General overview

We are on a big adventure and decided to buy and renovate a farm! The first phase is underway where we have undertaken a beautiful extension to our home. We aren't too far from finished now, I have uploaded various photos throughout the development so need to do a round of final "after" photos. There are still a couple of areas requiring work, so not yet the full finished product but close! Here is our instagram page if you want to see what we're up to! https://www.instagram.com/oakfarmrenovation/?hl=en As you can see from the photos we have a new large kitchen diner, perfect for family life. Theres also an adjoining downstairs bathroom. Upstairs we have 3 double bedrooms (the Master room has a King size bed with ensuite, and great views) and a single bedroom. The land we own is 10 acres, but still very much like a farm! We have lots of outside toys and games for children, including a trampoline, table tennis, giant swing, go karts, netball, etc. We also have 4 lovely hens for you to collect eggs from. We also have a hot tub that you and your family can enjoy. Please see my notes below on the huge array of activites you can do in our area, perfect for those with or without children. Worcestershire is a wonderful place to visit and home to interesting historical sites, rolling countryside, cultural cities and historic market towns. Our county was the was the inspiration for The Shire, described in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Worcester was the birthplace of the composer Sir Edward Elgar, and close by Stratford Upon Avon is the birthplace of Shakespeare. We have plenty to do locally for those who want to visit for a weekend and not wanting to travel too far. Should you be considering a longer visit, Worcestershire and neighbouring counties is the perfect place to get a taste of Rural England with its beautiful gardens, medieval towns with thatched cottages and stunning countryside. If you are on an extended trip to the UK, Worcestershire would be a great stop to combine with London for the full British experience.

Notes

We have 4 lovely hens- dependent on the length of our exchange and your preferences, we will need to talk about the arrangements for them.

Neighbourhood

Fernhill Heath; We are ideally situated in a large village with a couple of good pubs and small grocery shops within walking distance. We are also very close to some lovely countryside, perfect for running and family walks. There is a small park locally. Worcester and local; We are 5 mins car / bus journey from Worcester, with a wealth of shops, bars, restaurants etc. You can take a walk down the river, drop by at The Hive library and visit the stunning cathedral. Tudor House Museum is free and an interesting visit. We also have Worcester Racecourse, so its worth checking out what events are happening there. There's a wealth of fun local activities, including West Midlands Safari Park, Severn Valley Railway, Churchfields Ice Cream farm park, Gheluvelt park and Splashpad, Little Owl Farm Park, Top Barn Farm, Droitwich Spa Lido, All Things Wild, as well as ten pin bowling, swimming, parks, cinema etc. Lots of of family fun! Historic Sites; If days out in historic sites interest you, then we are spoilt for choice. We have National Trust sites including Hanbury Hall, Croome Court and Brockhampton House, and other sites include Warwick Castle, Spetchley Park, and Witley Court. These are great nice walks, picnics and in many cases tours and events. We personally love going to Ragley Hall, which in addition to the grand house has a fantastic wooden play area and maze for children, and Avoncroft Museum, combining old bulidings and a windmill along with a ride on miniature railway for the kids. Malvern; In half an hour you can visit Malvern, which has lovely shops and cafes, and obviously some fantastic walks in the Malvern hills. Malvern Theatre is also worth a visit and hosts some great shows. Birmingham; You can get a train / drive to Birmingham in half hour also, for shopping, bars, shows etc. There are so many places to visit with the kids, including National Sea Life Centre, Legoland Discovery Centre (you can buy package deals for these 2), Cadbury World, Thinktank Museum (highly recommended!). Black Country Museum is also an fun day out for all the family. On the outskirts of Birmingham is Resorts World for Shopping and the NEC which is a massive events venue, hosting all types of events including Crufts, Home/Cooking/Garden/Fashion/Wedding Shows, Kids Events, Transport etc. - definitely worth checking out what's on. Birmingham is also the home of the famous Edgebaston Cricket Ground, as well as Birmingham Botanical Gardens, Jewellery Quarter, Hippodrome, etc. I could keep going! Shropshire and Cotswolds Worcestershire is positioned next to some beautiful counties, which have plenty of stunning market towns to visit where you can enjoy walks, shops, cafes, culture, tours etc. Just some of these include Ludlow, which has a castle and markets, along with interesting old architecture, located within Shropshire (approx 1 hour). We are also close to the Cotswolds, which again has a wealth of medieval villages, churches and stately homes. Market towns to visit include Bourton on the Water (with paddling stream, model village, Birdland, model railway etc) and Moreton in the Marsh (with stunning Borton House Gardens). Cotswold Farm Park and Water Parks are a great visit too. For bigger towns and cities, Cheltenham is just over half hour away (where I work!), famous for its racecourse, stunning Regency architecture and boutqie shops and cafes. If you have the time, a day trip to Bath is also highly recommended- (it is an hour and a half)- it is a stunning Roman city, where you are surrounded with Georgian architecture and incredible shops and places to eat. I can personally recommend the Spa as a once in a lifetime experience! Stratford Upon Avon; About 45 mins away you can get to Stratford Upon Avon, the birth place of Shakespeare and a great day out. As well as enjoying the town itself, you can visit Shakespeares birthplace and family home, sit in his actual School rooms, and attend the Royal Shakespeare Theatre. Anne Hathaways Cottage is a beautful 500 year cottage with stunning gardens, where Shakespeare courted his bride to be. Access; Worcestershire’s location in the heart of England makes it very accessible. If you are flying into the area, then Birmingham International Airport and East Mids airports are approximately 30 minutes away. Worcestershire has excellent road links to the major motorways (M5, M6, M40, M42, M50) and London is just 2½ hours away. This is a taster of our neighbourhood- if you have specific interests which you think might not be met, please get in touch and we will let you know what's available and where!

Getting around

You can get a bus into Worcester. For most areas you will need a car.

Martin is a web developer and Shelley is Training Manager. We have 2 daughters aged 10 and 7. We are non smoking vegetarians, we don't have pets. We have completed 3 exchanges (1 x Barcelona, 2 x UK) with our previous home and have loved the whole experience (can provide reviews from the other site!). We love to experience how others live and always treat someone else's home with respect, and hope to expect the same in return. Our favourite type of extended holiday is one where we can visit multiple locations in an area.
