We have lived in our house for 40 years, bringing up our three children, several dogs and two rabbits. It's unlike many London homes in that the rooms are spacious, it has lots of style but it is comfortable and built for people to relax in. We have an open fireplace, it's gas but you'd never know it, for winter cosiness, plus central heating. The master bedroom is huge with masses of cupboard space while the loft bedroom/office upstairs with its own good sized bathroom is bigger than many London flats. There are three further bedrooms, one large double, one large single and one smaller single. The garden has housed many a barbeque on both the patio terrace and on the lawn. But should you yearn for a bit of excitement on a Saturday afternoon you can always nip out the garden gate and watch the cricket.

The house is traditional north London style, built when space was not at a premium and when solid comfort was important.

There is either two floors or three, depending on how you count them - a ground floor with two reception rooms, kitchen, utility area, toilet and sunroom, then up one flight of stairs to the master bedroom and one other double plus two singles, and then in the loft suite upstairs a huge double bedroom/living space plus second bathroom. Depending on how our guests want to use our home we use one room for our own private belongings.

It's a happy area with pleasant, friendly neighbours. The local shop is two minutes walk away, as is the bus-stop for the frequent shuttle bus to the tube station taking you to the West End or Mayfair or Knightsbridge 20 minutes away.

Our area has been voted one of the best in London for quality of life. There are ancient woods - Queens Wood and HighGate Wood both within short walking distance. Kenwood, where part of the movie, "Notting Hill" was shot is 5 minutes drive away. Alexandra Palace is within easy walking distance. Our house backs onto a cricket ground, so the view is very green and leafy. We have a well maintained public swimming pool and gym within 5 minutes walk and the local shopping area is just up the hill and easily accessible with the local bus service which runs every 4 - 6 minutes. Three super markets, cafes, restaurants, bakeries, fashion shops, hair dressers etc.

A great bus service running every 4 - 6 minutes, the Highgate tube station is 15 minute walk and the main tube station, Finsbury Park is a 12 minute bus ride away.

Member description
We are a couple of adventurous grandparents with grandchildren in two hemispheres! So we need to travel to Perth, Australia every year for about 3 - 6 months so we can keep up with our daughter's growing family in Fremantle, Western Australia while keeping our home in London. Perth is a lovely city and we can always consider an exchange there, but our preferred destinations are Fremantle or East Fremantle, Mosman Park, Cottesloe, Claremont, Mount Claremont, Dalkeith, Crawley or Nedlands.
