the laundry.

Guest access

Entry through the garage area is level but probably would not fit a wheelchair due to a narrowish corridor connecting the house.

Notes

With no public transport system in Kerikeri, you will probably need a hire car. If I am away overseas, a car could be available for your use. I am happy to pick up from the airport of bus if that is your preferred method of arrival (if I am in the country - can organise someone else if necessary). My house has its own septic tank system and water tanks but water is plentiful. Hot water is via gas tanks. Cooking is electric.

Neighbourhood

Although on a busy road, my home is tucked down a long driveway which gives good privacy. It is set back from the Te Araroa Trail; a fence separates the property from this public walkway. The walkway is fabulous - you walk through a well formed track, amongst native plantings and past waterfalls. Dogs are not permitted on some of these tracks as kiwi live amongst the bush. While you are here I would recommend visiting other parts of the Bay of Islands. A trip to Cape Reinga at the top of the North Island is a treat, taking around 3 to 4 hours by car. Waitangi is the home of much of New Zealand’s history and there you will find a museum, marae, and beautiful grounds. You can opt for a cultural tour which will give context to what you have seen in the two museums on site. I would also recommend a trip into the Puketi Forest (only 15 minutes drive) where you can see beautiful Kauri trees. Or opt to drive to the West Coast (Hokianga) to visit the father of the forest - the mighty Tane Mahuta ( a kauri tree like no other). Or drive to the seaside town of Paihia with bars and cafes; hop on a ferry to visit Russell (was the capital of NZ at one point and very historical) or go further into the Bay on one of the Fullers trips to go through the Hole in the Rock or see dolphins. There are beautiful beaches not too far away on the East Coast and the views from the drive around this coastal highway are to die for. End up at Mangonui and try out the famous fish and chip shop! Explore the Stone Store basin (Kororipo Heritage Park) and visit the Waka house and Te Ahurea Village, an interactive pa site. There is a Thai restaurant 3 minutes walk away and several other wonderful eating places in Kerikeri. Also lots of cafes! And the Old Packhouse Market is a must for a Saturday or a Sunday.

Getting to my home

You can visit my home either by flying or by car. The trip from Auckland takes approximately 3.5 hours by car. There are buses which depart from Auckland and stop off in Kerikeri

Kerikeri Airport is a 12 minute drive away.

Getting around

There really is no public transport in Kerikeri. You would need a car to get around while here. We do have taxis (but strangely enough, no traffic lights).
