General overview
Our large house is set in charming mature gardens on the edge of a rural hamlet and surrounded by unspoilt woodland. It's a tranquil haven only ten minutes from the spectacular Gorges de l'Aveyron. Also only twenty minutes from the A20 motorway and just over an hour from Toulouse Blagnac Airport.
On our doorstep we enjoy a beautiful landscape, mediaeval villages, picturesque walking trails, local markets, bars and restaurants and a whole host of outdoor pursuits.
The space
Our house is set in charming mature gardens on the edge of a rural hamlet and surrounded by unspoilt woodland. It's a tranquil haven only ten minutes from the spectacular Gorges de l'Aveyron.
The spacious living/dining room has a fully fitted kitchen area at one end, and an attractive wood-burning fireplace at the other. Downstairs are two double bedrooms, one with a king-size bed, and a bathroom.
Upstairs are a large double bedroom and a twin-bedded room with another twin-bedded room leading off it. There is a bathroom upstairs too. The lounge area opens on to a glorious shaded terrace with table and chairs. Our good-sized swimming pool has a large patio with sunbeds, table, chairs and sunshades. We also enjoy playing table-tennis and boules in our large garden.
Within a hundred metres from the house, you can see the Roque Corbieres and our beautiful local gorge. A narrow path winds its way over rocky terrain and through delicate undergrowth down to the stream where there is a recently-restored 'lavoir', where the locals used to do their washing.
From meals on the terrace, watching the stars to wildlife spotting and games in the garden, the house is a hideaway for the whole family and has plenty to keep everyone happy and occupied.
We love our holiday house in its idyllic setting. We've found it perfect for sharing with family and friends.
Guest access
The accommodation is over two floors. However for a small party, up to four, there is everything available on the ground floor. When my partner and I are there, we hardly go upstairs!

Neighbourhood
The local villages of Caylus and St Antonin Noble Val, both about ten minutes' drive away, have regular markets and beautiful mediaeval buildings. There is a range of bars and restaurants in both these villages, as well as supermarkets and small shops. Both villages are popular with the art community, and there are regular exhibitions.
A little further afield are Caussade, renowned for hat-making and a good Monday market, Montauban, the capital of the Tarn-et-Garonne department, with many shops and supermarkets as well as the Ingres Museum and some beautiful views over the Tarn. Villefranche de Rouergue is another lovely town on the Aveyron, with an extensive Thursday market.
Caylus has a lovely square with a cafe and an old market building. There's a small market here on a Tuesday, and we often meet up with friends outside the cafe on a Tuesday morning. There is also a lovely lake with a small public swimming pool and a playground.
St Antonin boasts the oldest civic building in France, and the church in Caylus contains a renowned wooden sculpture by Zadkine, a contemporary of Picasso.
Further afield are Cahors, Gaillac, Albi, Montauban and Toulouse, with their vineyards, markets, art galleries and historical sites. St Cirq Lapopie is an impressive village overhanging the river Lot, and the ancient chateaux at Penne and Bruniquel are wonders to behold, and designated among the most beautiful villages in France.
The beautiful and varied landscape is a paradise for walkers and cyclists. We have set off on many walks straight from the house. Flora and fauna are abundant - a deer on the common is a regular sight, and I identified over thirty varieties of wild plants on a walk one May. Birdlife is spectacular. The unusual hoopoe is certainly a sight to behold.
The Aveyron Gorge hosts a wide range of activities, such as kayaking, rock-climbing, mountain-biking and so on. Kayaking down the river is one of our favourite activities on a summer's day.
For wine lovers, the vineyards of the famous Cahors 'black' wine are not far away, and nor, in the other direction, are the vineyards of the lighter Gaillac wines. Plenty of opportunities for wine-tasting! We enjoy the local Coteaux de Quercy wines which are pretty good too.
On a trip to the Gaillac vineyards, we also recommend visiting the Chateau de Mauriac, which is owned by an artist, Monsieur Bistes, who has almost completed his restoration project of the building. A guided tour takes you round a variety of historic rooms, on which he has put his own mark, including many of his own paintings. A must!
Getting to my home
Travelling to the house is easy. Airports are an hour away, with car rental available. The house is only twenty minutes from the A20 motorway. There is plenty of parking space.
Nearest airport
Toulouse Blagnac Airport is just over an hour's drive away, and Brive and Rodez Airports are about the same distance.
Getting around
The house is in a hamlet away from the main road, and about ten minutes' drive from the nearest villages. It is preferable to have a car, though I don't have one to exchange, I'm afraid.
