General overview
360 degree view of the water. Sitting upstairs on our flybridge watching the sunset, sipping Moscow Mules after work, waiting for my husband’s latest dinner masterpiece to finish its time on the grill—that’s my everyday reality. We’re a rarity here in this island kingdom, and lots of people SAY they envy us, but the truth is, it takes a special kind of person to live on a boat. The best part is the breeze and the feeling of not being surrounded by walls. The view is always changing.
The space
Three en suite bedrooms, lounge, galley kitchen, dining area, all indoors with full height ceilings. (No stooping to enter any room) Fly bridge up top is covered, and sometimes enclosed with clear surrounds (winter). Six people could sleep here if we felt certain that we could vacate the premises. Anyone who owns a boat understands the importance of understanding how the plumbing works. Women of child-bearing age and children who throw things into toilets are our only concerns. 😯
Guest access
Definitely not accessible for wheelchairs or anyone who struggles with stairs. Small children would need to be closely supervised, but watching the comings and goings of boats and people fascinates them.
Notes
The boat is big enough that movement is imperceptible. At dusk, when boats return to the marina, there’s sometimes a bit of motion, but nothing that would make anyone seasick, and it lasts about 30 seconds. It actually is the only time that you feel like you’re on the water. AND, it’s the best time to sit up top in silence, and just do nothing.

Neighbourhood
Several marina restaurants and bars adjacent to our secure parking lot. Also there are larger hotel restaurants and nightclubs on Amwaj Island.You can walk the perimeter of this man-made island in 30 minutes. Many expats settle here to get away from the big city feel of Bahrain. Amwaj has three shopping areas, complete with spas, karaoke, bowling, fast food, good sushi, grocery stores with delis, and even a cinema. Alcohol is allowed in many of these places, and consuming it is very socially acceptable.
Getting to my home
Getting here is super easy from the airport. Exit immigration and follow the signs to the taxi stand. Make sure they take credit card if you need that)The trip to Amwaj Marina will take you 15 minutes and cost you 6 - 8 BD ($15-$20). That’s it.

Getting around
You can use our car, but if you’re a new driver or very timid, you might want to use Uber. Ubers are EVERYWHERE here, and very affordable. Driving is not bad, compared to many places in the world, but coming from small town USA, I was a bit overwhelmed at first. The forts, Formula One track, concert venues, 5-star dining experience$, and cultural sights of Bahrain are on the main island. Everything on the main island is 15 - 45 minutes away.

People Like Us Local Guide
I can meet for a drink or a meal, but I'm not really a good resource for a tour of the country. We stay away from touristy things and just enjoy playing on the water, going to work, and going to The British Club for swimming, workouts, games of squash and racquetball and cheap drinks with friends. We'd be happy to have you join us. :)

Ted and Brenda. Kiwi pilot and American teacher, currently living an expat life together on a 48-foot motor yacht in Bahrain for at least three more years. We’re both loving our jobs and the lifestyle here too much to retire. For fun we golf on the island’s championship level golf course, or head to The Brit Club for rigorous games of squash, followed by affordable beers, and sometimes dinner with the gang. By far, the best days are the days when we are on the water. Sometimes we take the yacht out for a cruise to a nearby island. Other days we take our Mastercraft out for day of skiing, or we go for a sail on our little 23-foot Etap sailboat. Note: Ted can teach ANYONE how to waterski There are cultural, historical and shopping sites to see as well, but we’re too busy working and playing.
